Just a quick shout out MADs you've got one of the most detailed videos on the aqara wall switch line. Thanks to your previous deep dives i decided to test a few (neutral!) units in advance of an upcoming reno, and will be equipping the whole apt with them - your continuing updates 1 year in is very valuable to keep our confidence in this ecosystem high :)

Hi mads . Thank you so much for your videos! It’s been great and it helped me through my smart home purchases . I have a question that I need some help that I can’t figure out. How do you set up the two way switch functionality with a Aqara switch? How do I wire it?
You may want to try setting automation for a 2 way switch work around which I think I saw in a YT before. E.g. Switch A is connected to lights, and Switch B only live and neutral(no lights). Switch B when on will turn on Switch A and Switch B when off will turn off Switch A and vice versa. A total of 4 automation settings. No complicated wirings..

Cool video! After months of hesitation, I finally tried a single rocker Aqara wall switch...then I got hooked up and got myself another double rocker. But stopped after that as I am also having a two way switch which I tot that’s the end of my lighting automation.
Hi MADS, would like to learn from you and hear from your advise. Currently I have a light, with two normal switches, one at second floor and one at ground floor. If I would to change to smart switches, how would you advise? Some of my switches are D1 with XiaoMi hub. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the video. I’m renovating my house. May i know where did you buy the aqara switch? Also can the aqara hub link up to google home? Thanks in advance
Love your detailed videos MADS... Don’t know if you or anyone knows if I can connect multiple Aqara hubs? I have a 3 bedroom apartment in NY (Brick Walls) and the signal to my water sensors and door sensors is weak and the devices go offline.
Thanks for the video, very insightful for using of smart switches. I was wondering did you automate the water heater switch that turns on and off at specific timing? As i was looking at to auto off the water tank heater at 1am to say 7am.
Jimmy Lim hey, for the water heater switch. I installed it last week. Howeverrrr it belongs to another ecosystem - smart life app bind to google. See my latest video on bedroom tour
hi can check where to I buy xiaomi smart 2 gang switch without neutral the link below not working and also will it work for normal 40w light bulb for the xiaomi smart switch thank you so much in advance
recently had a full reno and decided with full aqara D1 non neutral switches.. So far i have 2 single gang switch that will auto turn off. 1: connected to a LED lights. Intermittently the light will turn off on its on. 2: connected to a Ceiling Fan with Lights. Intermittenly will turn off the fan. Any recommendation?
Hey Mads. Just installed bunch of smart switches, and now the LED light on my fan flickers even when it's supposed to be on off state while my fan is on the on state. Do you have a recommendation of the licensed electrician that helped with your brother that can help me add the capacitor to this?
I just change to Chinese mainland server, and i could not set the automation to turn on the light at maybe 6pm and turn off at 10pm which i can do in SG server. any advise please?
Hi great video! If you use the physical switch interchangably with the app switch, will it be seamless? For example, you turned on the light in the app then used the physical switch to turn it off, will it show on the app that the light is off and will you be able to turn it on in the app again?
Hi there, thanks for the video sharing. At @ Diff versions, you mentioned about the 2 different versions and 1 is more stable, can I ask which one and how to identify them when placing order on Lazada or Taobao? Also like to ask if a Aqara hub is required for the switches so that it connects to the WIFI for phone app to work? Thanks so much.
I have around 10 D1 Neutral Switches and 2 Non Neutral, all 3 gang. So far no really issues. Maybe you should give Home Assistant a go, really gives you a lot of options for automations.
Is it a full system? Do they have household system dishwasher robots thermometers kids toys... 🤣 and the wall switches must be able to automate this... important to my routine. So far only xiaomi is a full suite ecosystem. Only the region issue
@@madsncakes It's actually a complex system which you run locally on a Raspberry Pi or some computer if you want to. It allows you to configure pretty much all of your smart home stuff regardless of brand to it, and you are still able to control it from your phone through their app or you can also still get google/Alexa/siri to control things. You should just look this up on TH-cam, loads of geeks go crazy with this, I myself have just started using it. But since your channel has home automation (particularly Xiaomi products), this seems like a good recommendation.
@@madsncakes You'll have to configure everything to your liking. All kinds of brands are supported, Xiaomi your tuya stuff etc. Right now I have the D1 switches integrated natively to HomeKit, but I have a Roomba which isn't compatible with HomeKit, but through that I made it compatible, I can tell siri to turn on the Roomba etc, every room I have a broad link IR blaster that is also linked to HomeKit (I like the home app that's why I am using HomeKit), I can control fan speed and also my air con. I recently got an Amazon Echo Show (more echo dots on the way) but my D1 switches don't actually support Alexa, but through this, I set up dummy switches in the home app that I can control the D1 switch through Alexa. I am all over the place with my explanation, what it does is that it will be the "brain" for your home automation and it runs locally so you don't need to rely on the cloud if there are small delays.
Hi MADS, love ur videos. I understand that the smart switch needs a mijia hub to work. I want to replace all the switches in my apartment to smart switch. Will my smart switch still work in a room that is located far away from the hub and not in line of sight?
I'm have been using the non neutral switches for 9 months now and they're still going on strong. Have been experiencing random lights off (maybe once in 2 weeks) but only in the kitchen lights, nothing major.
hi MADS, was revisiting your past videos on Aqara switches as i intend to replace some of my traditional switches at home. One of them is a 2-way switch which i havent found a solution - it would be great if you could share how did you do it on the Aqara switches.
Hi MADS, was motivated by your video to buy a aqara d1 non-neutral single rocker. I bought one switch on lazada that works on Singapore server(mihome), but realise it does not pair with the Singapore server of mi control hub. Then on further check I cannot find any mijia/aqara hub that works in Singapore server. So now I'm kinda stucked because I have a switch with no working hub🤔🤔
Hi there! Thank you for all your videos and guides! Can I ask if there is a difference between xiaomi/mijia smart switch vs aqara smart switch? I understand that both require a hub..so was wondering xiaomi hub is it the same as aqara hub? Thank you!!!
I’m still a little confused about two way switch setup. If I do not have neutral wirings, can I still purchase 2 sets of Aqara no neutral switches and get your friend Johnny to reconfigure my wirings to get it working. Or does this only work with setups with neutral wirings?
im going to get my resale flat soon, and the living room is using 2-way switches, possible to do a tutorial to do the wiring for the living room, from the old 2 way to using the aqara switches? :D
hi Benson Lee, have you complete your aqara D switch installation. I am planned to do so soon. My ideals is to convert it to one way before install the D switch.Since is one way , one switch will be by-pass.
Hi MADS, wonder if your Tuya account is still able to Mi Home? I can't seem to do that anymore. Wonder if you automate non xiaomi powerstrips or smart wifi plugs in Mi Home automation. Thanks!
Chanced upon this video, when I was searching for neutral vs non neutral switches for smart home automation. Very informative! Spoke to a few home automation vendors, and many of them advocate for the need for neutral wiring. I am a bit torn in between, because neutral wiring is going to eat up some part of my home automation budget. So ever since you made this video till now almost a year, how was the experience of using non neutral switches? Do you have flickering issues? And reliability / connection issue for your non neutral switches?
In Singapore, we used the "Fire" (Live) at the wall socket, our neutral line is at the light bulb end. This explains why you can "see" the neutral line at the wall socket. I thinks this is SG standard. Again, if you prefer to have a neutral line at the wall socket, this will be a massive job to lay the line, which may cost you a boom.
Hihi, may I check with you. For the switches can it’s be use for my kitchen hood? In my kitchen has 2 Gang switch, it’s for kitchen cupboard LED light and Kitchen Hood. I wanted to change it’s too but afraid the Hood might not suitable.
