Albert Lea

  • If you've ever made a trip down to Iowa, chances are you've had to pass through Albert Lea, one of the largest towns in southern Minnesota. It luckily found itself at the crossroads of I-90 and I-35, which was decided when the US Interstate system was created by President Eisenhower. The project was one of the largest engineering projects in US history, and the decision to put Albert Lea at an interstate intersection has kept the city moving.
The Myre-Big Island State Park is located just outside of town and it boasts as one of the largest patches of an almost-extinct natural habitat: the Oak Savannah.
I'd absolutely suggest stopping here when you have the chance, or taking the time to do some camping in the plains. In the earlier or later months of the year, campsites in this region may be more comfortable because they're some of the first (and last) to get the warm winds of the south.

@@2Wheels1Compassgiven how similar the names are, I'd be surprised if there isn't an ongoing lawsuit about those names...

While there are indeed lots of Hy-Vee grocery stores in southern MN, I would quibble with your claim that Hy-Vee is "king" in the region for supermarkets.
I can only speak on my experience living in Mankato for nearly 10 years (~30mins west of Albert Lea, plenty to do there too), but Hy-Vee was pointed at as the grocery store for the wealthier set. Sure, they have a wide selection of locally sourced products and higher quality overall, but that's also reflected with a much higher price tag for even the most basic goods. Ask the average person in that area where they shop for groceries, and unless it's the only game in town they won't say it's Hy-Vee. They're more likely to say Cub, or Aldi, or even Wal-Mart.
