'The Goodies' were popular in Australia and were repeated into the 1980s. I would watch them after school and the show helped me thru a difficult time, so I am always grateful to The Goodies. 100%. I Grew up in rural Australia and could only get two TV channels. Thank God one was the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), which showed The Goodies and Dr Who. Our family watched both religiously in the 1970s, as did every other family I knew. I recall going to school one day and it seemed like half the students were reenacting the “I’m 106 today”bit …there were kids flopping to the ground all over the place. I was born in '70 so the Goodies were a must-watch for me and my family. Although I don't remember any specific episodes, I just remember them as being hilarious, but quite heart-warming and endearing at the same time. There was never any malice in their comedy. It was all just good (pun intended) clean SILLINESS. Giant cats climbing the Post Office Tower? Excellent!
Back then I used to watch BBC 2 avidly. It was just rammed full of wonderful comedies of all types. In the late 90's they had the "comedy zone" on Friday nights. THREE half hour comedy shows back to back including The Fast Show (fabulous!). Then something changed in the BBC and it all went downhill. I don't watch TV at all now let alone BBC.
It's great that someone from the USA as you obviously are, are interested in parochial British comedy shows. Well done!

I now know everything about the Goodies except why it was cancelled - other than they wanted to move on which was explained in the narrative not by the cast and wasn't even accurate.
I found this with a simple Google search.
... after one half-hour Christmas special ("Snow White 2") in 1981, and a six-part series in early 1982, the series was cancelled. In later interviews the cast suggest the reasons were mainly economic, and that a typical Goodies sketch was more expensive than it appeared.

The decision to move the broadcast time to 9pm led to a notable phenomenon - the weekly "Battle of the Goodies" between the kids, who wanted to stay up to watch it, and their parents who wanted them to go to bed. The kids nearly always won, but it was often a pyrrhic victory. Everyone of my generation remembers sitting down to the Goodies at nine o'clock, exhausted after hours of arguing.

The Goodies thrived on the in house capabilities of BBC television in the 1970s. The Three Goodies wrote and starred in the show but also had a hand in the production which stretched and challenged the visual effects people and costume designers. All the various BBC departments would sit around the table with the script and let their creative abilities soar. For example, when the script asked for flat caps in the episode bun fight at the ok tea rooms, the costume department would make the hat the largest possible. At the end of the run, they moved to LWT which did not have in house facilities and more things had to be outsourced which meant individual jokes had to be costed. So, one year into a three year contract with LWT, the show was cancelled over the cost to make it. In addition, the BBC did not repeat the series possibly as they moved to LWT. The Goodies should have received more UK repeats in line with other comedies from the 1970s. On Dec 23 1973, the very last ISIRTA was aired on BBC radio and on Dec 24 1973 the Xmas special Goodies and the Beanstalk first aired. I doubt either will be marked by the BBC. A wonderful series, well loved by many.

    • @martinodoni8943
      @martinodoni8943 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the reason The Goodies rarely got repeated on BBC is because, by the mid-80s, there was a growing recognition (whether we agree with it or not) that some of the material in it was simply unacceptable.
For instance, there were various episodes that saw The Goodies dressed up in blackface make-up, or as stereotype 'mad Highlanders,' like 'South Africa' and 'Kung-Fu Capers.' It's clear from reports that these had people at the Corporation cringing, an effect that got even more pronounced by the late-1990s. There is also an unmistakable tone of homophobia in some episodes e.g. when Tim was dressed up in drag and Graeme suggested that it meant he was 'sick' and 'twisted'. Not recognised as a problem at the time of production, but increasingly understood as being cheap and cruel by later generations.

I'm sure most of the content went over our heads, but I remember the simple fun and silly comedy that filled the show. At 58yo now I STILL watch The Goodies regularly. Other classic UK comedy shows such as Monty Python, Please Sir, Mind your Language, Love Thy Neighbour, On The Buses, The Dave Allen Show, Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Black Books, I.T. The reason The Goodies was cancelled had nothing to do with them "simply wanting to move on". In 1980, they were informed by the BBC that it would not be allocating a budget for their 1981 series since the latter wanted to spend the money instead on a new comedy series they had planned - 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy'. If the new show wasn't a success, they were told, a budget would be greenlit for a 1982 series of The Goodies. Naturally, they weren't very impressed with this arrangement, so they took the show to ITV, the main commercial network in the UK, and were snapped up by regional ITV affiliate London Weekend Television, which committed to a three-year contract. Under LWT, they made a Christmas special for 1981 and a full series for 1982.
However, LWT quickly realised how expensive The Goodies was to make (ITV didn't have the huge, in-house resources of the BBC required to make such a visually-complex show) and so informed the trio that they wouldn't produce the other two series they'd agreed upon, although Tim, Bill, and Graeme would still be paid in full as per the contract. This meant, however, that until the contract expired in 1985, they also couldn't take the show to anyone else.
When it did finally expire, they tried going back to the BBC, who, still unhappy at their 'defection' several years earlier, refused - also regarding them as yesterday's news. Consequently, there simply wasn't anyone left willing to make the show. So they moved on to other things, like Bananaman in 1985. However, they had always produced other stuff alongside The Goodies - I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, for example, had already been going since 1972. It was the BBC and others who wanted to move on from them, not vice-versa.

"Monty Python for kids" was one of the descriptions used back in the day. I especially loved the way continuity was completely disregarded at times; for example some episodes would see all thee main characters killed off only to have them pop up again next week alive and well.

I literally wet myself once from laughing during the episode when Tim Brooke-Taylor became emperor of Rome. when they were escaping from Rome burning, they jumped on the back of a 2-wheel horse cart, with very long poles between the horse and the cart. When the horse was thrown into the air by them jumping on the back of the cart was when I pissed myself.

