  • In this fly tying tutorial Cheech ties his favorite Stonefly pattern, the Masked Marauder 2.0.
    One summer as I was in-between jobs, I found myself working part time at a fly shop and fishing a LOT. That was the summer that Mickey Anderson and I would talk about stonefly nymphs, fly design, and look at his awesome pictures of bugs that he would find. This was between customers of course... Anyway Mick had started to notice that the fish would eat a skwala stonefly nymph really well if the fly was tied with really dark on top and really light on the bottom. This two toned effect made it's way on to my vise in the form of the Masked Marauder many years back, and it's available now through Fulling Mill. Like many of our flies, we keep tweaking designs and this has updated shell back material, tails, and a few techniques in construction. I really like this color combo and a dark brown/black combo as well. I usually tie this fly in size 8-12.

    Will you do another pod cast and tell us what confidence patters are, and which are your top confidence patters for generally anywhere, both to tie and fish. Or which color combos you like the best.

    Cheech that’s a complex stone but love the idea of the two tone bug!!

    That fly works about as good as the transmission in your truck, Cheech- once in a blue moon.

      See, the last time you borrowed my truck you tried to put the key in backward. Sometimes it’s the fly. Other times…???

      We have the original version in the shop. It is a great producer!

    Finishing off that wing case is very hard. On the fourth try still a faliure, there had to be an easier way. A better way is to reverse tie in the holo followed by a longer piece of fino skin first., then tie off and glue, slide the bead up snug next to it, wrap in the lead and finish the body as directed in the video. Finally, pull back the fino and holo and tie off behind the bead and clip the wing case and glue, makes a clean and durable head.

      I have messed with that technique before and I actually much prefer the one shown in the video. It illuminates any materials from hanging over the hook eye while I am tying the fly. It takes a little bit of practice, but it actually works really easily once you master it.

    Since you tied this pattern on a jig hook, won't the fly drift upside down?

    • @FlyFishFood
      @FlyFishFood  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not tied on a jig hook.
