@Me, Also Me I agree with the second part, but i can't say the same thing for the first part. Like, how can you be so fucking delusional about what a joke is. The bass is a luthier-made instrument for 6750$ upwards, it's in no way a beginner instrument, simply because it's a huge investment. If i was the son of a rich guy, i would've loved to have a Wal bass as my first bass, but i am not. If i was, i wouldn't have needed anything more. A good instrument is never "too much" for a beginner. The better it is, the more you want to play it. Those are facts. But if you think that i "don't have the balls to be assertive", because i called an obviously expensive bass a beginner bass, then by all means, give your son or daughter a Wal bass as their first instrument. I bet that's gonna be a VERY assertive move. Maybe you'll even get to keep it, when your kid says that they wanted a guitar or piano instead.
My dream bass... Such a versatile instrument. I WILL own one someday. I appreciate the video for the tonal explanation/demonstration. I rarely see one vid with all of the settings played out. Thanks for posting.
WOOT if you can't afford a Wal, the G&L L2000 (4 string) & L2500 (5 string) can get the Wal sound for thousands cheaper. The Wal is my favorite bass too but out of my price range 😭
Nathan Haynes get a g&l l-2000 bass. They sound almost exactly like a wal, and a brand new usa one custom built for you is only like 2 grand tops and 2 month wait. Not bad. They also look a lot like wals with the 2 large humbucker pickups.
I had 50 dollar EB stingray with a bridge hum bucker and i gave it to my cousin and bought a Fender Jazz MXC for 500 and i miss the Stingray. It had the tone that I was aiming for, it got me closer to any Justin Chancellor sound more than any other bass Ive owned. Starting with the hum buckers, the Way bass have super sealed pickups with no air with gives that low with mid range bite sound. The Wal and Ricky 4001-4003 series offer a bass with low radius fretboards to allow better scaling and technique like slap and aggressive play styles. A radius fretboard serves chords and chords better than this particular style of electric bass.
Great demo of the Wal sound and such a lovely bass. I saw one in Bass Direct and didn't think quick enough. The waiting list is about 3-4 years for a build.
Hi, your MK1 has really a perfect tone! i think one of the best sounding Wal on TH-cam. Did you use a preamp for recording? I have an 83 mk1 with wenge facings.
I can tell in the beginning of your video you're very happy to have your new Wal. Happy for you and jealous at the same time. I was going to pull the trigger on a MK1 but can't stomach waiting two years and paying almost 7 to 8 grand, and that's not including custom duties. I would probably never gig with it fearing that it would get ripped off and sold for 5 to 6 grand on craigslist. Sorry, I'm just bitter cause I'll never own one. 😊
I don`t even think that you can get on the waiting list to order one of these basses at the moment. And the price? Over £6000. But I don`t hear any bass in the sound, it all sounds like high end but I`m glad I watched the clip as any desire I had to ever own one of these even second hand, has vanished.
Keep in mind that this was just an impromptu effort I did with a 2013 model iphone. It’s not going to capture the full range of sound. You can get a much better idea of the sound by listening to the classic studio recordings. There’s plenty of low end in real life. All that said, a lot of the character in this bass comes from the midrange. While I’m glad I may have saved you some money, I definitely wouldn’t suggest using this video as a gold standard reference for sound quality. It’s just there to show the way the controls affect the baseline tone.
Although I would have loved to hear this demo recorded direct or mic'd for a better idea of how the low frequencies sound, it is one of the best I have found in YT. Thanks for sharing! I would love to try one of these out.
2.5 years into my wait... I keep hoping they tell me they're working on it... but alas, the last thing we did was pick my top wood... a beautiful Zircote wood..
Is there a cheap alternative to this bass? I really want that kind of sound, could you recommend me something? Im not expecting something of great quality obviously
Nice video. Although it’s actually a Low pass filter, not a high pass. A high pass (or low cut) filters out the lows and allow the highs to pass, hence the name.
kernoja still waiting! Not a lot of us can or are willing to spend $9000 on a bass so youtube vids is all we have. Lol. And since not a crap ton of people that have wal's have posted vids on youtube, there isnt that many at all.
kernoja yeah there just isnt a lot of them to go around. Wal is a small company so i doubt they make very many basses per month. If you were to sell that bass today you could probably get 8-9k for it since it looks to be in great shape.
Just a question... it's a gorgeous bass, but I've heard they sound better than they play. From what I hear, they're extremely heavy with base-ball bat necks. As an owner, what's your opinion?
similar to an Alembic.... have you played one for comparison? Wal seems to have its own character ( muck like Alembic) but they are definitely cousins....
Lots of fun, but subtle. I struggled at first to dial in tones, but after a few weeks it just clicked for me to adjust on the fly. I can get an approximation of my Stingray, or a P, a J, or Gibson with a little tweaking. Just t scared to take in public!
Pascal Bösiger it’s a lot of money yes. But motorcycles, sports cars, drinking, and golf are expensive too. For what it’s worth, it wasn’t $7000 when I bought it, and now it’s probably worth more used than I paid for it new. I can’t say that for most bass guitars.
Andrew Hamblen Incorrect there Andrew. Most of the time Flea recorded with different studio basses: he used Spector NS2, the Wal Mk2, and the Alembic. He then used the StingRay for just the live work.
sorry man, I saw too many vids like this. guys playing a Wall, but don't have the skills (imo). playing in a Tool tributeband, I really would like a bass like this. just frustated man. wasn't personal, you seem like a nice guy. peace ;-) think you were a bit nervous when filming this. try to be relaxed, also on the bass.
Great starter bass! Has just the right amount of features for a beginner bassist and great build quality for it's affordable price range!
what the fuck lol this thing is for advanced/professional level bassists it's like $10k usd with full specs, how is it an affordable price range

