Thank you, Jon, for posting this lesson. The Clovers were such an influential vocal group - one of the acts that helped launch Atlantic Records into the first R&B label with national reach with hits like Fool, Fool, Fool; Lovey-Dovey, One Mint Julep, Blue Velvet, and Devil or Angel. But it's also worth noting how remarkable and innovative a guitarist was Bill Harris, the Clovers' guitarist on Love Potion #9 and their other classic recordings. His influential R&B playing was informed by a Spanish classical guitar training in Washington, DC that followed his teenage years as organist for his family church in North Carolina. In addition to playing guitar for the Clovers, he was their vocal and musical arranger and wrote or co-wrote several songs for them. While still playing with the Clovers, Mickey Baker brought Bill to Mercury Records to produce the first jazz solo guitar album -"Bill Harris" recorded in 1956 (all performed on nylon-stringed Spanish-style guitar). Later, Bill became a well known teacher in DC (my dad was one of his students), local concert promoter, and owner of the Pigfoot nightclub (where he frequently hosted and jammed with your teacher, Kenny Burrell). Here's a good overview of his career, compiled shortly before his death at age 63 from pancreatic cancer. th-cam.com/video/NMMc6C444ko/w-d-xo.html . And here's his 1988 obituary: www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1988/12/07/jazz-guitarist-and-singer-bill-harris-dies-at-age-63/eb3eba3c-74f5-4e5c-b0c7-af74ecc1a990/
