- Full analysis of every detail in the Vetements Fall Winter 2019 show as part of Paris Fashion Week. Throughout December of 2020, I submitted 3 looks from this show each day to my IG story and everyone submitted their own analysis. I compiled over 1,000 submissions into this final video. What does post soviet Russia has to do with all of this? Demnas Georgian and his work reflects on soviet and post soviet Georgia. Therese a huge difference between post soviet Russia and post soviet Georgia they became different countries and always had completely different cultures although both have been previously influenced by soviet union.

Being from Georgia myself, all the references to the soviet union and Georgia specifically are really interesting to me. I read one of the comments saying the clothing reminds them of what people actually dress like here, and I agree. It's ironic how expensive the Vetement's clothes are and how now, it has become clothing that the people from other "social classes" wear. I love your channel and these videos, and it was especially interesting watching different people's take on Demna's work.

I just want to add my 2 cents on Demna's irony and its impact on local Georgian fashion, based on my own experience of Georgia. As mentioned in your video, the looks presented are familiar to anyone living in post-soviet countries as it is EXACTLY how Georgian youth used to look un-ironically and looks like now, ironically. What I've found absolutely brilliant about Vetements' international aura is that it made Georgian local sens of fashion (creating looks from whatever you find in 2nd hand shops, from humanitarian aid and fake brands imported from nearby Turkey's huge textile industry) into a worldwide trend as well as a fashion prank on the wealthy. From the civil war in the 90s, Georgia's new state developed in a context of chaos and highly unregulated market, where a few got insanely rich and powerful while the rest of the population still lives in deep poverty. There is no middle class in Georgia: you have on one side the young student taking the old soviet bus dressed in all-synthetic fake brands and some random t-shirts from the thrift shop, starring the logo of a local Germany volleyball club no one has ever heard about... and people dressed in full real Prada driving their BMW G-Wagon on the shitty roads of Tbilisi. Since Vetements got international, these insanely rich people of Georgia are now dressed exactly like the young kid working at the local liquor store because they now shop at Vetements and Balanciaga. To me, this is the ultimate power and irony of Vetements : empowering the disadvantaged Georgian youth by making them the aesthetics of the local oligarchs.

Sending my love to Georgia from Romania. I completely understand and relate to what you are saying. At the same time, I am happy that Demna succeeded in refining the best that could be extracted from the moda-povera of Eastern Europe and creating a new type of elegance - it's not just irony.

So how is the empowerment working out for the Georgian youth? Are they still poor? Poor, but happy people find them trendy? I don't mean to be rude but I came here to learn more about Demna and why he styled that ad campaign they way he did.

The project was soooo fun and this episode is sooo exciting it made me understand and appreciate Demna’s work more and more even though it was hard for me to understand the collection at first but now I know that it’s coming mostly from his background and his love for music and art. So grateful and hope to participate in more analyzing in the future

I think the anarchy motif is in no way a criticism of anarcho-socialism especially if you look at Denma's work as a whole. By far the most common thread throughout all of his work is satirizing consumer capitalist culture so it's hard for me to believe that he would turn around and say "well socialism is also bad as you can see from the anarchy symbol being upside down". I think it's much more likely a criticism of the cooptation of more radical leftist ideas to fit into capitalist culture (take for instance the new Disney-owned Cruella movie whose identity revolves around anarchistic ideals).
This made me fall in love with fashion again for a really long time. I love demna and missed this show but damn I love fashion. The art is beautiful and so meaningful that actually has depth to talk about with each garment. Do more balenciaga pls because demna isn’t really creative director of vetements anymore...!!!

What people in the west usually don't understand is how similar fashion shopping, luxury industry and the whole subculture surrounding it is similar to everyday shopping experience in the eastern bloc. Food and other items were distributed as 'drops', and you had to know people to get a good position in the queue to buy this stuff first. You buy ANYTHING regardless, because later you may exchange it for something else. Everyday consumer goods were similar to Hermes bags and the way they were distributed was very similar.

I think the upside anarchy sign is a talk on how commodification has abstracted and takes Revolutionary aesthetics in order to delude them and remove the message instead of just a general diss on anarcho communism

This show is fascinating, off-putting, evocative of the socio-historical, bold, funny and deeply frightening. The sort of clothes you could see at a seedy club or, in fact at a riot in Washington DC (referring more to the flag play at Vetements ss19). This is ironic luxury, stripped of aspirational cliches. A viewer is well within his, her or their right to hate these clothes, and that only serves to heighten the potency of the performance. One of my favorite shows, and some of my favorite clothes, of the past few years

Super late, so someone might've pointed this out but I'm pretty sure the B on the Hocus Pocus hoodie is also the logo of the Mexican snack company, Barcel.

I think the green hair, white hoodie with the silk road logo look is a direct reference of Rou Rot, a member of CRIM3S, one of the bands to pioneer the witch house sound and aesthetic in the early 2010s. He rocked camo a lot and if you google image his name and scroll down a bit you'll find a flick of him with the same greasy green hair in a camo jacket and hoodie.
Also SALEM one of the biggest bands in the genre recently made a resurgence after years of silence and released merch incorporating the silk road logo with their own on a white t shirt just like this hoodie. That was less than a year ago though so maybe they got it from here?

11:14 Not only Kurt Cobain but also such or similar dresses are quite famous among 90s women in their 40+ in postsoviet countries (Ukraine for example) even now you can see grandmas wearing them and they are sold at the markets (usually open, or street)

As a Georgian person here, I actually think that the EU logo with one star missing might represent the idea that Georgia has been trying sooooooo hard to officially join the EU and still hasn’t been able to. It’s a common joke here that we wanna belong to europe so badly and yet europe couldn’t care less about us honestly lmao. Also, I do feel that the essence of Vetements is !truly! satire.

I could have sworn that Marina’s red gown she wore in her public installations was a Tisci-Givenchy piece and not Balenciaga. While I was in art grad school, I was lucky to check her out at MOMA and loved it! The entire production was such an affiar. It was great to walk between the doorway where two nude models were standing, making people either arroused or uncomfortable as they were walking into the space. lol

After watching this video and the one about Balenciaga there’s one thing that strike me. The trend they are trying to portray is very in line with what is going on right now in 2020/21 with this stupid pandemic. A lot of security presence, online or offline. Conformism, socialization of the media. I like the presidential sweater with the corporate mocking jeans as if he’s like a NASCAR or F1 driver with all the sponsorship endorsement. Ironic indeed. I don’t want to sound crazy but these ppl from all those houses are very well informed/connected.

I might have a note on the hair for look 41.
In the dark and Middle Ages up to atleast the end of ww2 it was common practice to denude a woman to publicly shame her for being adulterous. Denuding was a process of shaving the woman’s head and normally stipping her naked; generally just to humiliate, but it’s impossible to say if some of this did not escalate.
This was done to humiliate, not for cleanness, or to give them a “look”. Denuding was wide spread during the later part of ww2, as towns were being liberated, women who had worked with the nazis or were suspected to have done so were denuded.
Idk if this is a really solid reference point, but if you’re the brave of heart type, you can look into it your self.
In Episode 4 of Band of Brothers there is a depiction of this act, as the Americans have liberated this Dutch village from the nazis.

disagree with the point on the upside down anarchy top in this only because it feels pretty important that the upside down anarchy symbol here is forming a "V." he's definitely mocking anarchism to some extent, but by inverting the symbol, he also brings it closer to his own brand. plays well with the rest of the half-parody half-appropriation he's doing elsewhere in the show.
