    I’m one of those new G9 users you refer to in the opening. I researched a ton of cameras... spent months looking... and settled on the G9. Why? It ticks every box for me and offers up an incredibly rich feature set for an exceptional price. For under $1600 USD I got the camera with the 12-60 f/2.8-4 lens. That’s less than the price of pretty much every full frame body alone (Canon EOS RP being the exception). Since I got it I’ve been binge watching your videos 😄

      Hi Jonny, I agree about the G9. I switched from Canon FF system to Lumix M4/3, 7 years ago and have never regretted it. Cost. Size. Quality. Ease of use. Fun factor! The G9 is my 5th camera body, it's got all I need. I think that's why this camera is still selling well. I have to say even after 2 years of using it, I'm still learning new and fun things to do with it. And I have a ton of subscribers who love it too. Hope you enjoy shooting with it as much as I do. Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you again.

    I wonder why you did not mention the option "iHandheld Night Shot" under both iA and iA+ setting. Especially in problematic low light situations the iHDR setting can be very useful. - The photos taken with 3,200 ISO at f3.5-4.5 are clear, contrasty and sharp, the white balance is sensationally well taken. Caution: In particularly dark surroundings, the intelligent automatic system takes multi shots without signalling this beforehand. Thank you, Marlene, for this again very helpful tutorial.

    I bought a used G9 a couple of months ago. Im a keen amateur and figured if the G9 was good enough for a pro 3-4 years ago its more than good enough for me now 🙂. Hi Marlene, doing fine, thanks for asking. I have three Lumix cameras: a G9, a G85 and a GX85. I tried the iA+ mode on my GX85 and ever since I have not changed it back. I am amazed at how well the photos turn out, very few duds. Since my GX85 is my “street” photography camera, in this mode I can take shots quickly without fiddling with settings. Thanks for the tip on the iA function button. Never saw that. Great video and hope you are doing well during these difficult times.

    • @ImageMaven

      Hello Steven. Sounds like you have your GX85 dialed in and ready to go. Thanks for checking in. All is fine here, and I and hope you are doing okay too. Enjoyed a nice bike ride today. First of the year as we've had a very cold and snowy spring so far. I hope to be planting my veggie garden soon but right now the beds are still frozen. Okay I got way off the iA+ topic there, but such are the times. Always great to hear from you. Be well.

    Here we are three years later and I’ve just ordered an used G9 to upgrade from my old G6 and G7 cameras. Will see out all your G9 videos to learn about it. It won’t be a steep learning curve but there’s always something new to learn. I did comment three years ago and am only now getting around to upgrading and taking the small risk of buying used. It does come with a six month warranty and the one I have chosen is graded ‘excellent’. It will be interesting to see what turns up and what the shutter count will be. MPB do not check shutter count, or certainly do not quote any.

    I’ve watched many of your videos & have learnt a lot from you. I’ve had my G9 for about 18mths now & love it. Glad you posted this one. I didn’t fully understand the difference between intelligent auto and intelligent auto plus, so thank you for explaining it. I do use intelligent auto when something occurs quickly and I haven’t got time to adjust the settings (such as a bird or animal). Thanks again & stay healthy, from Australia

    Hi Marlene, I have used the iA function on my hardworking G9, to produce some excellent results across a range of lens. I often use it whilst out walking, particularly in difficult conditions or when the elements turn and it's not practicable to safely change settings on the move. Been a follower for a while now and your tutorials provide a great structured approach to navigating the fantastic G9. You & everyone else, stay safe! Gloucestershire, England.

I hope we get to the other side of this pandemic soon so we can get out to new places to take photos. Cheers.

    Thanks for this detailed and clear introduction. I find most of the content of this video also applies to Lumix GM1s. I seldom use the iAuto mode so I haven’t realized menu settings are different on this mode until I watched this video. I discovered two features of Lumix GM1s I overlooked before: iHandheld Night Shot & iHDR, which take multiple shots and combine them to one automatically under low light or high dynamic range conditions. On GM1s, these two features are only available in iAuto or iAuto+ (if the saving format is JPEG).

    Great video! I just got this camera brand new in 2024 and find it to be an amazing photography camera. I use IA+ for a majority of my walkabouts when wildlife or nature shots come to my attention. I migrate to fully manual when I’m looking for a special effects such as milky water, or the Bokeh effect. As a sidenote, I haven’t found any quality aftermarket books to do this camera justice. Nicely done! So many reviews focus on "professional" features without recognizing the power of Lumix camera Intelligent Auto. And, the Lumix cameras Intelligent interface is so much easier to navigate compared to other systems (one reason I said goodbye to my Olympus, Sony, Nikon cameras)😊

    Nice video and thanks for doing that. I have the GH5 and lock focus on a small area where birds land for video 4K 60p capture. I just hit record, walk away and come back every 15 mins or so to stop and start another recording session so I don't get too big files. Anyway, I wonder if I set it to iA and tracking if it would be smart enough to grab focus once a bird lands, eats, drinks, and follow it, in focus, until it leaves and another bird lands. I'll have to give that a try.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I use iAuto+ perhaps 10 to 15% of the time with no guilty conscience whatsoever. On my G85(G80) in iA+ mode the Fn4 brings me direct to P mode like "shutter speed/f stop" setting .
    The Fn2 direct to exposure compensation.
    On the GF7 in iA+ mode pressing the Exposure Compensation (top on the dial) to exposure compensation and pressing again to adjusting the f stop adjustment (works exactly like the G85).
    After setting the f stop on G85 and GF7 tracking AF is not possible anymore.
    You get 1 af box/area. On the G85 you can NOT change the size of this box.
    The iA+ mode tries to set the shutter speed to at least twice the focal length if possible or with a lot of light even faster. Tested with the 12-32 and the 100-300. Nice.

