  • My dad has been hit by lightning twice! This is an interview with him about those incidents. Plus we chatted about the science behind a lightning strike, which it's so dangerous, and how to avoid getting hit.

I had a similar experience. Thanks to basic physics knowledge, I pulled my sister and cousins out of a lake, when they were amazed by the fact that their hair was rising up. We just had time to run about 200m from the shore when a lighting stroke an old tree trunk near where we were swimming. I was 16, now I am 37 and since then I became a physicist and I always say to people that physics may save your life... specially in a thunderstorm ;)

Thank you .. this is an excellent observation. I'm wondering why it didn't come up in the vlog. Surely the tingling is electricity in the water, being felt by their bodies. Maybe it's a linguistic thing, as in, he was not 'hit' by lightning.

Your Dads story about being in the garage the second time he was struck reminded me of what we used to do as kids. I grew up in Denver Colorado and short 15 to 30 minute thunderstorms occur there in the middle of the day, multiple times a week in spring. We would go into the garage and open the garage door and set up lawn chairs in the garage to watch and listen to the storm. I guess we were lucky there were no trees near by.

I experienced lightning, a near miss!
I was inside home (concrete roof, brick walls) , using an XPS laptop which was having metal sheet on the palm rest area. Laptop was connected to internet over LAN cable. It was a wired connection. lightning occurred outside building and i get shock from laptop and was pulled away luckily & fell down along with chair backwards. I was frightened and cried 😞
Lucky nothing happened to me other than just falling down. But mother board of laptop- LAN section and USB ports got damaged.

I share the experience with the power socket, though I can not say it was accidental. I just learned power is AC with a 50/60Hz Frequency and knew this is a bass frequency you could hear, so I plugged in a headset with crocodile clamps from an electronic experimenting kit from my older brother. I obviously survived that, too.
The closest I got to lightning was once in an office, where a bolt hit the earth wire of the building and a wall clock stopped. The loudest thunder I ever heard most probably accompanied by the bang of the short circuit within this clock. The funny thing about it was months later I was in that office again someone asked for the time. Not knowing (it wasn't my office) the clock wasn't repaired I pointed to it. It was mere coincidence it was quite accurately showing the correct time, though the clock still stood still.

Nice to hear from you again Diana! What are the probabilities of staying alive after getting hit by a lightning? I mean what is more probable, die or survive?

Great lighting safety. But as an old surfer, I have never seen lighting near a surf zone. (Nor Cal). Open ocean in the
Bahamas on a scuba dive is a spooky experience.

What should you do in a lightning storm?

When lightning strikes near you, the differential voltage in the ground is enough to shock you... so if you are near some sort of lighting rod (tree, whatever) facing away from it helps, because if both feet are equidistant from the source, you'll experience less jolt.
    (And facing away because bright.)

There was a televised soccer match where the pitch was struck by lightning, several player collapsed badly hurt while other were fine. And it didn't seem to matter how far away the players were from where the bolt hit the ground. There were players that were closer to that point than players that were hurt.
They found the difference by looking at slow motion pictures. All the players that were hurt had both feet on the ground when the lightning hit. None of the players who had only one foot on the ground were hurt.

Another tip for lightning storms. Don't stand near a campfire. The smoke has lots of ions which makes it act like a lightning rod.
Also cows allegedly tend to align themselves facing 90 degrees away from lightning storms because if the current travels along the ground there is less potential difference between their legs than if they are facing towards or away from the lightning. (Left and right legs are closer together than front and back)

Now I never got struck by lightning but I believe I was close enough to. I was outside watching the rain when lightning struck the fire hydrant 50+ feet away. I still felt my hair stand up by static, and it was so bright it took a moment for my eyes to adjust.
