That entire area from north of Hanksville and Cainsville all the way down to Lake Foul is covered in wood.... much of it very colorful and all of it polishes well. My favorite spot is well south of Hanksville and below Mount Hillers and south of Starr Springs Campground heading to Ticaboo along Shootaring Creek. There are colorful mounds of red and purple that are chock full of astounding wood.... some of it quite large.
Fun video. Do you know whether the colorful material would tumble polish? Did you have to stabilize the cabs you made? Where was the most colorful stuff found?
Thanks! The colorful wood would tumble well. I didn't stabilize any of the cabs made from this trip, but the wood is really fractured so it was tough to find pieces good enough to cab. The colorful wood was found about a mile east of hwy 95 on Poison Springs Road (south of Hanksville, GPS for the general area: 38.143706, -110.584732). That whole area has wood scattered throughout so its fun to go and explore!
Will be in the area next week. What other rocks, crystals, minerals are found there? Taking an 84 year old rockhound on his last big trip as he is losing his sight. Suggestions appreciated.
There is a lot of Agate/Jasper found in the area, especially to the south-southwest of Hanksville. Stop in at the Rockin Riddle Rock Shop just to the west of Hanksville and they will point you in the right direction. The lady that runs the shop is very nice and knowledgeable about the area! Have fun!
Thanks! The smaller pieces in the first half of the video were found a few miles north of the Mars Station. The bigger pieces were found in the Poison Springs area south of Hanksville.

I really need to spend more time exploring down that way. Such a neat area!

We love rockhounding around Hanksville but haven't driven out to the Mars Station. We may have to check that out next time!
It's such a fun area and no shortage of scenery down there!
