I was raised in the Pentecostal religion and was taught many things about having faith in God. Snakes was not one of them. I was told many times that I should always have faith in God and trust in him for all things. I personally believe trusting in God is a good thing and I also believe God expects us to use good judgement and common sense. Most Christians interpret these verses metaphorically rather than literally, emphasizing the spiritual power and protection that comes from faith rather than physical acts like snake handling. I remember him he came to my small town in East Tennessee to help a fellow preacher who was Pentacostal and yes he had as many snakes as Mack!! I was at the church only once for a wedding no snakes that day because I would not have been there!! Also there was another pastor I believe in Virginia who died from a snake bite he was friends with Mack and the local preacher here in my hometown!! I live close to the Virginia and Kentucky border as well so tragic I'm a Christian but I don't think God asked us to do that I don't but if God told me himself I would but he hasn't so

The problem I have with handling serpents is that Everytime I've seen it and watched videos of people handling them in church, I've never seen anyone lay hands on somebody and God heal them from cancer or bring em up out of wheelchairs and I've never saw devils being cast out or any of the other signs except handling serpents . Now I'm not saying it's not happened, I'm saying I've never seen it where I live or anywhere else that they handle serpents. However I have saw Miracles happen in several different churches including deaf ears opened and blind eyes opened and I promise you it wasn't a bunch of Abra Kadabra stuff. A lot of it was little small innocent children that was absolutely blown away because they'd been healed. I'm just saying I'd much rather pray for someone to be healed or someone delivered from demonic possession than I ever would handling serpents .

My father’s family is from Lee County in Ky and I had heard stories about this same thing. About snakes in their church and their beliefs about casting out demons and healing the sick and I can’t deny what is in the Word Of God about these things but I am too scared to even pick up a non venomous snake not alone one of those timber rattlers! My grandmother called the yukka plant the cemetery plant. I live in Central KY. They are found in old cemeterys here too. I have also heard them called Ghosts in the Graveyard.
I worked for Fanning funeral home back in 83 when the one had died from a snake bite. I remember while there, to make sure I watched out for what boxes I picked up. Mainly because the snake boxes almost looked exactly like boxes that we carried light stands in for the coffins. I was nervous as a wreck the whole time I was there. And yes, they handled snakes during the funeral. This took place in Jolo West Virginia.
I'm a funeral director / embalmer in Northeastern KY. In all the years I worked in the business, I never had one of those services. But there aren't any of those churches in Northeastern Kentucky that I'm aware . They are all in Southeastern Kentucky.

