- High visitor numbers are turning one of Britain's most scenic lakes green, researchers say.
A report funded by the UK space agency suggests a link between peak tourist periods and algal blooming at Windermere in the Lake District.
Algal blooming is caused by warm temperatures and nutrients, and can make the water green and toxic.
Campaigners are linking the blooms to discharges of sewage, which although mostly treated, are nutrient-rich.
United Utilities, the local water company, insists its wastewater plants can cope with peak tourist periods

Correction: it's private water companies serving the interests of their shareholders who are responsible for purposely polluting our water. Not tourists. Bring the companies back into public ownership and stop the sewage dumps.
Ceo's should be in a small locked room. Many people are made sick by their actions.

Calm down Stalin.
In this case it is the tourists. I understand where you are coming from but I would not say they are purposefully polluting the lake. I felt this was not a well balanced segment. They did a bad job of explaining the treatment process and didn’t show it. As a person who is not a member of any cult I always look for the truth. I hope in the future our water companies become public but I people realise how much that will cost and there is the chance they will not be much better and costing taxpayers a great deal more. I always look for a balanced view and try not to be blinkered by fanatics.
u duped tards ROCK!
How are tourists to blame for bozo water companies and their excessive sewage discharges?
The more tourists there are the more sewage there is to dump.
It is easier to blame you and me for the failures of the scientists.
It’s your crap that’s causing the problem.
duh duh duh the sewage IS FROM the Fauken TOURISTS! duh duh duh
@@Bungle-UK but tourist spent money why don't you tiny Brits use that money to build proper system
In the first five seconds you disprove yourself, it's companies, not people
English propaganda can be next level. It’s the tourists’ fault that sewage is discharged into the lake. Not the municipality or water companies 😂
The poop from all the surrounding businesses and hotels! cafe's restaurants are all guilty!
Guys he said no poop in the water
Piss is still sewage not to mention whatever else 🤢
Blame others for failure classical little Brits, They even blame foreigners if their wife got pregnant
SEVERAL LEVELS. The effluence is all in this coverage, everyone. 💩💩💩💩💩💩
What is peoples waste doing in the lake ?
The title of this story suggests, it's the tourist fault for crapping on holiday. Not at all the water/sewage companies or local council for doing the wrong thing or nothing at all.
This happens to lakes all over England with no tourists
these types of algae blooms are primarily due to phosphates from sewage discharge and fertilizer run-off. The surge in tourists is coincidental, not necessarily causal. treat your sewage. reduce fertilizers and other run-off. many factors must be considered and be a part of the cure.
Record high dividends paid to their shareholders, and not towards investments, that's where the money goes😣
Havnt we learned
Everything is our fault
And they will charge us for it
hey UK tards, try use that brain.....
nitrogen =GREEN WATER
nitrogen is from human/animal waste....period!
duh duh drool.
It is the responsibility of the sewage treatment plants to treat the sewage properly before letting it in to the lake.we cannot blame the tourists. Algae cause eutrophication thereby oxygen is depleted and fish can no longer survive.Sea weeds and shellfish growth should be encouraged so that the harmful nitrogen will be removed from the algae
Oh, it must be the tourists having pees and poos while they swim not the water company.
Correlation doesn't mean causation, both events (growth of algee and increased number of people) might be caused by something else (like the season) or a moltitude of other factors
Exactly
Just like CO2 and Temp has no correlation and I've looked at the data. It's a lie.
Untreated sewage... what are the odds of that, maybe ask the Water Company if they know anything? The lake has been a popular tourist destination since 1847, so please don't pull tourism out of the hat as the reason why.
What an absolute load of tosh... how the f#ck do tourists turn the water green? Do they all bring some green food colouring with them and throw it in the water?..
hey tard, try use your n-bred brain plz....pee and poo will ALWAYS turn water green....via algae.. duh duh duh
Science is hard. It's okay not to get it 👍
Algae-NON. B.S. in this broadcast. Flush it hard!
Who still listens to the BBC is my question...
Odd. You’d think Coniston Water would be turning green with jealousy due to Lake Windermere’s higher tourist numbers.

