Oh my gosh 🙈 That was so stressful to watch! I can’t believe it’s only day 1 and you already ran out of power twice, got stopped by the police and had to push the van for an hour. Classic funforlouis adventure! So glad I’m not on this one hahaha
Louis- if you want any chance at succeeding at this, you need to use “A Better Route Planner” and “Plugshare”. ABRP will help you plan your route, considering factors like hills affecting your range. Since you do not have a production vehicle, you will need to select the closest you can find in terms of battery pack size- probably a Nissan leaf or similar. You should update your Wh/km (efficiency) to what your vehicle gets on level ground. You will also want to update your chargers supported to just level 2. PlugShare will help you find non-network chargers and plugs you can use to charge from. Good luck, you’re going to need it!
I think Plugshare also lists private parties who share there EVSE with other drivers. With this he can contact people when he is running low and perhaps make it to one of those stations. There will be long stretches in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and likely more where no charging is available. It may be possible from Triple AAA or dedicated companies to get charging provided at the roadside to make it to the next charging station.
I second this! ABRP is great at calculating trips and where you'll need to charge. I use it all the time to calculate for my older Tesla that's not on "Tesla's" route planner.
You are really a legend. Where others would simply quit you have so much positivity and believe that you keep up trying. What a role model. You can make it. You will make it. :) Good luck 🍀
This has got to be the most nerve wrecking video i've seen in awhile... and also one of the most fabulous ones! All the best! Absolutely love and admire your sense of adventure
Reminds me of the days you use to volg daily and travel the world and meet new people and bring us along for the interaction/journey. Can not wait for the next video louis. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
Lol...this boy loves an adventure and a challenge! We had a camper like that, but we would never have driven across the country in the middle of winter, even with a gas engine! Have fun Louie!
Rather than the fan heater- heating the whole inside of the van - you might want to try a heated blanket/ throw rug. This will warm you directly and use less of your precious charge.
I had exact the same bus, drove it around Europe. The brakes where perfect. Never had engine problems. In months the only problem I encountered was a faulty indicator relais. This busses can be bulletproof
This is a great cautionary tale about why ccs fast charging, or even chademo, is almost required for a usable diy EV conversion.....props for you to attempt it man
Oh no! Really feeling for you, we were complaining about the lack of chargers in Wallonia (Belgium) today as we're on our way to the south of France in our electric campervan, but we have actually got it so easy here in Europe in comparison! Best of luck tomorrow and we hope you get lots of battery back on the downhill once those hills are finally behind you. We got about one third back driving down the mountains again in Norway this past summer! (and we made sure to never charge to 100% on the top or we wouldn't have regenerative braking on the downhills). All the best and love that you're attempting to daily vlog this trip!
I was equally stressed and humoured watching this video. Cali is a great travel companion! I can imagine Raya is breathing a sigh of relief that she is sitting this one out at a cozy home in NY! I am looking forward to following your adventure Louis.
This is only the first day of the rest of the trip. I think this will teach Louis a lot about his VW Bus! And he will eventually figure out what works best and what doesn't, and finds the better routes to take. This is what an adventure is about!
Get a neutral ground bounding plug for your battery pack that way the charger will think the battery pack is grounded that way you can charge with your battery pack
I hope this means you’re taking a trip to Ashland, Wisconsin!! Stunning, wonderful place to visit that more people to should go to. Don’t miss the Apostle Islands.
Hi Louis are you doing well? I'm worried but hopefully you both are Ok🙂🤞 Please if you can stop at a Walmart please buy a coat for Kelly, 🙏🐶 it is getting colder, and as you Advance she will need one to walk outside because she has not the fur for low temperatures. Wishing you the best 😊!! 🌻🌼💗😊
Absolutely gripping, thanks Louis. I started watching your vids because of the Rickshaw Run and think we're back to the Golden Days! Love these! And really pleased new rules are in play, like only using electricity from vending machines. Leccy Spongers Unite!
get a diesel heater, they are quite efficient and although you'd prefer to steer away from fossil fuels, they will save the kw+ drain on your battery and keep you nice and toasty. a few gallons of red diesel will last a while.
Hey Louis.....fellow Brit here in Las Vegas. I'm just off of the 15 freeway right in the middle of town and I have a safe place to park, spend the night and recharge the van......unless you're a few days ahead (and have passed through already) Love what you're doing.......boy are you ambitious...!! I've had many VW buses...and I know exactly how it feels pushing them backwards like that. Let me know if I can help mate. Cheers, Paul
"good quality food" .... we call that store whole paycheck. check out trader joes, most of the same foods but not with the expensive manufacturer name on them.
What speed are you trying to maintain up any incline? Looks like your trying to keep to a speed that is seriously drawing massive amounts of current. You should slow down on any uphill sections especially if your below 30% SOC
Never followed when u were daily. New to the space here but omg this journey is crack. Thanks for the journey mate love from Mexico- shauninparadise ❤😂😅
11:10 your anxiety reminds me of mine in my leaf! HAHA! I should video some of those fresh raw moments because as technology changes hopefully there will be more chargers available!!
When you pulled away and 6% showed on screen XD I thought, ooo noo haha. Wonder if those battery cells drain like mobiles in the colder temperatures as well. Best of luck, looking forward to the next episodes :D
Now you can see why I always say that the existing battery technology can't replace petrol. We need different and much better batteries which can store much more power and be able to be charged much faster. I'm sure one day this will happen and we will ditch gasoline engine for good.
I think your van is great Louis but the infrastructure just isn’t there to make electric properly viable unless you have the range of a Tesla. Also it takes much longer to charge an EV in the USA to what it does in the UK as we have twice the voltage. Also range anxiety would get the better of me i think. Good luck.
it does work but you have to give the powerpack a false ground, make a plug that connects the N tot ground and the machin will think its grounded properly. I use this as a last resort backup in my car (smart fortwo ED) with a ecoflow mini and a 220v 6a charger (very very slow) but gives me 10km of range extra to find a charging station or get off the road.
I love the blind optimism but Junk that battery pack for now and get an ICE generator and 2 gallon of gas otherwise your going to get stuck again and again with no route to a charger. You already junked solar so what gives.
How anxious to see the charge reach zero! The difficulty of having charging stations available when needed is the major limitation of electric mobility.
You should see his 'build' videos. He takes a van with faulty brakes onto a public highway then acts bewildered when they catch fire. He's got real Homer vs Frank Grimes energy.
PUMPED for this series! What an adventure! I was very stressed at certain times throughout this video but also laughed a lot 😂😂😂 you rock!
Thanks so much! It’s not a classic Louis adventure if I don’t push things a little too far 😂