We've learned a helluva lot in 2k years. We're expected to apply it and revise it as we keep learning. That pastor wanted to entertain for ego purpose or childlike attn seeking. The church isn't a concert or entertainment venue. God values wisdom & knowledge; respect other creatures' differences like culture, race and genuine sexuality. My late church Pastor was quasi-Pentecostal. So, when he said that snake-handling is a foolish misinterpretation, that's an understatement. Discernment, not literacy, is most important. Respectfully done Leo, I too just don't understand the whole snake handling concept but, I've always respected others beliefs ! I'm from Johnson county Kentucky and just about everything you and Mrs. Heather do reminds me of "back home"! I am a believer in the Bible, however it is now known that the second half of the book of Mark was not in any original manuscripts of scripture and possibly was added later by a believing writer to complete the chapter. Those words about snakes is not found in any other part of the 4 gospels or any other place in the Bible. I think some of these snake handlers don’t understand that this is not something we are supposed to do, but a metaphor to tell us that He will with us in difficult situations. Lord, Leo, you know I have been too many snake-handling churches growing up in Logan County. We visited churches over in Mingo County, Wayne County and even over at McDowell County at War. ! I’ve seen a few bitten and sent to the hospital. Son and father both died at Logan General Hosptial. They were from the church over at Micco above Switzer in Logan County. Beautiful scenery. I hate snakes. I had to close my eyes & only listen. There have always been zealots. I would do a lot of things for my faith but snakes are a big hard NO when my grandsons want to do something crazy their mother tells the little boys "that is a terrible idea" Snake handling in church is a terrible idea. My Mamaw had pictures of snake handling preachers but as far as I know she didn’t go to that kinda church I went with her as kid and I’m 61 and they didn’t do that at her church thank God. I always wanted to visit this area of West Virginia. What happened to his church? Though I embrace the Pentecostal movement....I don't do snakes. I admire his tenacity...he committed much time to the ministry.....he wasn't in it for money.
I live in Ky grew up in Eastern ky. I remember when I was young my parents would take us to different churches. Being Pentecostal we visited many different churches in Ky, WVa, Va, Tenn, OH, Carolinas, etc. anyway, I have been to a few snake handling churches. These people would talk in tongues, run around the church like a race track hollering and screaming, dancing, etc. it was enough to scare the hell out of you, especially if you was a child. Those snakes scared me half to death, they was throwing those things around like they was nothing.
As you said do not tempt the Lord thy God. I would never recommend taking up serpents, but, there have been alot more people that have handled them without being bit than those who have. It would take someone alot smarter than me to explain it but I feel like it's as dangerous to pass judgment on someone else's standings with God as it is to handle that mean ole rattler!
In 1963 my husband brought me to west va to meet his sister .big mistake.we were in jolo west va.i went to see there church I got to the front door and the music was so loud I looked at the front of the church those people were dancing and I saw snakes in there hand .I left immediately went up the road and got a blue ribbon beer .scared me to death . I never want back..oh I don't even drink...not for me
It is also legal in Tennesee where a friend of mine married a girl who was raised in " the primitive Baptist church" in Franklin, this bunch doesn't hold with photography ( it's creating " graven images" to them) and they also don't hold with Wedding receptions, having just a " sweet table" after such events but my buddies uncle bought a go pro and fastened it to his leg in order to produce a wedding video for my buddies friends at home, I haven't heard from him in awhile so I don't know if he's still married but at least count he had two daughters with one on the way.
If you swim in shark infested water, expect to get shark bitten. If you're playing with poisonous snakes, expect to get bit. But don't expect me to handle that situation peacefully! The reaction you get won't be what you expected!!
I`ve been bitten by copperheads but thankfully nothing worse and the bites weren`t severe. One was on my hand while clearing brush, one was on my right ankle in the woods while metal detecting, and one was on my right big toe by a baby one in my friend`s yard at night. The ones on my hand and my ankle were the worst but I didn`t go to a doctor. The bite on my hand where one fang got me melted a small hole in the skin and a lot of the venom came out within a minute. I was mildly sick for several days and my shoulder muscles quit working for 6 weeks. I couldn`t drive for a few days because I couldn`t see well and felt dizzy and strange with light sensitivity. My hand was bruised and swelled along with my forearm the next morning. The ankle bite caused a lot of swelling in my foot and I had to stay in bed for 5 days. The toe bite swelled and blistered very fast and when it popped I felt better and was ok. It hurt the worst so I`m not sure what kind it was. I had trouble breathing for a few minutes. Rattlesnakes & cottonmouths have never tried to bite me. I stepped on a rattlesnake`s tail once and he politely tapped my foot to let me know. I moved him to a safer place and thanked him.
The fulfillment of what that verse was talking about was in Acts when Paul was bitten by a serpent and did not die. It was not meant for all of us to handle snakes.
I have never been able to understand how people can take parts of God's word and make it the whole focus. They totally ignore the scripture that says it is written that THOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THY GOD. Which to me, if you go out purposefully and do dangerous things, thinking you won't die, is tempting God.
These churches that practice this type of thing are taking one verse out of the bible and turning it into worshipping snakes! They're making that snake into an idol. And it costs them their lives.

