    Have you ever wondered how that OCD cycle begins and what you can do to stop it or break the cycle? In this video, I review the OCD cycle and how using ERP, exposure and response prevention can break the cycle.
    Although anyone can experience thoughts or images that pop into their head, but having OCD causes you to have “sticky” thoughts, and you tend to give significance or meaning to your thoughts in a way that makes them become obsessive. And because these thoughts make you uncomfortable, fearful, anxious, and even disgusted, you begin to do certain behaviors to try to calm yourself. These behaviors can then become compulsions and reinforce your OCD cycle.
    By repeating the process of ERP, (Exposure and Response Prevention) and doing a variety of exposures and extending the time and practice of Response Prevention, you will have created new neuropathways incorporating safety learning, increased your tolerance for discomfort and anxiety and broken your OCD Cycle.

    I have had a "pure O" affliction for my entire life. People would just call me a "worrier" and tell me not to worry so much. I thought I was just mentally "problem solving" and it was exhausting. Wish I had understood a long time ago that my mental behaviors were due to OCD. It has been very helpful to become aware that there are ways to overcome this.

    What a marvelous and immensely helpful analysis of the beast we call "OCD." What's interesting to me is that the analysis very closely resembles my own personal experience with this roller coaster ride of an affliction. It is indeed a comfort and an added support to hear it broken down so expertly and skillfully. Wow! Thank you Paige for this fantastic talk.

    I would first like to thank you Paige. Your OCD videos helped me more than any other OCD videos on youtube. God Bless you for your help. I did ERP for 2 months after watching all of your OCD videos, and I have improved my OCD by 80%. (My OCD is intrusive thoughts that go against my religious beliefs that causes me fear, guilt, and annoyance).
    So although my life is more manageable, I have now noticed that my OCD has morphed into something new…so while I apply your “I.A.M” method, my OCD doesn’t allow me to move on from the thought that pops up. I’m very good at Identifying, accepting and not resolving it, BUT, it’s very hard for me to move on from it, and my OCD has noticed.
    It tells me that “If I don’t solve this issue, I can never enjoy the things I love in life.”
    So I’m stuck in a loop of Identify, Accept….but not move on. I’m stuck in the I.A…but the move on part is so hard.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand and am so glad that you are asking this question. The “move on” of the I. A.M. method has to be self directed. What I mean by that is that you identify something that you can “do” in the moment and shift your focus to that. Let’s say shift your focus to playing an instrument or cooking or singing or washing the dishes….you practice really focusing on doing something. You may still be anxious and your thought may float there. Keep repeating the process when the intrusive thought shows up and keep redirecting your attention.
      A completely different approach can also be used and that is a more direct and planned ERP exposure approach. You can do direct exposures on your intrusive thoughts by having them on purpose many times throughout the day. You can put a timer on your watch and every 20-30 minutes have an alarm go off that reminds you to think of your intrusive thought. You can also listen to scripts or exposure yourself to environments and objects and people that trigger your fear. I teach 4 different types of exposures in my course on ERP for Pure O and OCD. I encourage people to mix and match all 4 methods to keep their brain learning that you are safe. If you ever need more help, you can find out more here: www.paigepradko.com/ocd

    • @RE_Prince_Vegeta
      @RE_Prince_Vegeta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaigePradkoTherapy ahhh, so that’s the mistake I was making!! I would do the “move on” by changing my thought to something else in the moment, rather than really focusing on something at the moment (for example, if I’m playing video games and the thought kicks in,
      after Identify and Accept, I should focus all my energy on getting back to enjoying the video game 😄)
      Move on part will still be hard since I’m so used to constantly trying to resolve it before moving on, but this is teaching me that as difficult as it may seem, and as scary as it may seem to not analyze, it’s time to let go 😄

      @@PaigePradkoTherapy Hello Paige! I forgot to ask, is it normal to feel weird and uncomfortable when you first begin to accept intrusive thoughts instead of trying to solve them?
      I can already tell it’s rebuilding my brain and I feel less bothered, and I’m finally feeling some relaxation by not trying to find a logical solution to every thought, but, I will admit even though I feel better, I still feel anxious and weird/ uncomfortable bc I’ve been so used to rejecting this thought and trying to solve it, and now I just accept it and move on.
      Is it normal to feel like that when you first begin accepting thoughts?

    Thank you so much for this video Dr. Paige! I have contamination OCD, and recently my mind has been telling me my bed is dirty even though its entirely clean. There is no reason for it be dirty, nothing happened, usually it doesn't bother me if its not actually contaminated, but I can't seem to get rid of the thought no matter how much I don't react to it. Its stuck in my head to the point I've been led to kind of believe it. For example, every time I think of my bed, I am reminded its contaminated automatically. And then I remember that its not actually contaminated, but the thought still stays and has been stuck for quite some time now. What can I do about this? Accepting, ignoring, not reacting or using other strategies doesn't seem to be working.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jayson. First, I am sorry that you are experiencing this. It is difficult and it is not your fault. Sometimes if a thought is especially sticky like this, it is still associated with your anxiety response in your brain. The neuro network for bedsheets, contamination and your anxiety response are wired together and associated in your brain. Response prevention and not responding to those thoughts with any kind of mental or physical behavior is important, but if a thought is especially sticky, more in depth ERP is required. I am not sure if you are aware, but this week, I have released my new course for OCD. I cover exactly what to do for contamination OCD. I cover 4 different ERP techniques. In my opinion, you need to do more in depth ERP before you can move to a response prevention approach. We have to get you unstuck from that thought. Should you be interested, I am offering a $100 savings on the course until this Friday 4/8. Here is a link should you be interested in more help: www.paigepradko.com/ocd

