  • Mike Gurr reviews the Toyota Yaris subcompact hatch. The Yaris uses a 1.6L 4-cylinder and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota Yaris is a favourite of people who need basic transportation in a practical hatchback design. The Yaris has a simple interior and seating for 5-passengers but it is best for 4-people.

I'm a tall driver and I feel better with the seat lowered and set back, and because of that my sitting position is also a little lower so I also have good headroom. I agree the steering wheel lacking a telescopic feature is a problem for tall drivers and I was able to get in a good enough comfortable position by not letting the seat be leaned back too far, but it would be easier and I could have more driving positions if it had that feature, though then my view could be getting kind of low. I also have a longer arm span than most people even for my height so the lack of telescopic steering wheel might be even more of a problem for other tall drivers than myself. I find the seats comfortable for myself though. I guess I prefer firm seats but that varies from person.

I love this car. I compared it to the FIT and it was no contest. Had more features and better looks for the same money. And it is dirt cheap at about 15000 CDN pesos. To get a Toyota packed with technology like lane departure, and automatic high beams, etc., is amazing. It comes standard with technology that was on only German luxury cars just 10 years ago.
I am 50 and have never owned a car with tilt or telescopic steering nor would I ever expect one in an entry level city car. Never had a problem.

As someone who is 6'3 and owned a 2007 yaris. I loved it. Only issue was the acceleration onto the highway wasn't so great. I had 0 problems with it. Did the oil, brakes, spark plugs once and a couple batteries. Ran the think to 380,000km only had to get ride of it cause I moved to Alberta from Ontario and for it to be allowed to be registered in Alberta I needed about, $3,000 of work done on it (abs break replacement and a new muffler, old one was rusting out). So I bought the sonata. Huge mistake

We will have to make do with the SE until Akio sends the "Gazoo Racing" supercharged Yaris our way. This car desperately needs the manual to up the fun factor while simultaneously dropping the price. It also comes in a very chic two tone paint scheme which is appropriate for a car made in France. One odd thing about this car is the tire size with the SE - 195/50R16 as you won't have a lot of options when replacement rubber is due. Lastly, the world is waiting to see if the next Yaris will be built on the TNGA platform with IRS. That would be a whole new ball game.

I know that the cable cluth has a more black and white engament with barley any grey zone for engament, but it's more reliable and long lasting for the clutch!!

Four months late I know, but Yaris (Hatch) sales in the US are abysmal, only selling about 10% as well as a few years before.
Canada sales are also horrible, but not as bad.
Many people aren't choosing the Yaris Hatch due to the Yaris IA and Prius C, both are better built, faster and in some cases, more reliable.
Not saying the Yaris Hatch is bad by any means, but it's overpriced and frankly outdated, there's no reason to not go for the IA or C, as price will be comparable.
(Not to mention Honda Fit, Mazda 2 hatch, Rio, Accent and others, which also beat the Yaris in literally every category, even reliability, and are about $1,000 cheaper)

  • @davidjym

      S. D. H. I respect Toyota reliability. The versatility of the Fit rear cargo area, especially the way the rear seats can be folded, is a major plus for me (was able to store my mountain bike in there by removing the front wheel, for example). I’m not personally a fan of CR reliability ratings, although in the general sense, they show an overall performance for various manufacturers. Glad you are enjoying your Yaris. Probably the only SUB COMPACT with proven 4 speed automatic. Beat that GM. The reviewer needs to change his driving style and opinion. This 4 speed is older than you lol. "this transmission is poorly suited to this application" sure Mr expert. All automatics can hunt gears if you don't change your driving style (Allison, GM 6 speed auto hydramatics, GM 10 speed auto, GM 4 speed auto). Maybe you should review sports cars with that "manly" stick shift. It will not constantly hunt gears unless you're a BAD driver.

Not in gas milleage. Mazda2 was fast for a subcompact but 28 mpg combined? Fuck that, Id might as well drive a mid size sedan. The CVT has gotten a bad rap from idiotic Nissan owners who never changed their cvt fluid or filters. Mitsubishi and Suzuki both use JATCO CVT7 and have way less documented evidence of premature CVT failure, worldwide. CVTs are reliable if programmed correctly, paired with a low torque & low curb weight vehicle, and properly serviced every 30k miles. Regular autos were more reliable im the sense you never had to do anything to them and they could be rebuilt, but they just ate up too much gas my nigga.

Arcticarc1 better is a very subjective word. I think this Yaris is one of the most reliable car in its segment.. and for some people, this is the only criteria when it's time to buy a new cheap car.
