Light bulb I didn't know your thumb wasn't suppose to move. I just bought a Martin Jr. I'm 71 and I quit playing for 20 years. I've been at it for 9 months. I'm on my 7th song I've written. I'm excited all over again. Someone told me if you get bored playing just lean a new song. It works better when you write a new song.
1. Maintain downward pressure from starting point to ending point. (press all the way through from the starting fret to the ending fret) 2. Memorize the starting and ending fret by your muscle memory to slide confidently. 3. Avoid moving the whole hand, make sure only your finger is moving. the thumb must remain in one spot and must act as an anchor point.
Hi! Maybe I can kindly ask you some advice… basing on this video my sliding should be alright, however when I play on an amp I hear to Much of the “scratching” on the string, even if the movement is quite sharp and there’s no buzzing. I sometimes enjoy that effect but when it is too loud doesn’t feel right. What that might depend on? Many thanks for any answer 😆
To whomever asked about the Beatles song, I am sorry I accidentally deleted the comment. The tune is Dig a Pony :-) Thanks for the question and sorry for deleting that :-)
@@tharun634 at some point the aching in your fingers (for me, that is) feels good and makes you happy if you havent picked up your guitar in awhile. That ache is the feeling of progress.
First you fixed my pull-offs and hammer-ons. Now you fixed my crappy slides! I always moved my whole hand for slides. The pinky is going to take LOTS of work before I trust it in a slide. THANKS TONY!!!
2 questions: 1. How to go about long slides of 8-10 frets (like 10 fret 2 string slide in blackbird) which will require thumb movement? 2. any tips for sliding down (from 4 to 2) and maintaining volume?
Andrew, Awesome question for longer slides. I feel like it is really important to develop the "illusion" of the long slide. Meaning starting off strong and giving the impression of direction. As long as you maintain pressure the slide you will be able to perceive the slide :-) (so thumb movement is definitely necessary here :-) ). Here are my thoughts on reverse slides taken from another question below: Reverse slides are difficult and the number one thing is to maintain that downward pressure and move efficiently. Since with a reverse slide we are effectively lengthening the string it is important to transfer as much energy as possible into that string by making quick, accurate, and efficient slides. :-)
Thank you so much for these tips!! They were extremely helpful! As an absolute beginner in learning guitar note slides these pointers helped me get the hang of it in a great way! Thank you so much
the thumb thing helped me on up slides. now I kinda use it as a resistance point bcs I find it hard sliding my fingers up the fretboard(to the head) thanks man
WOW im learning Nothing Else Matters right now and I wasn't sounding great because i couldn't make any noise with my slides but as soon as you said maintaining downward pressure i tried it and it sounded so good TYSM
Thanks for the thumb tip. Been playing for about four months. I’m working on Pink Floyd. Wish you were here and was having trouble sliding… keep on pickinggg
Thank you for the great slide lesson. The thumb anchor made a big difference in my accuracy. I am going to try and do the slide drills on a regular basis.
Thanks, Tony, for another simple, easy practice that will help me become a better guitarist. I'm enrolled in your TAC and also picking up all these internet videos--my partner complains I'm spending too much time with you! I tell her that's not possible.
This video really helped actually. I had already kinda figured out the downward pressure thing and the knowing where to go (I decided to try to learn the Iron Man intro as my first riff, because I love riffs), but I always thought you were supposed to move your whole hand, and I kept getting frustrated. I've only been playing guitar for a couple weeks, but I'm very glad I found this channel and this video, even with it being as old as it is. It helped a lot. Thanks!
It should probably help once you've developed your calluses more too. Not only will it not hurt as much pushing hard but your finger tips will be less fleshy and thus dampen the tone less
Great tips. But I will stick to my own style of practice, which is learning super complex songs and feeling like a noob for a month and then after two months mastering the super complex song and all the techniques used in it. I used this style to sings ultra complex Indian Classical songs. I am learning to play guitar and sing western style now. Notes are the same but the way they are structured is different.
A tip that also will improve the slides and helping you to keep the tone nice is to start on the 4th fret with your pinkie. Pick the tone slide in on the same fret with your 3rd finger and not loose anything of tone. When you can do this with all 4 fingers on the same fret you will absolutly have improved your sliding skills.. :-)
Got a guitar from my buddy from Aussie Land and I started playing yesterday and wanted to learn burning house by cam and there’s a slide with the capo on the 5th fret holding the B and A notes on different frets from the 9th to the 7th and then back down to the 13th and back up to the 11th and it’s so advanced it’s stopped me in my tracks lol but hopefully this’ll help me
Been trying to get a slide into a pull off in a riff I'm learning right the whole time I thought it was my pull off that was wrong as it had no volume, but turns out it was because my slides where icky... Thanks alot
Accidentally (not really) got myself an acoustic electric guitar with a built in pick up 4 months ago and I'm trying to play songs from Metallica and my slides sounds so terrible, this video helped me a lot, thanks
Once again, much appreciated lesson! I'm loving the drills you show at the end... I'm using your acoustic guitar lessons to learn my acoustic bass, anything you suggest I keep in mind when applying these lessons to the acoustic bass?
He makes it look easy. I have to press hard as hell and the friction makes the string cut into my middle finger and I can never get a clean sound on slides, always the note followed by ear pitching squeak when sliding

How're you doing sir?
@@keki9522 he dead.... :(
@@fantastico860 oh... I thought of that as well, that's why I decided to ask :(
How do you slide more than two frets? What does your thumb do then?
If you’re sliding more than two frets the thumb should move also.
The thumb position tip helped me out a lot. Thanks.
My fingers feel like I'm sliding over knife :(
They toughen up eventually. Sometimes it’s a good idea just to let them heal.
Lol🤣.... It'll definitely toughen up.

I did slice mine be careful doing that

Um. Yeah. The thumb thing. Wow. Changed my articulation and control during slides instantly. Thanks a ton!
When u slide past the intended fret ... Ugh!!🙄🌊
My problem is stopping right before the intended fret 🤦🏾♀️😒
Tell me about it.. I am so imprecise and then I hear it and it songs really bad..
My only advice for this would be to look at the fret you’re sliding to before you slide to it and to correct it in tempo to make it sound intentional
This helped a lot! I’m using simple guitar but my notes sounded so dead and you gave them life!
You are an awesome teacher. Thanks!