😅 yo senti lo mismo.. mucho estrés, creo que sufrí más que el 😂. Pero nos encanta como a persas de todo los malo termina el día feliz 😊
Lmaooo

Lol’d my heart is beating so fast …he just ran out of batteries! 😂
Just like ole times… 😂

Getting a neutral -ground bonding plug might solve the problem. I don't know fully but that might have keep the portable solar generator from working.
@@craigchatterton4164 Did not know that. I wonder what prevents it from getting the software update. The older chip maybe?
this feels like vintage Funforlouis vlogs! love taking this journey with you and please be careful lol
Exactly!! I have missed these kinds of vlogs so much!
Louis honestly is one of those very few youtubers, who always deliver top notch quality and that over a decade nearly. Imagine that!
@@DapFrIeNd. same here!!
Time to put on "Driving Home for Christmas" with Chris Rea (A great UK guy) ✨🎄🎄🎄🎄✨
definitely
My husband and dad told me about you and I had to check it out! Love this! Cute doggy!
You are really a legend. Where others would simply quit you have so much positivity and believe that you keep up trying. What a role model. You can make it. You will make it. :) Good luck 🍀
Aw thank you so much! ✌🏼☺️
For real, that was crazy man. Only you would find enjoyment in that much struggle.

Damn, that was tense! Great job with the filming and editing. This is definitely an adventure. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks man! ✌🏼
What a great idea, this is incredibly exciting. I admire your courage and wish you the best for the trip. You can do it!!! Greetings from Germany

plus the fact that he uses 110v to charge and Europe uses 220v it takes him about 1,6time longer to fully charge

It's SO satisfying to see you pushing your car. It's the best advertising for not driving (battery!!!) electric.
Get a neutral ground bounding plug for your battery pack that way the charger will think the battery pack is grounded that way you can charge with your battery pack
Legends only try legendary things. Best of luck on the rest of the trip, I hope the rest goes smoother.
I'm so excited to see your whole journey!! Your first episode really did leave me in awe!

Wow! Fun for Louis popped up on my feed after years!!! Still going on wild adventures wow that's awesome. Keepin' the dream alive!

Your videos make me anxious.
Best advice is to find charger places ahead of time
Then charger the car and once it’s under 40 % find the next place. Also solar would help a lot
OMG, I'm stressed just watching you. All I can say is good luck! Safe travels 🙏
Oh my, you have the patience of a Saint. At least you have your little 🐾 companion. 😊look forward to more.

Looking forward to this series!! Giving me serious nostalgia from the old rv trips back in the day
If you think the maximum mileage is 200 mi./day, I would go 150 to stop and charge just to err on the side of caution. Safe journeys !
Very awesome shot at 4:22. Good luck on your trip to NY! Hope you make it here!
I was holding my breathe, so exciting can't wait till the next video. Keep safe and warm.
Watching this series from the start again while waiting for the the latest episode of E bike adventure

This took me back to a couple of months back when I got my first EV.. charge anxiety is horrendous.
Oh what a legend, pushing the car, that was hard going. All my anxieties about breakdowns and had to watch in two sittings, haha .... go

"good quality food" .... we call that store whole paycheck. check out trader joes, most of the same foods but not with the expensive manufacturer name on them.
Buy 2 ecoflow batteries, that will give you 2 kwh of charge. It works on every EV, and you can use it for your heater in the cold nights.
I was so tense watching you do all that work 😅❤️ so glad your safe is all!