Why not? It'll work just the same. 2gang or 3gang doesn't matter as long you're not intending to connect it to an aircond or heater. Those require special 20AMP switches. Look it up Celestine.
Hi also, want to check, for your toilet light that was flickering what is the wattage? Do you have any bulbs with less than 7 W in your set up? I read in the specs technically 3W onwards is supported by the aqara switch... what was your lowest rated bulb?
I am using fibaro system. I have re-wired my house 5 years ago so my light switches are having neutral wired in it (problem of UK wiring standard). I am testing the D1 neutral version and will slowly replace my fibaro module over time if there is no reliablity issue for their cloud service. My fibaro system wiring is too complicated as fibaro only come with module. I actually prefer a switch with everything integrated so testing the D1 now, hopefully it is as reliable as my fibaro. Fibaro system is too expensive and their gateway and cloud integration with google is suck. In fact I am using the homeseer as my smarthome hub which is also very expensive in term of price point and the support is so so. I have no seen any advantage of using zwave (fibaro) system. The only problem is the aquara zigbee version is proprietary so it won't work with the other zigbee hub. For the price i got noting to complain.
this is so detailed thank you so much. just a question (very sorry you may had mention in other video and I may have miss it) you mention that you link to China server, will the time on xiaoai is in China? the automation time is in China also?
Like maybe after opening the camera and getting region lock message once in a while it would open to show the live feed but then get region lock after i reenter the app again and my Xiaomi Air Purifier the original one can’t connect to the mi home app the air purifier is malaysia or sg version i forgot but setting up with sg version or malaysian version location in app wouldn’t work and mainland china also won’t work it usually says first sending message to device then has a tick at the side and the purifier light stops blinking and turns solid green but at the last step like connect device to internet or something it would say connection time out each time please help
Unfortunately the region lock.. nothing u can do. I heard of those clone mihome apps but not sure if it can override this. For now Have to switch to correct region...
i manage to solve my dafang camera region lock by just turning off and on again. if still cant work then try to reset and pair again. i have no issue pairing up both my air purifier 2s. make sure your wifi is strong where you put your purifier.
I have 5 different xiaomi cameras from dafang, xiao fang, imilab all are still working fine, 1 of it has region lock and after restarting no longer showing the region lock message. as for your case i am kinda helpless too.
@MADS i also have roborock which is not shown on Mihome App, but i can control with xiaomi AI speaker. I also have smartlife power strips, although ive linked with miHome app, Ive got no luck in getting xiaoAI to control it. Are u able to get xiaoai to control your smartlife plugs?
Hi Mads, do you recommend to use xiaomi hub to control aqara switches? Any difference between xiaomi and aqara hub in terms of response towards switches?
Hi Mads, thank you for the follow up on the non-neutral switch. Just to check so if I have a 3 tone light I cannot use Aqara Non-Neutral Switch right? Thank you
@@madsncakes Ya i guess it should work cos it still depend on the light it self hahah. Anyway after watching this video I finally understand why they dun put neutral wire on switches th-cam.com/video/LaqPDBbMgLM/w-d-xo.html
What's the difference between the updated aqara D1 switches and the previous ones you installed? I like the look of the old switches more (they seem to have rounder corners).
Thanks for sharing! Are you using the aqara hub or the xiaomi hub? May i ask, if the xiaomi app we choose the China server, items bought in singapore will not be compatible? And if we choose the Singapore Server, items bought from taobao will not be compatible?
Hi Mads! Can aqara smart switch work with dimmable led driver? I don’t need the dimmable function though, but my lights driver all are dimmable. And I had a reply from broadlink that their switches can’t work with dimmable drivers/lights. TIA.
Hi MADS, if the Aqara switches are china version, can it still link to Google Home? Appreciate any insights here as I am planning to set up my new place and want to minimize devices that cannot talk to Google Home as I have lots of existing google home and mini. thanks.
Hi Mads, Thank you for your video. I have tried installing and it works for some of the lightings. However, my ceiling fan and track light could not work with the switches. What or how should I do to get it working? Thank you!
Hi MADS, previously I manage to connect my Aqara Hub M1S to my MiHome apps. And it goes well with all my smart switch. Then I'm trying to connect with my Mi Universal IR remote to China Mainland server but unsuccessful. Then I change back to SG server. All my setup all gone including my Aqara hub. I can understand that but when I try to connect it again, it's unsuccessful. It cannot scan my Aqara Hub M1S which previously can. Kindly help. Thanks.
Hello Mads, need your expertise advise. I have being reading up alot of smart home automation. I know that most XiaoMi or Aqara or Moes or other brands device products runs in Zigbee (though some of them may support WIFI or Bluetooth, or Z-wave). I would like to know if I will to use a Aqara Zigbee gateway, can it able to connect with says Moes devices? Likewise, for a Moes Zigbee gateway, can it be able to connect with Aqara devices? As I understand since the devices support Zigbee, it should able interoperable with other brands. Are you able to confirm ? Thanks/Henry
This is awesome, btw are you using one app or few apps to control your total home devices, and is that all fall under the same brand, or there are few. I will be glad to know as i am also working on getting my home on automation and not sure which brand to go with, for now, i am using ewelink app and sonoff devices which don't actually have non-neutral switches. Thank you
Hi MADS, subbed for the content. I have just gotten my house key in malaysia last month and planning to add smart feature with xiaomi home appliances. I have been looking for switches like in this video too. Little comment on the light flickering. LED works on DC supply and LED bulb usually has a full bridge rectifier to convert the AC supply to DC, but without the capacitor to smoothen the conversion, the DC value will drop below certain value and turns off the LED, therefore the LED flickers. Adding a capacitor like in your video is dangerous because capacitor has polarity and rated voltage. Any mistake will set the capacitor to blow up. Better solution is to get a better LED bulb. I think xiaomi switches should not give you flickering light unless the switch contact is failing. I am eyeing on xiaomi mesh lights, ceiling lights and some of those smart switches. Good choice to use the xiaomi infra red to control the fans and aircond in your previous video. Unless you have another router to connect to China VPN, xiaomi voice command gonna be very delayed. Probably that explain why you are not keen to the voice command.
Thanks for sharing! For my place I didn’t use any capacitors or much flickering. All my lights are led cob. Works well Just my lifestyle, instead of talking to google or xiao ai. I prefer switches or apps. Yea I have VPN but I don’t like using it for smart home. Another reason I have too many devices for testing. Right now if I were to say ok google clean the house. All 3 robots will start. I gotta be specific. Ok google start robot pro in the kitchen. 🤣 Ok forget it.
I’m not sure if the (yellow) ones used have polarities or not. It does look non polarised and it was done by a certified electrician for my brother’s place on 433 switches. Again it is best to consult an electrician in this field of work.
Hey they are 2 different electricians if u go through the videos... one that I engaged refused to do. Another one was at my brother’s place. I also said find someone who knows smart switches...
@@madsncakes Correction here. You dont need an electrician who understands smart switches to be installing this for you. Just get a normal electrcian cos its the basics here. There is no new technology involved in wiring up this switch. So if your electrician doesn't know how todo it, find another!
This video is 10 months ago just wondering as of now has any of your non neutral switches fail on you? Will be starting my reno soon so right now am contemplating neutral or non neutral switches.
Hi, I want to purchase the Xiaomi wireless button, but I have a broadlink hub and google home mini. How do I connect such that the switch can give commands?
Nope... not possible now. But in my video I show u how to dictate sentence to trigger google home to execute commands. To do this the 2 hubs must be near by
@@madsncakes any idea whether samsung smartthings hub can integrate with all the aqara/xiaomi switches well via zigbee? If yes, then we can hook up google/amazon to smartthings for voice commands easily.