I really like your humanity. As an atheist myself I don’t understand why he would allow himself to be killed by a snake when he could have been saved by a very simple anti venom. But I also support his right to do that. As long as he wasn’t endangering others without their consent. Care about your fellow human beings is the key, no matter what their beliefs. I got the holy ghost snake handling proves nothing about a person having faith, just proves God has mercy on ignorance.. the whole reason God gave us the Holy Ghost wasn’t to handle snakes but to bare fruit and be a light that’s just as bad as the ones that say you have to keep the sabbath and are bound by law. Real saints serve the lord everyday and Jesus is our sabbath, he is our rest

I was raised in the Pentecostal religion and was taught many things about having faith in God. Snakes was not one of them. I was told many times that I should always have faith in God and trust in him for all things. I personally believe trusting in God is a good thing and I also believe God expects us to use good judgement and common sense. Most Christians interpret these verses metaphorically rather than literally, emphasizing the spiritual power and protection that comes from faith rather than physical acts like snake handling. Very well-done video.

I remember him he came to my small town in East Tennessee to help a fellow preacher who was Pentacostal and yes he had as many snakes as Mack!! I was at the church only once for a wedding no snakes that day because I would not have been there!! Also there was another pastor I believe in Virginia who died from a snake bite he was friends with Mack and the local preacher here in my hometown!! I live close to the Virginia and Kentucky border as well so tragic I'm a Christian but I don't think God asked us to do that I don't but if God told me himself I would but he hasn't so

I was raised Pentecostal and I believe in all of the signs following them that believe in his Name . The problem I have with handling serpents is that Everytime I've seen it and watched videos of people handling them in church, I've never seen anyone lay hands on somebody and God heal them from cancer or bring em up out of wheelchairs and I've never saw devils being cast out or any of the other signs except handling serpents . Now I'm not saying it's not happened, I'm saying I've never seen it where I live or anywhere else that they handle serpents. However I have saw Miracles happen in several different churches including deaf ears opened and blind eyes opened and I promise you it wasn't a bunch of Abra Kadabra stuff. A lot of it was little small innocent children that was absolutely blown away because they'd been healed. I'm just saying I'd much rather pray for someone to be healed or someone delivered from demonic possession than I ever would handling serpents .

My father’s family is from Lee County in Ky and I had heard stories about this same thing. About snakes in their church and their beliefs about casting out demons and healing the sick and I can’t deny what is in the Word Of God about these things but I am too scared to even pick up a non venomous snake not alone one of those timber rattlers! My grandmother called the yukka plant the cemetery plant. I live in Central KY. They are found in old cemeterys here too. I have also heard them called Ghosts in the Graveyard.
I worked for Fanning funeral home back in 83 when the one had died from a snake bite. I remember while there, to make sure I watched out for what boxes I picked up. Mainly because the snake boxes almost looked exactly like boxes that we carried light stands in for the coffins. I was nervous as a wreck the whole time I was there. And yes, they handled snakes during the funeral. This took place in Jolo West Virginia.
I'm a funeral director / embalmer in Northeastern KY. In all the years I worked in the business, I never had one of those services. But there aren't any of those churches in Northeastern Kentucky that I'm aware . They are all in Southeastern Kentucky.

Thanks for the story .... I was raised in a pentacostal church ... I believe the Bible from Genesis to Revelation... Never handled a snake 🐍 never been to snake handling church .... We've learned a helluva lot in 2k years. We're expected to apply it and revise it as we keep learning. That pastor wanted to entertain for ego purpose or childlike attn seeking. The church isn't a concert or entertainment venue. God values wisdom & knowledge; respect other creatures' differences like culture, race and genuine sexuality. My late church Pastor was quasi-Pentecostal. So, when he said that snake-handling is a foolish misinterpretation, that's an understatement. Discernment, not literacy, is most important. Respectfully done Leo, I too just don't understand the whole snake handling concept but, I've always respected others beliefs ! I'm from Johnson county Kentucky and just about everything you and Mrs. Heather do reminds me of "back home"! I am a believer in the Bible, however it is now known that the second half of the book of Mark was not in any original manuscripts of scripture and possibly was added later by a believing writer to complete the chapter. Those words about snakes is not found in any other part of the 4 gospels or any other place in the Bible. I think some of these snake handlers don’t understand that this is not something we are supposed to do, but a metaphor to tell us that He will with us in difficult situations. Lord, Leo, you know I have been too many snake-handling churches growing up in Logan County. We visited churches over in Mingo County, Wayne County and even over at McDowell County at War. ! I’ve seen a few bitten and sent to the hospital. Son and father both died at Logan General Hosptial. They were from the church over at Micco above Switzer in Logan County. Beautiful scenery. I hate snakes. I had to close my eyes & only listen. There have always been zealots. I would do a lot of things for my faith but snakes are a big hard NO when my grandsons want to do something crazy their mother tells the little boys "that is a terrible idea" Snake handling in church is a terrible idea. Bad choices have bad ends.

