All I knew of cheddar was that's where the cheese came from. I was embarrassingly deficient in my knowledge of Cheddar, or Somerset for that matter. What a gorgeous place. For a cheese toasty loving lad I would be in my element with all that cheddar. My cheese shelf is chockers with varieties of cheddar. Mostly from Oz but one from Snowdonia (thanks Postcard and a Pint). Funny you should mention Rach and Wills picking strawbs for the first time in 25 years. We went berry picking in January for the first time in a decade or two as well. 2022 must be the year of the berry. And we're going to give it another burl after Christmas. I have videos of our berry picking coming so stayed tuned in 2025 or something.
Loved this not too cheesy intro to Cheddar. Dare I say it was Tasty. Some great drone work from Ian too. Now I have to try and stopping roaring like Chewy. 🐻😂

The castle is Banwell castle, it is near the village of Winscombe where I used to live about 35 yers ago. It is clearly visable on google earth. When I lived there I took my seven year old daughter to Banwell castle for a birthday treat, just me and her. We had a traditional strawberry cream tea with scones. My little girl just loved going to that old castle where she was treated like a lady.
I have just done a quick google search and it would appear that they now have a restaurant and bed and breakfast so you can stay there if you want.

Dara. Another great video. Years ago there used to be a railway via Cheddar to the coast with connections to the rest of the UK. The line was known as “The Strawberry Line”. The line, along with many in the UK were closed under Dr, Beeching in the 60’s. An organisation has been set up to rebuild and re-open the line. My dad was a fruiterer and greengrocer and during the summer strawberry season. Dad would buy strawberries in and if the weather had been bad then at shop closing time if there were loads of punnets of berries left he would bring them home with the raspberries as he was closed on Monday’s they wouldn’t keep till next week. So for us, my two brothers mum & dad we would have berries with everything/ strawberries on your Cornflakes is different!. We’d have raspberries in a half-pint schooner topped with ice-cream. Our ice cream came from our local Italian cafe, Cavina’s. All home made Italian ice cream. This was the time when re-fridgeraters and freezers were rare in homes.

A good dry scrumpy will make your gums recede from your teeth. In the west country nearly every farm would make its own, you could tell the quality of it by how badly the roadside sign was made!! I think a lot of that has gone now, thanks to tighter laws. Probably a good thing, some of the rotgut you could get was pretty lethal.😵😵‍💫

    Watch out for that scrumpy!!
I think you can only get the real thing at farms instead of pubs or the shops because the alcohol level is too high for an alcoholic beverage that isn't distilled.
There are at least two brands that you can buy at the shops but they're not the real thing.
The producers will tell you that since scrumpy is made with only apples, sometimes cooking pears, and sugar that it's a 'clean' alcoholic beverage and won't give you a hangover.
This is very very much NOT true.
The taste can vary from batch to batch even made with the same apples by the same producer because it relies on wild yeast strains that are naturally occurring on the skins of the apples to make it alcoholic.
The taste is pretty good and it's really an artisan product that's not rot gut or moonshine.
But I'd stay away from even one pint unless you're in the UK for a long enough that having to spend half the next day in bed with a nasty hangover will not ruin you itinerary or make you feel dumb because you're only there for 5 days and now you're going to be missing out on something.
Plus you're likely to only encounter it in places that aren't public transport friendly.
And of course you should never drink and drive to begin with. Imaging driving on the left while sitting on the right hand of the car and maybe even being not so familiar with a manual transmission car.
It's a recipe for disaster so don't do it.
But do enjoy the berries and especially the cheese that's local to that area as it's amazing.

      @MagentaOtterTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Your cautionary tale sounds like perhaps you have some personal experience?? I'm glad I don't drink... I'm perfectly happy to enjoy the cheese and the berries! I am already plotting my return to Cheddar and a Cheese Taste Test! It simply must be done! Thanks for your comment, Christian!

@@MagentaOtterTravels Yes it was most certainly personal experience but at least I didn't lose a travel day as some of my buddies and I had decided to take a long weekend to go to Cheddar and Glastonberry and around that region.
We were't exactly broke college kids but back then we did travel more on the cheap so the next day we decided to go by bus from Cheddar back to London.
It was the longest worst bus ride I've ever had in my life!
      Cheddar to London via Southampton!!
      Three different busses!!
But it's probably good that I learned this travel lesson when I was 20 because I'm not so sure I could have flown from Dallas to London in that condition.
Heck I'm not sure I could have flown from Dallas to San Antonio.
So yes now for me all the fresh produce and much more cheese than I ever eat here but maybe just one beer or a really good glass or two of wine.
