My g g grandfather, Samuel M. Payne did his basic training at Camp Nelson. Private Co. E 8th TN. Cav. He was from Sneedville, TN.
I grew up in Nicholasville and never knew anything about camp nelson. This is absolutely fascinating and makes me very proud to hear this site was made a natl monument...and deservedly so. Will definitely visit next trip back home.