Hi MADS, I am thinking to do a smart home for my upcoming bto. Can I check do you recommend aqara wall switches with neutral or no neutral line? Sorry I have no experience in this so would like to ask for your advice if I should engage electrician to install neutral wire for the whole house. Thank you in advance!
hi mads! have one of the best installation videos! i tried adding the aqara non-neutral double rocker in my house. followed your tutorial to a tee, but it seems that when i switch one side, both lights open. would you know any reason why this would be?
@@madsncakes i don’t have a loop like your video. only 3 wires. i tried only using just one of the L1/L2 wires and disconnecting the other from the switch. even with this, either button opens the light. does this mean my unit is defective? or did i cross what is for L and L1/L2?
Hi MADS, do you use the Aqara switches for ceiling fan as well? Non neutral ones... but I think the power rating to drive fan will be much greater than typical lights and if non-neutral ones works by controlling the output by varying resistance... I don’t think it will work / last? Comment?
@@madsncakes I did some reading and found that a typical ceiling fan consumes about 50-60 watts, even the most powerful type limited to below 160-ish watts for a typical home use. So according to Aqara main website, non-neutral version of Aqara switches uses a Resistance type relay that can tolerate up to 16A (Alto the official rating is 10A max), and also up to 800Watts per circuit. In theory, Aqara non-neutral *can be used* for ceiling fan...but that's all in theory...need someone with real life experience to speak up and share... maybe @HGST?
@@madsncakes Wow that's fast! Didn't expecting it so soon :D Ya rating is all the concerns I have, as for other controls I could handle them with an IR blaster so not a problem.
Hi MADS:)! Thanks for the really informative feedback and set up videos:)! Really gave me confidence in trying out these switches in my upcoming house:)! I have a question:)! If I get a three gang to replace a current 2 gang switch, can I leave the "third gang" empty (unwired to any live wire) in order for automation? I.e. 2 lights connected to a three gang and one switch is used to connect to IR blaster to turn on AC:) Hope to get your reply soon so I can configure how many gangs to buy:)! Thank you:)!!!!

