  • Case study 110 - Locked-in syndrome 🔒
Locked-in syndrome (LiS) is a rare and serious neurological disorder that happens when a part of your brainstem is damaged, usually from a stroke. People with LiS have total paralysis but still have consciousness and their normal cognitive abilities. Most people with LiS can communicate with eye movements and lead meaningful lives. Locked in syndrome must be a terrifying state to be in. Similar to being awake under anesthesia.

Thank you Dr! Can you please elaborate on the parameters of the two possible treatments? What harm could come from at least trying the meds or removal?

Such an interesting case and wonderfully informative video!
How common are basilar artery strokes in APS patients? My husband has triple positive APS and we know he has a significant risk of strokes in general, but this is not a possibility I’d ever considered (and it’s pretty terrifying). He’s 38 and has already had 2 PEs, a STEMI, splenic infarcts, and a handful of peripheral clots in his extremities in the 5 years since dx. All but the PEs were while on various anticoagulant therapies. He also had a bout of transient global amnesia while recovering from the STEMI, so it was suspected he had some tiny clots in his brain. So yeah…this has me a bit spooked!

Man I wanna learn Neurosurgery in the US but I hear neurosurgery is damn near impossible to get for IMGs. Any tips on how I can improve my chances Dr Grunch?