"Wal mark 1"
I thought i had clicked on the wrong video when i heard that
It is jasons bass in ajfa
Beautiful bass guitar! I love the headstock on these!
A mix between stingray and rickenbacker. Heaven
And harmonics of a stingray!
That sound from Big Money on Power Windows is just insane.. Love it
Thanks Shaun! It's a fun sound to be able to make.
Excellent breakdown of the various tones. You nailed Flea's BSSM tone and Geddy's tones.
really nice bass, I love the default tone! Very impressive!
god… that Geddy tone… to me, that was his peak tone

Stingray, ProCo TurboRat with barely any distortion and a decent amp.
Tim Renken I wouldn’t say “almost exactly like a Wal” pretty far from. Similar tone in some ways but not in most ways.
My Dingwall NG3 will do all these tones just fine.
Great demo of the Wal sound and such a lovely bass. I saw one in Bass Direct and didn't think quick enough. The waiting list is about 3-4 years for a build.

Such a beautiful looking bass. I want 1 😭
Hi,
your MK1 has really a perfect tone! i think one of the best sounding Wal on TH-cam. Did you use a preamp for recording?
I have an 83 mk1 with wenge facings.
Hey Joe thanks for the nice words. I recorded the bass plugged straight into the Mesa 400+ head and a 2x12 cabinet. Nothing else in the signal chain.
Hi,
@@kernoja if you want to trade or sell it,
plese let me know.
Thanks.
Great demo! Thank you
Lusithand makes an NFP filter preamp that is Wal/Alembic inspired. I put one in my pbass. It's amazing for those of us who can't afford a Wal
Thank you so much for this
That is a glorious bass! Some day....some day :)
Good demo. Some of the Wal demos on YT are so crappy!
That's awesome! Love the Rush!
I like that finish as well.
That sound of the bass full blast was instantly "Flea on BloodSugarSexMagic"
Wow hearing this the first song that came into my head was The Righteous and the Wicked off of BSSM!!!!!
Funnily enough that was one of two songs on BSSM that were recorded with a Musicman Stingray rather than the Wal!
