I heard the song was written from the perspective of the unadopted orphans, as they watch one lucky orphan girl, named Amy, get adopted...the unadopted kids watch and see it as though "Amy hit the atmosphere; Caught herself a rocket ride out of this gutter; And she's never comin back I fear" Sad and jealous but happy for Amy, these kids are torn, waiting for so long, waiting for mothers to come, to adopt them. The interpretation could be way off but it convinced me when I read it :)
I can totally relate Theo M., I was in foster car until I was 16, I eventually got emancipation from the state. My mother would come back to visit year after year, with all these promises that never came true... I put everything into her promises...
i know there's nothing to do with winehouse, but the song is about a girl adam knew who was drug addicted, so when the winehouse died, the feeling of this song was really near to the event. Peace.
Amy Smart, the actress, is close friends with Adam. She inspired this song, when she started to get more famous, ect. It's a gorgeous song! He's a genius songwriter! ♥
Actually Adam said the song was inspired by a young girl who got caught up in the scene in San Francisco everyone just started using heroin. And one day that girl went back to the Midwest. And the group of heroin users would always ask Adam what happened to her. Adam didn't know what happened to her. But he told the group that she was doing fine. I had found a better life
WOW! I began searching for a song that would fit the ending of Amy's appearances in DW and this was the first song that came up with her name. Glad to see there are others who miss her. :)
This song is also appropriate for Amy Johnson, the famous record-breaking solo pilot in the 1930s, who was later shot down over England in mysterious circumstances. "This little lady who has captured every heart" was deeply mourned world wide. See wikipedia: Amy Johnson
The rocket ride was a mom who came and adopted her. No point trying to read drug meanings into plain, good lyrics about the sufferings of innocent children orphaned by our human weaknesses and shortcomings. Just plain wonderful songwriting and execution by Adam Duritz.
Thanks for all the comments. Please check out some of my other videos. I have a lot of counting crows less known tracks but still incredible...like this one.
Theo- I really don't know how to interpret this song bc i feel you can get the feeling from the lyrics and the beauty in the way Adam sings the song. What about you. Thanks for asking.
their is no definition for "good taste in music" its all opinion based, but still this is a good song, I heard it on Roswell but I came here because I like the song
it wasn't until her death that my video received attention. it goes to show all the truly amazing music out there that sometimes we don't appreciate until a life altering event. thanks so much for your comment
food for the soul. nothing like the crows!!!! 1 for sorrow two for joy, three for girls and four for boys.
I think Adam is such a brilliant singer, songwriter!!
His songs are so relatable and melancholy!!
Roswell brought me here too. Great downbeat song from the crows :)
I always find my way back to the Crows at difficult times in my life ❤. So so beautiful.
Damn I love this tune. Simplicity with elegant guitar fills and superb lyrics. Thanks for the upload.
Someone redirected me here and the song is nice 🙂 Thanks J!

I picked myself out of a "guttered" 11 year toxic relationship with this song...
I made these videos to help get myself through some tough times. How could we live without music?
Roswell, Max and Isabel episode 11 season 1

It sounds like he's saying "waiting for mother earth to come" to me, which would make a lot more sense...to me.
indeed...might you be willing to share your interpretation? I'm all eyes :)
I always thought it was about Amy losing herself to drug abuse
Hitting the atmosphere getting high
was searching on google if amy winehouse ever suffered from domestic abuse randomly and found this masterpiece
omg God works in so many ways
My desert life...
She bought herself a rocket ride out of this gutter.
Mary ann,your better than...❤