Gotta keep those pension funds and rich folks’ investments growing even if it means we literally live in shit
So blame the tourists for poor water treatment
Hilarious
I would be interested to hear the impact of agricultural run off from increased use of fertilizers and higher numbers of livestock on the fells too. Aside from just the bad water management, I think its important to talk about this aspect because as far as I know most of the Lake District is suffering from a degraded landscape due to overgrazing. Overgrazed land means more soil and animal poo entering the water, combine that with heavy rainfall events due to climate change and this effect could be a contributing factor.
The attack on tourists worldwide this year is a phenomenon
It's the start of the 'stay at home' campaign
hey UK tards, try use that brain.....
nitrogen =GREEN WATER
nitrogen is from human/animal waste....period!
duh duh drool.
It does seem that way. Places within Japan are cracking down, Cornwall is cracking down, it goes on...
So stupid... put in proper sewage discharge treatment facilities there to solve the simple problem... it is ludicrous to blame the tourists visitors !!
Tourism caused algae blooms 😂😂😂😂
The number one reason for sudden algae blooms on lakes is fertiliser!
What is surrounding the lakes?
Farmland.
What do farms use?
Large amounts of fertiliser! 🤦♂️
This is basic school level science!
Hey farmers are Brits, Lets blame foreigners instead
For obvious reasons my town is better than Windermere.
The same thing happened to green lake in Kunming. Nitrate run off caused algae to bloom, deprived the water of oxygen and killed all the marine life in the water.
Lake Septic Tank.
Of course its the water companys.
The Lake District needs tourism more than it needs robbing water companies.
Frighteningly low levels of nutrients are required in a water body to result in disastrous eutrophication. Even the best quality waste water discharges won't suffice. THE LAKE MUST BE BY-PASSED.
Bad journalism.
Then it is not by tourist …the poor sewerage system is the cause
Those Windermere peaks look like the perfect place to cry
We. As in the UK need higher standards of treatment. But the bigger picture is our wastewater infrastructure as a nation can't cope.
5:01 'UNITED' now, are we? HIGHER BILLS? Putting the blame...right at the 'consumer's' door. Wow
Before increasing customer bills maybe check how much profit the company makes first and use that.
I'm studying environmental law in America and I'm curious if the UK has something similar to the Clean Water Act that the water company could potentially be found in violation of if it's not meeting certain discharge standards?
We have no real Judicial currently.
The UK is run by corporates and the government has just past a bill to ensure profits above all remains the objective.
We do but they get fines that are no where near their profits
No little Brits are busy blaming others for their own failure
@@cocos8903 👍🏻👍🏻And what there is, they pocket money from their 'special interest Overlords'
Now are they gonna re-report it was the water company dumping sewage water in?
Eutrophication is a big problem with Canadian lakes, and is caused by a combination of things, but mainly : high temperatures, sewage effluent and lawn and farm fertilizers leaching into the lake from run-off. Even the lack of natural shoreline vegetation can contribute to the problem.
My god the bbc have gone rogue
This speculation. As in not proven.
I was there in the mid 70's and the water was disgusting in those days! Never think to swim! Madness!
You think it’s the water company but he literally says there is no poo in the water
This doesn't explain an almost identical, but more severe outbreak in Loch Neagh in Northern Ireland
Stop using your brain. It's a natural occurrence.
Perfect opportunity to promote disaster tourism. More, more, more.
Basically, the wastewater treatment plant has no capacity to handle the amount of pollutants during the tourist season, which means the company needs to expand its plant, and customers or taxpayers must pay for the cost, one way or another.
Social engineering propaganda. The slow, but sure, attack on travel.
Nice Lake to ramble around!
"...to enable us to grow sustainably". That is the human predicament in a nutshell. You can't beat maths.
Think.
Could.
Suggesting.
Maybe…..
Classic bbc.
You should be called the speculation news channel!
Not the 10 million litres of raw sewage illegally dumped in the middle of the lake….
BBC gaslighting
Certainly looked on when I visited a week ago, I did a video
Not one single mention of the main culprit. Animal agriculture.
Science develops solutions to problems that were developed by science.
And water temperature increasing from climate change causes blue green to grow
So this report is saying tourist are shitty?
It's not the raw sewerage that's being pumped into it then?
Ive got an idea just poo in the lake treated waste obviously has problems
I hope nobody in the country is still paying them.
Not agriculture…?
Smells like shite to me.😅👍
If you are unhappy with how these companies dispose of your waste then simply stop using their services.
Continuing to do so while moaning about it is very hypocritical.
Translation: stop drinking water and shitting in the toilet.
@@bishton No need for that. Simply go off grid. Not hard to do, not expensive and best of all saves a lot of money.
Eutrophication 😢
Mmm fix the sewerage runoff with decent infrastructure - simple if a little expensive perhaps…
Climate change and sewage
UK space agency 🤣🤣🤣🤣
super sad to see, the algae will kill anything if not avoided!
Happens every year at this time.......... ignorance galore
It might also be that the water is wet or that it's the fish or too many immigrants or Europe... research has shown...
It was an illegal dump anyone with holidays there contact there water company to claim compensate as you or your pets cant swim in it now they illegally dumped waste were are victims. I'm 800 down on a weekend holiday now due to hearh I can't bow go
Is there much agriculture runoff into the lake? Multifactorial causes for this
Rubber bungs are about £15. Just sayin 😉
Biogas engineering pls
It's the fact that the water is getting warmer due to climate change. Florida has this problem, and it's not because of sewage!
Its the sheep
安理會對於國民黨軍的階段性軍事政變計劃,有什麼看法??
Humans will spoil EVERYTHING beautiful!
🤢
just stop the rank and file going altogether and save it for the rich people..
Why is that called a lake? The ottawa river is wider in most places
Algae is good.
Provides oxygen.
More green nonsense.
Nationalise the water companies

duh, even the Undertones singer knows..... duh duh duh
