    My favorite pencils. The old Mars Lumograph sets used to have the carbon version of their pencils in the 8B, and I never could understand why they were always so much darker then all of the other brands. Now they seem to have reformulated the graphite range and are only graphite, while the Lumograph Blacks have the carbon mix. I still have several of the older 7B and 8B's pencils; they work wonderfully.

    I watched the drawing you did and it absolutely amazing. Your daughter is a beautiful young lady with a smile that warmed my heart. I find it so hard to understand how people can be so cruel and mean. I pray for her and your family that this nightmare will be over soon and she can see just how special she really is. Take care and thank you for sharing this with us

    Harry I am actually speechless. What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful young lady. What a wonderful gift to give to your mother in law and Amelia's grandmother. I hope the Amelia has a strong bond with her grandmother and that that bond along with time and understanding will begin to heal all of you. Your talent is endless and your kindness is a needed commodity. Much love and respect Harry. God bless

    Never knew there were differences in pencils other than value. Very interesting. I did notice there's a sheen on regular pencil drawing but didn't know why. Thanks so much. Watched your other video too and it is so beautiful. I love to watch ballet. Your daughter is soo cute! How the h&** anyone could be mean to her is beyond my comprehension. 💞💞

      Regular office supply lines definitely tend to smudge more even if they're from the same brand. I usually go with a mix of the Mars Lumograph and those olive green Faber - Castell 9000 for my technical drawings (my favourite all around pencil is usually the F grade ones by Faber-Castell). And even between the 9000 and the regular office supply pencils (those with the little rubber dots on the barrel (do they actually sell those in UK as well? I'm German and as both those brands are German you will get the full range of things they sell here ^^') and there's quite a difference, the regular office supply ones somehow always manage to smudge where you wouldn't want them ^^'

    Those are definitely among the better pencils you'd get here in Germany. I use these and Faber - Castell 9000 for both technical drawings and well, regular, non-technical leisure time drawings. My favourites are F-grade Faber-Castells. I got both a tendency to be a bit heavy-handed and smudge around so those are the perfect mix between not being too scratchy and soft and not smudging too easily :)

    Yeah these are my favorite pencils to draw with. You can get even darker if you add the generals charcoal pencils the orange ones with these and you have this huge amazing range to work with.

    Thanks for the review. I've just bought both, and immediately started working on how to use them together. I got the woodless graphite lumographs and they're so smooth to use. I immediately made a couple of drawings with them. Then the Lumograph Black pencils came yesterday and I've been mucking around in the journal running staccato marks of the Black across dark layers of graphite, as well as blocks of tone, and it works much better than I thought it would. Tomorrow I'll play around with blending and erasure.
    Thanks for sharing the drawing video. Lovely drawing--good light

    It's interesting how they added a lot of different shades during the last years. They have come up with the 12B which is an unusual grade, plus they have added the HB black. They're definitely one of the most complete pencil range out there, don't cost so much, the B-grades are really soft but not smudgy.
    The other thing I like about Staedtler pencils is that they are very very sturdy. Here in Italy we use a lot the "Noris" range for school and office, we as a children used to treat the pencils in terrible manners, they often fell to the floor... but I NEVER had a single one of them breaking. They just go.
    The other issue other than blending you might have with the carbon ones is erasing. It's quite difficult since most of the times, I found the rubber just smearing around and it didn't really get rid of the marks. But anyway, thank you for your review, I was curious about your thoughts on them. 😀

      I am so so sorry for the delay in replying to you. You are so right about lifting the Carbon based pencils, using a vinyl eraser in the normal rubbing mode just makes a mess. The best way I found was to use a putty eraser and dab the eraser, up and down, lifting the layers. I normally dont touch an area with the Carbon pencils unless I am absolutely sure and even then I use very light layers at first and then darken. But you are right and it is something I wish I’d mentioned in the review but this is why I continually say you guys the viewers, subscribers and commenters are so important to this channel because you always come up with excellent ideas, critiques and questions and when other people watch the video and then read the comments, I think the comments help to complete the video. Thank you so much and I am so sorry for the delay.

    It is a beautiful pointe shoes drawing. I’m an x-ballet dancer and also an artist so I appreciate it. I’ve done ballet most of my life. Because of your daughter’s love of ballet and gymnastics I do hope she continues with them and not let others get in her way. She looks lovely. I just found this channel through Steve Mitchell Art then to Owens Art TH-cam Channels then to here and was not expecting to see a very good pointe shoe drawing.

    If your a graphite artist you wont be able to get the full tonal range without these carbon pencils there brillant and i have no problems uaing them with graphite game changers

  • @Marysart

    Harry, might I ask how do the Mars Lumograph Carbon sharpen? I ask, because I have and love the Piere Noir conte pencils to draw with, but they are a nightmare to sharpen for me. Point keeps breaking in my crank handle sharpeners. They can only be sharpened by knife it seems :(. Anyway, thank you for the review. I did not know about these. Always learn something new on The Art Gear Guide :).

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary they sharpen with no problems at all in my hand crank sharpener but not so well with a handheld sharpener. But I know exactly what you mean. I have the Piere Noir from my Conté sketch set and I have to use a craft knife and sanding block to sharpen it.
      But I think the Piere Noir are a little bit different because in the Conté Sketch set they have three what they call Carbone pencils and they sharpen okay for me in a hand crank. I just think all of these graphite/Charcoal or Carbon based pencils are brittle in nature. Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help

      @@TheArtGearGuide No worries Harry, you have satisfied my curiosity about the sharpening of the Lumograph black pencils. If I have a few extra pennies to spend I shall try them out for sure. :)

    The normal 8b pencils is maked by carbón?, I has bought a normal 8b mars lumograph and it was maked by carbón, I investigate it and I found that in the normal mars lumograph pencils only the 8b pencil is maked of carbón, but in your set look like is maked by graphite, what is it made of?

    Thank you for the review. I just received my 24-pack today. Would a fixative spray reduce or eliminate the graphite shine some? If so, what brand fixative would you recommend?
    Edit:. Forgot to say "graphite shine".

    Are they both equally erasable ?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use a light hand at first with the Mars Black and make a mistake and need to lift it will work, but if you go in immediately with a heavy hand using the Mars Black it is harder to lift than traditional graphite pencils. The Graphite is slightly easier to remove, even the softer range like 2B 5B etc, but it is the carbon in the Mars Black that makes it a bit more stubborn to lift.

    Isn't carbon , charcoal?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Technically it is but the Carbon pencils are made differently because they are not as brittle or dusty as Charcoal. Carbon pencils are made from the soot oil left after the burning process. I am sure there is a lot more to it than that but essentially that’s it. So they are from the same family so to speak just one has a wee bit more oil to it
