Exactly, and that's what makes him likable. The media doesn't seem to get that people just DON'T GIVE A FUCK about them. Jokic is a guy who just wants to play a game,be the best and get paid for it. It's his job. Most fans just want to watch the game itself, without all the ancillary drama. ESPN and Fox have basically become TMZ for sports - so much so,that TMZ itself launched a sports division . This channel is the best exception to the rule that I've seen, because WhatSlaps doesn't shit on the players, nor does he create this classist narrative that turns fans against players like most sports media does.

The segment on Michael is quite literally why Kwame Brown's career was a disaster
He wanted to use that draft pick and make a big splash, and used it on a HS player in hope he would develop
THEN unretired and relentlessly bullied a player who was barely more than a child and stifled his development even more (because the team went from "we'll develop Kwame and around Kwame" to "we need to win now" overnight after Michael unretired)

If you are just "happy" to play basketball like Jordan Poole you get shown up. The average player only lasts 4 seasons. Yet its the superstars that are there longer.
It doesnt mean that one loves the game more. Some are better. KD can load manage, barely play 60 games, but he is simply superior to most players. Whether they like the game of basketball or not.
Kwame Brown loves and loved being an NBA player. He says the NBA was "scripted" against him but scripted to favor Lebron and Luka Doncic, etc.
Love of the game means nothing, thats fake. Chances are all of them love NBA in some way. Not everyone can be that level

I think it’s easy to look at stars like these finished products who were always that good when we forget that what makes them so great is all the tiny aspects of their game they honed in to become the players that we see them as now and assume they always were.
(Example: Embiid and his midrange, Anthony Edward’s defense, idk there’s probably a bunch more. Those might not even be the best examples of what I’m talking about. Honestly there’s probably at least one for every player if you look closely)

Lebron and Jordan came from entirely different eras. During the 1980s it was common for teammates to fight and conflict each other (says Isiah, who shrugged the Jordan Poole/Draymond Green punch saying its nothing compared to 1980s teammate conflict.)
Today,,everyone acts extra nice for social media rules. And people freak out over a Kyrie Irving tweet that would be "normal" in the 1980s.
But Lebron does curse out his Lakers quite a bit on court. And he does publicly blame his Lakers teammates for Lakers losses. Westbrook has described playing as Lebron as toxic. But this is a different era where most people act fake and nice nice for social media

Good video, great for opening interesting discussions. Two points: 1) The beef between MJ and Jerry Krause was not in one direction. Krause was extremely competitive himself and claimed that primarily, his work and the organization won championships, not Jordan and the team. He dismantled a dynasty only to prove he could put up a new team and win again, and he claimed that the first title without Jordan would erase the Jordan cult, proving it was the organization and not MJ that led Chicago to glory. Of course, that didn't happen, and it didn't happen because MJ was right and Krause was wrong: the players win, not the organization. If you think it this way, it was Krause the arrogant one and the bully in that environment, not MJ -who, after all, had already won the NCAA and two gold medals with the USA as a college player to Krause and Bulls' nothing.
    2) People were not as "sensitive" in previous historical periods as they supposedly are today. Punching someone on the court or trash talk was not considered bad or a lack of love for the game. Jordan did nothing so different than other stars of that time. Barkley, whom you've shown as a happy man as compared to MJ's ultra-competitiveness, was, in fact, notorious for his trash-talking and bullying opponents and had several brawls. Also, Michael was everybody's dirty game primary target. I remember the "Mr. Cooper" TV series. Mr. Cooper has signed with the Golden State Warriors as a bench player. He returns home and says, "Today in practice, they had me as Michael Jordan." "That's amazing!" someone says. He responds: "Not really. They practiced how to foul him without the referees seeing it."
PS. LeBron James suffers from narcissistic trauma. You hadn't got it before that record game because that's what happens with manipulative narcissists. His former teammates hate him. Look how Wade and Bosh ignored him in their HOF speeches while they praised MJ, Kobe, AI, and more. Or how Irving said the other day that the OKC series was the hardest he ever played, downplaying the GSW finals.

He doesnt want to be this mega star. Hes just a normal dude with an insane basketball IQ. The last 2 minutes were amazing. U are clearly a passionate fan and can see beyond the bs of BR, HOH, ESPN. Just as Jokic does. Its a nice refresher to have a star who doesn't care what the media thinks bc at the end of the day it means nothing whether you get 5 mil likes on an insta story and whatactually matters is whether you are happy and satisfied with what you have achieved. This is the reason I also dont think Ben simmons is a good player. He lets the media and narratives get to him. he gets too caught up and he needs to start playing properly again. what is life without its mistakes. he needs to grow up and learn

Here's a real self indulgent idea I'd like to see entertained by people smarter than me: MJ's ideal was that his team should play the game to the level of intensity and precision that he was presenting, so what if they did? What's the final meta of NBA Basketball actually look like when half of the players, talented enough to get into the NBA, are doing everything right and the other half are all, at minimum, Luka or Kobe skills and practice wise.

