When you extendend the crossbeam was it enough to just tighten the screws? Am I supposed to drill new holes in the rails for the screws to fit properly?

From memory, I didn't do any drilling. I only used the drill for the screwdriver element.
The desk feels 100% secure.

really keen on grabbing this. at full height does it wobble at all? and how important do you think having carpet is with respect to this?

No wobble at all, it is very sturdy. My office has a carpet, but it's the most thin / old carpet in the world (I rent the office). I don't get any issues with wobble or vibration noise from typing etc.