Australia grew up in the 70s and 80s with reruns of the Goodies Dr Who (Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee)Kenny Everette video show etc. usually around 5-6.30 pm on the ABC. We didn't have the rerun embargo that Uk had so were on a lot. If you notice early eps were very similar to Monty Python as Tim was involved with the writing. Once it became only Oddie and Garden scripts it became a lot less funny. On the commentary on the DVD it is mentioned that BBC did cancel the next lot of eps and so ITV offered them to air on their station but not to use any ideas or scripts from BBC due to copywrite. The ITV shows are poor and boring. Clearly run out of ideas.

  •  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

The Goodies was not reshown in the UK, it was in Australia and some other countries, but not at home. The Goodies was deliberately not reshown by the BBC, as the BBC was unhappy that they "defected" to ITV, and made a version of "The Goodies" on a rival channel. it has recently been shown on "That's TV" channel after decades off the air. Not sure where they got the idea it was shown in "syndication", as the UK TV Industry does not work like that.

Another thing that all 3 members have said is that the contract they signed with Thames TV (who made the ITV series) meant that Thames got all the rights to the Goodies name to the extent that The BBC couldn't show their episodes and Graham, Bill and Tim couldn't even say they were members of The Goodies.

    • @clivesarney2939

And yet there are several other acts that 'defected' to ITV from the BBC who are still revered and still admired today. The obvious one is Morecambe and Wise, who originally played on ITV, then defected to the BBC as they promised to make their shows in colour (pity they destroyed some of them), and then in the early 1980's they went back to ITV (reasons unknown) After a couple of seasons, Eric suffered a tragic fatal heart attack. But, the BBC still cosiders M&W THEIR property and regularly screen repeats, particularly over the Christmas period. Its still a mystery as to why the BBC have come down so hard on 'Goodies' repeats, and I believe not screened any since reluctantly since a handful of shows for the 40th anniversary. Time for some more I think - they are still as funny now as they were 50 years ago (although a little dated in places). NB other acts who 'defected' include Frankie Howard, Benny Hill, John Cleese/Graham Chapman (to write the 'Doctor' series), and Tony Hancock (another one that the BBC see as 'theirs'). Probably lots of others, but I'm still intrigued as to why they are so down on 'The Goodies'.

Tim Brooke-Taylor said in an interview wit Parkinson that he had no idea why the show was cancelled and it came as an unwelcome shock to the three creators as its ratings continued to be good. I suspect that when they switched from BBC to ITV the powers that be did not see the ratings they were expecting and canned the show after a single season.

One thing they didnt mention is that the filming was very expensive. The BBC were planning The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy and couldn't fund both shows, so the Goodies went to ITV. ITV cancelled them after one season, but their contract stopped them returning to BBC for about 5 years, so they petered out.

I was born in 72. so only vaguely recall the Goodies from the first time around, certain episodes shine out in memory though, but I can't be certain the memory is from the orignal airing or a rerun I saw sometime in the 80's or a combination of both.
I have entertained friends whose english wasn't great by putting on a Goodies episode ('Kung Fu capers' as I recall), their humour breaks the language barrier as a lot of it is physical, entire episodes can be carried with little to no dialog understanding whatsoever.

This explanation for the cancellation is quite untrue.
The real reason the show was cancelled was that in 1981, the BBC had decided that it had carried on too long, which is a fair conclusion after 11 years. Its main appeal back in 1970 had been how non-establishment it was, but by 1981, with its growing age and familiarity, it had become an establishment show itself, meaning it had lost its central dynamic with the regular audience.
As a secondary reason, the BBC also needed to make extra budget available for the very expensive television adaptation of The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Because of the technical complexity of The Goodies, it was a money-hungry show to make, so that meant cancelling it would open up quite a bit of cash for Hitch Hiker. So the BBC pulled the plug.
The Goodies therefore accepted an offer to move to London Weekend Television, broadcasting on the ITV network, and signed an initial contract to make three seasons, with the first made and broadcast in 1982.
The problem was that LWT was a tiny production company compared to the BBC, with only a fraction of the resources, and the controllers at LWT hadn't realised just how expensive the average episode of The Goodies was to make. So during the making of the first season, LWT soon found itself in financial bother, with The Goodies' production costs seen as a primary reason, and so they put the second season on hold. Realising that LWT could never realistically afford to bring the show back, the controllers simply never took it off hold afterwards.
With the contract still in place with LWT for another two seasons, and it being way too expensive to buy the contract out, it was legally impossible for The Goodies to make any more shows under that banner or format with anyone else, and so that was effectively the end of the road. (As far as I know, the contract is STILL in place even today with LWT's current owner, Granada Television.)
The idea that The Goodies were splitting up to do other things is nonsense; just a year after the LWT season, the same trio were working together to provide the voices on the very silly but amusing 'Bananaman' cartoons on BBC.

Ah… the goodies “any time, anywhere “. Was their motto. I was fortunate enough to see dear Bill when he did a Goodies tour of Australia quite a few years back. It was great seeing him in person. There were people who dressed up in costumes. And people who were holding large imitation sausages (ecky thump sketch)
The Goodies was a massive hit in Australia and it developed a cult culture of its own with people using sayings from the shows etc. oh.. and Bill did say, that they never got along with the bicycle. He said they always kept falling off and cutting their legs all the time. He said trying all of us to stay on it at once was an almost impossible task. If you look at the clip, you’ll notice that bill has his legs way out away from the pedals . That’s the reason ! Cheers Colin 🇦🇺