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think there's nuance to it and the game is always evolving, so there's a base level of commitment and intensity. After the base level the time spent on the game had diminishing returns. (just riffing)

JJ Reddick is a business partner of Lebron. The podcast was not out of pure love for the game. It was both to push certain narratives as well as push for JJ Reddick to be a coach for the Lakers.
Lebron has also arranged for Klutch Sports agents (Rich Paul) to directly try to influence the media for Lebron MVP voting. For a sum of cash. Lebron's actions are generally under the table but simply due to the social media era. You are not going to play with Lebron and have a fun field day walking in flowers. You are signing up to be a scapegoat. If you coach Lebrom you are highly likely to be FIRED by him. Faster than any player in history.
Difference is, we are in a social media era where people are more protective of their images. The "love of the game" is nonsense with the constant coach firing and threats of player trading. Its just a social media image. And the JJ Reddrick podcast thing was a setup to get him as Lakers coach. Nothing more

That idea that KAT presents is kinda crazy. Never really thought about that but that is true, from as soon as you start in the league there is no stop. Next practice, next game, work harder, keep going, try and get better. Of course it's all in the (proper) spirit of competing and trying to progress and get better, but sheesh, sounds daunting. Jordan was another animal, his goat status (pun sorta intended) I think at least partially comes from his ruthlessness against opponents and teammates alike. His mentality and demeanor along with his off the charts skill and ability is what sets him apart in his own tier as the baddest to ever do it. To the point of your video, is this evil? I'm not sure. In a way I feel bad for someone who has this seemingly utter inability to enjoy what you're doing because perfectionism takes over and outweighs all else. Imagine being so good (and so competitive) at something that playing against the best in the world is not satisfying to you because you're not being challenged enough. The Bron and JJ stuff is interesting to me too, definitely seems to be a shift in mentality/approach to the game itself as a whole. Analytics vs "ooh he nice wit it" is a good comparison. Not sure I've ever heard a shoutout to Rick Barry in a hoops video, so good on you for recognizing game where most probably never even think to look. Good breakdown of Simmons, those points all seem to ring true. Poole appears to be a silly guy, yeah trying too hard to do/be what you can't. Jokic looks like a real cool dude, awesome talent, mad chill personality, keeping ego in check, just out there doing his (super talented) thing and then back to normal regular real life guy after the game is over. Thank you again broham, yo vidz iz tha nicest. Appreciate you fam, you know that.

I think Kobe and MJ were manipulators. I have a feeling he played a lot of psychological games with his teammates and opponents. He knew how to get into people's head. I think he also backed up his massive ego, which is pretty rare in sports now. A lot of guys will find a way explain their greatness, where Jordan made it so you couldn't deny it. I think Lebron is non-confrontational and it's cost him some finals. If Lebron had the Kobe/MJ mentality he would have brought more out of his teammates. Of course I'm totally speculating haha. I love the different personalities we have in the league now. Thanks for checking back in brother!

My best friend is insanely competitive, even with stuff that doesn't really have any real stakes. For example when we are playing casual co-op video games his tendencies still pop up regularly, usually getting a little upset when we don't do as well as we could. He seems to get more enjoyment from winning than me but on the other hand he can spend a looong time ruminating on what could've been done differently etc. Maybe this is just a classic example of higher highs and lower lows and it all balances out but it still looks pretty stressful.

From using Kat as an example of being passionate, to being confused why player's dont use "true shooting percentage" because it has a negative effect on your game if you decide to use that instead of just how many shots taken in front of or behind the 3.
You should try listening to what players are saying like on Gil's Arena

Mj isn’t a psychopath, psychopath’s don’t cry, psychopaths make people do things they would never do. MJ was obsessed with being the best, he has a gambling addiction, among many other flaws like most humans. Psychopaths don’t bring up such well adjusted kids that were unaware of their father’s greatness till they were way older. There is a difference.

Is that true that psychopaths don't cry?

With Jordan, his competitive nature is directly related to his ADHD.
In his day, the only kids noticed with the condition were the hyperactive troublemakers. Jordan didn’t seem to display like that, I guess.