      Hi Kristiyan. Your question is fantastic! I encourage 4 different types of ERP in my OCD course, because using a variety of exposures and techniques keeps your brain surprised and learning. But, my favorite method are incidental, in the moment ERP, every time you are triggered. You want to always practice response prevention and have a plan when you are triggered. Have you watched any of my videos where I teach the I. A.M. method? It is an incidental exposure technique. @@PaigePradkoTherapy Thank you very much for the reply, Paige. This is very freeing and resonates a lot with my experience. Incidental exposures are the best and more sustainable method and give us a long term attitude towards triggers. Although planned exposures have their place in ocd treatment, for me personally all the planning and assessing the generated discomfort, creating a specific program, choosing a specific fear are more of an over-complication than a sustainable plan. However I will check the video and the other 3 types of exposures. Thanks a lot again for your content !

It sounds like when you stop doing the compulsion, you no longer get this urge or message from your brain to do the compulsion. Is that correct? If so, this is exactly what we want to accomplish in ERP. Your brain has learned that you do not need the compulsion after all.

    Paige, I'm undertaking post graduate cbt training. In a treatment session, I've found that there isn't enough time for anxiety to reduce within the time we have. The OCD being addressed is 'just right' ocd such as feeling a need to look back at a number 7 the second time in the exact same way, then needing to do it again and again until it feels right but always until it feel right after an even number of times. What needs to be done in the session to demonstrate to the client that this process can be effective, so they are more willing to practice between sessions?

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary. So glad that you are learning more about CBT. Practicing ERP has changed over the years as new theories and research is explored. In this video I talk about SUDS and waiting for anxiety to go down. I documented in the description and in more recent videos that I now practice ERP using Inhibitory Learning Theory. We have learned that we no longer have to rate anxiety, use a hierarchy or wait for anxiety to come down. The main thing we want to focus on is triggering the client’s core fear in the exposure and not doing any compulsions or avoidance. This experience creates new safety learning (neuropathways) in the brain that eventually overrides the old fear network. They learn also that they can tolerate the anxiety of in your client’s case…feeling “not” just right. Your exposures in the office is to just have them expose themselves to whatever makes them feel…”not” just right. Do not worry about the level of anxiety. Here is a video that explains more about Inhibitory Learning Theory th-cam.com/video/0xpDmuIe53E/w-d-xo.html.

      Hi. I wish I could help, but unfortunately, you will have to make this decision. Working on your OCD with ERP does take time and a commitment as well. And yes, compulsions also take up your valuable time. Possibly it is best to wait until your final exams are completed and then dedicate time to learning and practicing ERP. If you need help, I offer a course for ERP for OCD and Pure O. www.paigepradko.com/ocd
      I wish you the best on your exams.

      Hi Jyothsna. First, I hope that you know that you are not alone. Guilt and shame go hand in hand with OCD. Guilt and shame seem to fuel OCD. This is perhaps why people with OCD are the kindest people on the planet…they actually care very much about how they affect others. And they care possibly too much about something they have no control over and that is their thoughts. You also mentioned disgust. People that experience disgust instead of anxiety or fear or general discomfort typically require longer term treatment. I talk about this in more detail in my OCD course. The experience of disgust involves more areas of the brain than fear/anxiety. ERP is recommended but treatment gains are slower and treatment therefore takes longer.

    Hello how can I remove this ocd my ocd it is kind of hard to explain but my ocd is like I have to think of good thoughts while doing something and it’s really annoying I tried erp before and it helps kind of but after a while I start doing compulsions again I also have the pure o ocd too.

      Hi. Yes, what you are describing is a mental compulsion that is called, “neutralizing with good thoughts”. There are several different kinds of ERP that you can do for this. Try your best to not do the compulsion or to interrupt the behavior when you become aware that you are doing it. You can do exposures on the types of situations that trigger the compulsion and then resist the compulsion or you could use an incidental ERP technique like my I. A.M. method. th-cam.com/video/9nEC8yIgFKg/w-d-xo.html. If you need more help with ERP, I have a course that can help called, Free From Pure O &OCD. Here: www.paigepradko.com/ocd

    Hello Paige! Do you have a course to overcome agoraphobia?

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Some people with agoraphobia may enroll in my OCD course to learn ERP. However, I will be developing a unique course, exposure coaching and support group for people with agoraphobia later this year. You can go to www.paigepradko.com and sign up for my newsletter if you would like to be notified when that is available later this year. 😊
