  • In today's episode, Genevieve dives into the spine tingling world of Victorian Spiritualism. She'll talk about where it all began, what a Victorian materializing seance would entail, the ways mediums would trick people into believing they were talking to dead people, and the history of the Ouija board.

So excited to see a new video from you. I'm really enjoying these! I'm of the opinion that I'm not convinced on ghosts or not, don't want to rule them out. I also talk to my relatives that have passed sometimes, it's comforting.

I haven't written a poem since high school, but your podcast inspired this:
There's something lovely dark and deep about the frogs who came
And munched merrily along as they hopped up and down the lane
But Mary she was long and gone and buried in the rain
The frogs, they came and croaked in shame,
    in harmonizing pain
But Mary was both long and gone
    And buried in the rain

"...known for popping into her spirit cabinet and oozing ectoplasm..." That made me laugh out line. Your dry humor is what makes this podcast. Great job.

I so love your videos. I was so tempted to plunge in and listen to each one the moment it was uploaded, but I waited til I had time to really listen and savour your work. I do believe in spirits, I’ve had quite a few experiences myself and my late mother, a nurse, had hair raising experiences. None bad, though creepy! My Grandmother always said “never be afraid of the dead, it’s the living who can hurt you.” Not so sure about having that level of cool but I’ve only had positive experiences too.
That said, I don’t meddle with the ouija board and I don’t try to contact anyone in seances. I chat to my mum and gran, but I’m happy to wait to hear from them. Edit this includes my first cat! I totally get the dog medium. We know so much less than we think we do.
    Loved this!

I agree completely. I don't ever mess with Ouija boards. I like to be very specific about any spirit I want coming into my room ;) Thank you so much for letting me know you enjoy the podcast!

Great episode. You didn't miss much of Death Tunnel. I"ve watch the whole thing and it was horrible movie. The only thing that I found interesting created by the man behind the movie is the documentary Spooked: The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium. That had some interesting historical information in it.
Overall I found this a highly interesting topic ever since I came across some articles in a spiritual magazine in the Netherland when I was a teenager, and the
ouija board fascinating me. I love seeing them in horror movies.
I can understand your scepticism towards mediums. It hard finding a true medium when there so many people doing cold readings. But there are a few ways to tell if someone is a actually medium.
-The won't ask for money or fame for what they do.
-the open tell you that something they simply can't connect with a spirit, no matter how hard they try. There are spirits that just don't want to chat.
-They'll tell you that they won't be a 100% accurate. Some things are just not for us to know or tell.
-they won't sugarcoat things they get during a session/reading to make you come back. They tell it as it is.
-the want as little information on whoever or whatever they contacting.
So if you every do want to visiting a medium, tarot reader, ect, you know what you might need to look for.

Oo! I might check out that documentary! And honestly, I don't disbelieve all mediums. I certainly believe some folks have "the gift." Plenty of my family members have some very spooky abilities, specifically when it comes to contact with folks within the family, so I'm not a complete sceptic. I'm also too addicted to ghost hunting medium shows to be a total disbeliever ;)

@@myvictoriannightmare haha, you sound a lot like me. I love ghost haunting shows as well. I enjoy most of them.
The list I gave of things to watch for us one I use myself to find a medium I might like to get a reading from. I'm a medium myself for most of my adult life, but sometimes I might have a problem myself, and well I rather not have my own knowledge cloud things, so I go to someone else to get a answer.
Beside Spooked, maybe Children of the Grave might be something your interested in. It's been years since I watched it, but I remember enjoying this doc as well. I'm sure TH-cam has a few trailers on it.

Death Tunnel is awful. It is an insult to horror fans.

I don’t think I could have watched another 5 minutes. Not that I haven’t happily sat through some awful horror movies before, but I can only care about a movie as much as it seems the film makers actually care. This was just trash.

Love this show, and have some topics for you! In no particular order: Harry Houdini vs Spiritualism, Crowley / Hubbard / Parsons, the Hellfire Caves in the UK, Egyptian Mummy unwrapping parties, and spirit photography. Some of these cross into the early 19th century, but have their roots in victorian culture and society, so you might find them interesting even if you don't use them in the show!