Hi I heard that the Awara D1 switches don't work with google home unless you have a UK/US gateway and set server to US/UK. Is that what you have done in your case? Or did your switches simply show up after setting up in mainland china setting in Mihome app and imports into Google home?
Hi I have set it up with aqara home (mainland china), however when I try to add new devices into Google home I could only add from aqara US Or aqara EU and do not see china option. When I added the US aqara in the hub and lights do not seem to be added.... Any idea what's wrong?
@@madsncakes Actually it does. Just figured it out. Here you go; 1) On the Aqara app - set it to US region (any others won't work in MY/SG) - just take note that by doing this you will wipe out all devices that have been setup(prev) in Aqara app. 2) After Step 1 is done, you'll need to re-add all your Aqara devices once again (Painful for those of you who have many devices, but this has to be done!) (within 5-10 seconds you'll get notified by Alexa. She will basically tell you that she's detected Aqara SmartHub. If you hear/read this notification then you're on the right track!) 3) Note: When you keep adding more devices into Aqara app, you'll will continue to get notified by Alexa and her detective skills! 4) Create scenes in Aqara app so that it'll be detected in Alexa app/device. (if you don't create a scene then it basically won't be detected by Alexa) 5) Once all the above is done, just create your own custom groups on Alexa to control multiple lights/switches etc. I have tested this with the D1 (No Neutral, Double Rocker) switches. Just note that when you do change to US region, the 3-gang switches won't appear in the "Accessory" menu of Aqara. Doesn't matter though, just use the "Smart Wall Switch(No Neutral, Double Rocker)" as the solution. It works!
@@madsncakes Well, this isn't entirely true. You can also connect it to Alexa. For this just get the Aqara switches, and the Aqara App. (trust me its just less complicated)