I was raised Pentecostal not one of them that taught me the way of God has ever said you need to pick up serpents to make it to heaven I was always told you play with snakes you'll get bit by a snake so I stay far away from all snakes doesn't matter what kind they are

I always wanted to visit this area of West Virginia. What happened to his church? Though I embrace the Pentecostal movement....I don't do snakes. I admire his tenacity...he committed much time to the ministry.....he wasn't in it for money.
I live in Ky grew up in Eastern ky. I remember when I was young my parents would take us to different churches. Being Pentecostal we visited many different churches in Ky, WVa, Va, Tenn, OH, Carolinas, etc. anyway, I have been to a few snake handling churches. These people would talk in tongues, run around the church like a race track hollering and screaming, dancing, etc. it was enough to scare the hell out of you, especially if you was a child. Those snakes scared me half to death, they was throwing those things around like they was nothing.

As you said do not tempt the Lord thy God. I would never recommend taking up serpents, but, there have been alot more people that have handled them without being bit than those who have. It would take someone alot smarter than me to explain it but I feel like it's as dangerous to pass judgment on someone else's standings with God as it is to handle that mean ole rattler!

It is also legal in Tennesee where a friend of mine married a girl who was raised in " the primitive Baptist church" in Franklin, this bunch doesn't hold with photography ( it's creating " graven images" to them) and they also don't hold with Wedding receptions, having just a " sweet table" after such events but my buddies uncle bought a go pro and fastened it to his leg in order to produce a wedding video for my buddies friends at home, I haven't heard from him in awhile so I don't know if he's still married but at least count he had two daughters with one on the way.
If you swim in shark infested water, expect to get shark bitten.
If you're playing with poisonous snakes, expect to get bit.
But don't expect me to handle that situation peacefully!

I`ve been bitten by copperheads but thankfully nothing worse and the bites weren`t severe. One was on my hand while clearing brush, one was on my right ankle in the woods while metal detecting, and one was on my right big toe by a baby one in my friend`s yard at night. The ones on my hand and my ankle were the worst but I didn`t go to a doctor. The bite on my hand where one fang got me melted a small hole in the skin and a lot of the venom came out within a minute.
I was mildly sick for several days and my shoulder muscles quit working for 6 weeks. I couldn`t drive for a few days because I couldn`t see well and felt dizzy and strange with light sensitivity. My hand was bruised and swelled along with my forearm the next morning.
The ankle bite caused a lot of swelling in my foot and I had to stay in bed for 5 days. The toe bite swelled and blistered very fast and when it popped I felt better and was ok. It hurt the worst so I`m not sure what kind it was. I had trouble breathing for a few minutes.
Rattlesnakes & cottonmouths have never tried to bite me. I stepped on a rattlesnake`s tail once and he politely tapped my foot to let me know. I moved him to a safer place and thanked him.
The fulfillment of what that verse was talking about was in Acts when Paul was bitten by a serpent and did not die. It was not meant for all of us to handle snakes.

I have never been able to understand how people can take parts of God's word and make it the whole focus. They totally ignore the scripture that says it is written that THOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THY GOD. Which to me, if you go out purposefully and do dangerous things, thinking you won't die, is tempting God.

I really like your humanity. As an atheist myself I don’t understand why he would allow himself to be killed by a snake when he could have been saved by a very simple anti venom. But I also support his right to do that. As long as he wasn’t endangering others without their consent. Care about your fellow human beings is the key, no matter what their beliefs. I got the holy ghost snake handling proves nothing about a person having faith, just proves God has mercy on ignorance.. the whole reason God gave us the Holy Ghost wasn’t to handle snakes but to bare fruit and be a light that’s just as bad as the ones that say you have to keep the sabbath and are bound by law.
