Bitcoin Mining at a Flare Gas Oil Well Site. BTC Farm Tour.

  • I took a trip with ‪@YourFriendAndy‬ to tour a bitcoin farm that runs on otherwise wasted stranded Flare Gas from an oil pump. Capturing the wasted energy of the oil industry to make a profit.
    Mining with Flaregas from an Oil Field is surprisingly green! During the process of pumping oil out of the ground, you also pump out a bunch of water and wasted natural gas. Oil companies tend to simply light that gas on fire and burn it into the atmosphere! Clever bitcoin miners have found a way to redirect that wasted gas into a generator, where it runs cleaner and can produce very cheap power with no extra pollution to run S19J pros and improve the network.

      When I learned about flaring at oil sites I was completely dumbfounded! How on earth is that allowed? Or how is there no way to get a generator in there to just get that power on the grid.. Its bonkers.

    Where would be the best place to see real numbers of this operation? Upfront cost, cost of electricity (if any, a little confused if the energy is essentially free here since ite being converted), and how much btc is mined daily. Electricity costs seem to be the biggest cost in mining other than upfront costs so trying to see if this can actually be profitable if scaled up

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      So at this particular facility, the electricity is literally free. It comes from excess gas that this oil drilling operation literally just burns off into the atmosphere - so insterad they run the gas through an old generator. Unfortunately, they wouldnt tell me the costs of all the infrastructure to do that - someone needs to know how to tap into that gas, someone needs to get their hands on a big generator, someone has to do all the wiring and make all the structures up to code - and then you have to keep things cool enough to operate in a desert. BUT, the ongoing electricity is literally free - so the real cost would be whatever deal you can talk your way into with an individual oil field owner who will have no idea what you mean when you say "mine bitcoin."

    I've been buying S-19's from Chris at Musk Miners for a few months now to build our own farm using stranded gas from a well we had to shut down because of a gas pipeline shutting down. Not wanting to vent the gas to produce the oil, we've lost a significant stream of revenue, but once deployed to mine BTC, we can safely produce the oil and efficiantly burn otherwise wasted natural gas. The guys at Musk are great to deal with and provided a lot of info to help us build our facility! Great video guys!

    not "oil derrick", its a pumpjack. ;) but yep. flare stacks are on fire all over the planet and some spots around me have started using the gas to run generators. dont know of anyone who is currently doing mining with it, there were plans to do that but never went operational by me.

    On another note, I had planned to let musk miners host my s19j pro’s and KD miner. That was until I saw that they only except miners purchased through them. Funny their s19’s are 1-2k higher than their competitors. What a shame with our residential swepco rates so high and solar as high to get into and no grid buy back puts us in a corner. It’s always something in the way.

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How many miners do you have? They will tend to make an exception in some cases once there are extra slots. They plan to put a couple more containers down in this spot. I havent looked for a while, but normally their prices are on par with their competition in America - if you go with a chinese supplier you can take the risk and get them cheaper; often times youll get stuck with the import fees which can be quite a lot as well. I imagine they will price match for you if you plan to expand.

    Thanks for another informative video Nicholas. However, I’m not sold that this is a net good. Sure, under the current situation where the choice is between “dig up oil and waste the gas” vs “dig up oil and utilize the gas”, undoubtedly latter is better. But how about we don’t dig up the oil? All of this increases our dependence on fossil fuel. Coming up with different use cases for its waste products, and incentivizing the overall process even more seem to me like a step in the wrong direction. But I have to admit, as things stand, this is by far the best energy source for mining! Happy to hear counterarguements.

    • @Marc-Gee
      @Marc-Gee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to think the same. But things changed. You should listen to Brian Gitt or Michael schellenberger. (TH-cam or as a podcast). In short - oil usage isn't going away if also you want a better life for all the humans. But the METHANE? Yes- that needs to stop yesterday!

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Counterargument (I didnt know that was one word): I am not an oil man. Neither is Musk Miners an oil man. Hence, this is a net good because this oil man was already here; this well has been here for years and years just blowing partially burned natural gas into the air. There is literally no human alive who can talk this oil man into shutting down this well.
      But what he CAN be talked into doing is diverting the gas to run through a generator, which burns the gas far more completely, spewing some amount less carbon overall than would have been spewed without the bitcoin miner getting involved.
      If you multiply this effect across the HUNDREDS of wells that are today burning flare into the air, it will be an even more positive good.. Not to mention, the bitcoin miner cant be talked out of bitcoin mining, either - so every bit of mining that takes place with this gas is a bit of mining that DOESNT take place at a coal fired or additional gas fired plant somewhere else.
      Your ball.