Hi MADS, I'm also trying to figure out how to set up my 2-way smart switch. Is it possible to share how HGST advised you to do it? Thank you so much.
Heard about it
So can I automate xiaomi stuff from 2 regions into 1?
I just tried Apple home. A lot to learn here
Hi MADS, love ur videos. I understand that the smart switch needs a mijia hub to work. I want to replace all the switches in my apartment to smart switch. Will my smart switch still work in a room that is located far away from the hub and not in line of sight?
Yes it will work

hi MADS, was revisiting your past videos on Aqara switches as i intend to replace some of my traditional switches at home. One of them is a 2-way switch which i havent found a solution - it would be great if you could share how did you do it on the Aqara switches.
It’s pretty confusing so I don’t remember the steps. A lot of “diagnosing” to figure out which is lamp and live

I understand that both require a hub..so was wondering xiaomi hub is it the same as aqara hub? Thank you!!!
Hmmm I usually get aqara
I’m still a little confused about two way switch setup. If I do not have neutral wirings, can I still purchase 2 sets of Aqara no neutral switches and get your friend Johnny to reconfigure my wirings to get it working.
Or does this only work with setups with neutral wirings?
Have tried Aqara S1 smart scene panel?

Chanced upon this video, when I was searching for neutral vs non neutral switches for smart home automation. Very informative!
Spoke to a few home automation vendors, and many of them advocate for the need for neutral wiring. I am a bit torn in between, because neutral wiring is going to eat up some part of my home automation budget.
So ever since you made this video till now almost a year, how was the experience of using non neutral switches? Do you have flickering issues? And reliability / connection issue for your non neutral switches?
no issues haha. contact my friend Johnny +65 9010 9695 for automation setup
Look it up Celestine.
hi!! thanks for the useful videos! How do I determine if i should buy one with the neutral or without?
Almost all the switches are non neutral. If u want to route the neutral cable in for all switches then get neutral
Hi also, want to check, for your toilet light that was flickering what is the wattage? Do you have any bulbs with less than 7 W in your set up? I read in the specs technically 3W onwards is supported by the aqara switch... what was your lowest rated bulb?
It’s all 7w
There’s 2 in the bath
Another light that is 15w that’s flickering... not the same type of light as 7w. How do I explain this better...?
You will like aqara :)
this is so detailed thank you so much. just a question (very sorry you may had mention in other video and I may have miss it) you mention that you link to China server, will the time on xiaoai is in China? the automation time is in China also?

Thank you
Usually one app for xiaomi
Or that u buy all devices from the same ecosystem
@@madsncakes why brand would you suggest if for camera, wall switch with no neutral and motion sensors ?
Works well
Just my lifestyle, instead of talking to google or xiao ai.

I don’t have fans... anyone here have experience do share your answers :)

So I have the D1 3-Gang switch from Aqara and the Hub as well.
But i can't seem to detect it on my Alexa app. Whats the reason?
Aqara switches won’t work with Alexa atm
@@madsncakes Actually it does. Just figured it out. Here you go;
1) On the Aqara app - set it to US region (any others won't work in MY/SG) - just take note that by doing this you will wipe out all devices that have been setup(prev) in Aqara app.
2) After Step 1 is done, you'll need to re-add all your Aqara devices once again (Painful for those of you who have many devices, but this has to be done!)
(within 5-10 seconds you'll get notified by Alexa. She will basically tell you that she's detected Aqara SmartHub. If you hear/read this notification then you're on the right track!)
3) Note: When you keep adding more devices into Aqara app, you'll will continue to get notified by Alexa and her detective skills!
4) Create scenes in Aqara app so that it'll be detected in Alexa app/device. (if you don't create a scene then it basically won't be detected by Alexa)
5) Once all the above is done, just create your own custom groups on Alexa to control multiple lights/switches etc.
It works!
