    Ultimately its true that grocery story coffee bags will typically pull like this since its been sitting so long. Whereas when you buy coffee from speciality coffee roasters you will be buying coffee that has been roasted relatively recently. But the crappy shots isn't about the coffee needing to be 'specialty' or your coffee being low quality. The issue is that the coffee has sat unused for too long and released much of the trapped CO2 that is created during the roasting process. When you pull a shot with recently roasted coffee, the coffee puck expands as it is filled with hot water. This expansion contributes to the pressure build up allowing you to reach 9 bar of pressure. When you leave roasted coffee alone, it slowly releases its trapped CO2. This is why when you buy bags of coffee from specialty roasters there's always a one way release in the bag to allow the build up of gas to escape. Otherwise coffee bags would be exploding and making a mess in everyone's pantry. It's normal to buy a bag of coffee and as it gets older you will need to adjust grind size and dosage to promote higher pressure and pull a well extracted shot. So the next time you're having this issue, it might be time to up your dose and ratio, or grind finer.

      So say if you put your coffee in a glass jar with a sealed lid, would the glass explode eventually?

    • @ShelloSheep
      @ShelloSheep ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@fusion1gfxI do this and I think as time goes on the pressure builds enough that it slows further co2 release so it wouldn't explode as long as it's a strong jar. But when you take the lid off sometimes it pops off a little aggressively 😬

      In the US everything is spread apart so people have to use a car and travel a long distance for anything, so to avoid that they try to create these outside world “services” inside their homes. That leads to very high costs (on building a pool, or basketball court or even a grilling station etc inside their homes) and isolation (having very few neighbors for them to socialize and their kids to grow healthy).

Im not even sure the police have a station and don't just drive over from the next town 10 miles out. And that town has a grand total of I beileve 6 restaurants and the only one thats a chain is a dominos. From there the nearest city is another 20 miles.
      From me the nearest walmart is 15 miles, the nearest McDonald's is 20 miles, the nearest taco bell is 30 miles. You get the point. And yes I live in the USA. If you're looking to get into espresso, And you're constantly buying drinks at chain coffee shops You can work your way up to a equality espresso machine if you take into consideration how much you spend at a coffee bar buying espresso drinks. Cut that out for a few months and you can probably purchase a good quality used or hand operated espresso maker. While you're saving up you can invest around $40US buying an Aeropress and a frother and make espresso-like beverages to tide you over. There are several videos on TH-cam showing you how.

Go to a couple different shops, and get a black coffee from each one, and try to get different origins if possible. Honestly, if you show interest, a shop might make half a pour over of two different coffees so you can try both for the price of one. And when you drink them, try to reach for the flavors you can find in them. Each coffee can taste so different from another. I am deep deep in the rabbit hole of the science behind coffee, but you definitely DON’T have to do that to get enjoyment out of it. It’s the same kind of things as alcoholic drinks, or different ways to prepare meat, or many other food related subcultures. A lot of times, I don’t drink coffee for the caffeine, I drink it because I enjoy the art that goes into it from farm to cup.

      also you can’t compare beans to an expensive guitar. at some point the quality of the guitar is passable enough for your skill to take over. Espresso should actually sit for about 10-14 days to allow for degassing. With the increase in pressure with espresso you will get more gas, more creama (not always a good thing), and less actual espresso at the end. At my current location it CONSTANTLY changes on how to pull the shot because we put it directly into the hopper. My last place had A MUCH better consistency even with just waiting 7 days. Fresh roasted is always better for sure, but for espresso let it sit for a bit.