I have been shooting in most modes, but i generally take 1st shot in IA or IA+ then review the shot and judge how i want to adjust. In IA+ mode there is something i do not understand. Sometimes there is a significant delay between pressing the shutter release and the picture being recorded. This even happens when there are no compensations set in IA+. It does nor seem to do this in IA mode. The delay normally means that the picture framing is compromised. Any idea why? And how to prevent?...Thanks

      In Program mode you can select more options like ISO, WB, and the full range of Photo Styles, among other things. Also In Program mode you can roll the dial and it will move to a different combo of f-stop and shutter speeds. For example if you want shallow depth of field you roll the dial to a larger f-stop and the camera will adjust shutter speed in step. Basically you get the full range of camera options in P, and in iA mode you have a limited set. Although iA mode is great when you just want a "cell phone experience" and concentrate on composition, lighting and timing. Great for parties!

    Marlene, if you have not done a video on how to use wireless as option to depressing shutter button or cable release, please consider doing so. I would love to be able to use my Panasonic (Lumix) app for remote shutter release, but find myself befuddled on how to use.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea. It is on my list. I use the remote shutter sometimes when capturing birds. I park my camera on a tripod and view the bird action from inside the house. But I mostly use the wireless options to transfer photos to my phone from the camera. Is the issue connecting to it, or using it? You can control a lot of the camera functions through your phone, so definitely worth setting it up.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, so for iHDR (in iA mode) -- if the camera detects a scene where it can’t capture the full tonal range, HDR will activate automatically. You will see HDR shown up on your LCD so you will know when it’s enabled. It will take 3 photos and blend them into one final shot automatically. I’m still working on testing the Hand held night shot. It was raining last night so I wasn’t able to get outside to test it. Plus it’s light until 9:30 pm so it’s past my bedtime. 😂I’ll try on the weekend.

When I turn power on it takes forever (5-10 seconds) before I can start to record a video. Can you confirm if this dealbreaker has been improved in G9? Hi Marlene
    Just a quick question.
    I own the G9 (an upgrade to my GH3). I edit in lightroom, however. The lightroom edition I use (6.9, I refuse to have a monthly subscription) does not allow me to edit the RW2 files from the G9 but it allowed me to edit them when I was using the GH3 (Same file format).
    Currently I convert the RW2 files from the G9 to DNG's via Adobe digital converter. I'd rather use the RW2 files direct from the G9. Am I missing something, as In, do you know why the G9 won't allow me to edit in RAW? Many thanks.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Darren, No, you are not missing anything. Sadly, you will need to upgrade to LR CC in order to open your G9 raw files directly. Or keep using the DNG converter, and that's a pain. It's what I call the domino effect of buying a new camera. Try shooting raw + jpg with your G9 and you may be surprised at how good those jpgs are -- especially if you use the camera's internal processing abilities. I shoot jpg 99% of the time now. If you do get a file that you really want to edit in RAW then convert only those files. Trust the camera! You'll save so much time.

    A few Questions please. I use the IA mode almost all the time. When shooting a picture with the subject close up you expect the bkgd to be blurred out. It is, but some of, even the close up objects are blurred too. I can have two items in the frame, one of the left and one on the right. I can take two pics. One pic has the one on the left in focus and not the one on the right, then in the second pic, it's reversed....the opposite is in and out of focus. Or I can have two items with one being maybe inches behind the other ( doesn't qualify as bkgd to me ) and only the one that's closest is is focus. How can I get all subjects that are reasonable close to each other in focus in the IA mode? My second question has to do with filming in the IA mode. When doing an animal that's moving I don't have time to go to M, P, or A mode when I'm already in the IA mode taking stills. Problem is... I have to halfway depress the still pic shutter button to see it's in focus before depressing the button for filming...( this is critical time when the animal could be gone in seconds ) ...and sometimes the video is in focus and sometimes it's not. I have had that happen with an animal that even stayed still or with it moving. How can I get the focus set ( quickly ) for filming in the IA mode and can I use focus tracking in that mode? Thank you. I enjoy your instruction videos. ---Terry

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terry, as you know, the iA mode is very limited in functionality, especially where Focus is concerned. Start at Page 65 of the PDF Owner's manual for more detailed info about what exactly can be set in iA mode. If the limits of iA are too frustrating, which it sounds is the case, may I suggest you switch to Program Mode (P) and there you will get all of the focus options you need. You can also set your M-Video mode to P and hopefully that helps too. I think that will be a good starting point. Don't give up!
