I still have the Maximum Security cassette to this day. I need the cd! Awesome guitar playing by MacAlpine. One of my favorite guitar players. Beautiful melodies and song arrangments. Another fav of mine is "Hundreds of Thousands".
I have this on vinyl, cassette & CD now ! He was The first along with Yngwie to revolutionize the guitar after Van Halen in a metal context. I never heard a bad compo & probably never will. Adding George & Watson to sahara made my day. This tune will make you cry, IT'S THAT GOOD !!! Man dose he compose. My dream was to see Tony & Jason Becker re write history... Dammit !!! Now that would have been something !!!
The first time I heard Macalpine's first solo album... I found it on cassette in 2004 at a used music store in moncton, new brunswick... Spin-It-Records... plus his M.A.R.S thing... macalpine kicks ass...
I really like Tony MacAlpine.. I Had his album Maximum Security as a kid... Always thought he didn't get enough air-time. But then the competition was pretty fierce back then so not really surprising. His personal story is inspiring and I'm Glad he made it into this tough profession. Best of Luck to him.
What's hair have to do with anything? He's truly gifted with melodies that touch the hearts of those lucky enough to have heard him play. It's about the music guys. Tony is one of the most unselfish players of our time and he has brought so much to the Shred scene that he deserves our respect.
Tony have a soul of a real musician , i mean did u listen people to all his albums !? he adore classic which makes me raise the hat for him , i'm not gonna talk about his skills because it's clear! and more he deserve to be on the top beside satriani , Vai, malmsteen , petrucci, wylde....etc i appreciate him with all my heart , he really didn't get what he deserves =(
a new G3 lineup with Stanley Jordan, Greg Howe and Tony malcapine will be god man outstanding ) the album Extraction with Greg Howe is a masterpiece and the albums Cab and Cab2 with Tony Macalpine another masterpiece..in those albums the master Dennis Chamber is present on the drums playing nice fusion stuff great beats ...these brothas deserve more recognition )
MacAlpine hit the scene alone with Malmsteen and Vinnie Moore and I liked them all but MacAlpine's was always way more melodic. That's what I liked about his stuff. Difference between Bach and Chopin, I guess. Much props to him for not air-guitaring this tune. He's actually playing it!
I just saw tony on an episode of "that metal show" on VH1. What amazes me is how he can make his guitar work look so effortless. I mean, seriously, when you watch him on some of his lessons, he really makes it look like any idiot can pick up a guitar and just shred it! Mad props.
@OnedetachedonE well said, i remember hearing Edge of Insanity at a music store and laughed thinking it this isnt real. Tony is educated and one of the top musicians ever. who cares about color, music brings us together
i think my favorite part is 2:26, when the tracking messes up and reminds me i'm watching VHS. haha gotta love dated eighties tech! just the same TMac is a beast...
I saw Tony playing with Steve Vai, mostly keyboards. Before the show he was playing one of Liszt's "transcendental etudes", some of the most demanding piano music ever written. This all before I saw him pick up a guitar....it just wasn't fair how much talent this guy has!!
Like it love it or if you don't just go away. I true musician appreciates most all music. Music is as individual has the individual. Much like many many different personality's''' means many different kinds of music which can also greatly influence many. Point is don't trash on someones style'''' now to the good stuff... Tony is freaking awesome!!
He used to use Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups and he had at least one guitar with an Al Di Meola pickup in it, about the same time as this track was released.
I like he`s really playing over a backing track, cool. Some could just have done it "lipsyncing" but not Tony. Beautiful song, very melodic and much room room for melodic improvising and blistering runs. Only wish the video wasn`t so pixelated and blocky. Cool that you uploaded it anyway, thanks :)
@noshabibis well put... Tony has the technique to play pretty much anything he wants... what he chooses to play is certainly pleasing to my ear anyway :)
@7885andy thats amazing that you can say that because i feel the emotion in vai's music more then any other guitar player he is a true musician, but i guess we all have out opinions
@atnighthawk Very well put. I think this is lovely playing. All this stuff played as fast as possible to show off so called guitar skill looses its musical quality. This is without doubt the real deal, music at its best.
Amazing ! What an amazing chair he's sitted on !
this was a fav song of mine. awesome to hear it live! for those who gave it a thimbs down, you have no clue what good music is.
David, you must be a carpenter, cause you hit the nail on the head!!!
lol. hehe
You guys still alive or what?
I've been loving this tune since it was out,
good old days!!!!
TOny is a unique player
Man....his playing is sending shivers down my leg ... and spine. He's so darn talented and so under-appreciated. Gotta get me more of his music.....
I wore this tape out back in the 80's. This guy rocked. One of the best guitarists out there during that time.
hes an incredible muscian 1 of my favorites. Ive been a big fan since the 80s. I wish there was more of him on here
This song brings back amazing memories from my childhood romances. Thanks for posting it.
This is beautiful music at its best by a Black rock guirarist. This is a kick in the ass to all those who say Black people can't play rock guitar.

Tony is one of my favorite guitar player period.
He's awsome!
Beautiful song, great playing. Thanks That Metal Show for showcasing this guy
Tony is definitely one of my favs... man he rocks!!!
I can't believe this guy is both a guitar and keyboard god, this song is pure magic
his guitar tone and phrasing is amazing. Tony Mac is incredible
hell yes my friend, Building the Church is a piece of perfection with Tony in it.
Yep
Music is the freedom of the soul's emotions to convey beauty, & to glorify GOD'S Love .
More than 20 years old and it sounds better than ever!!!
Just amazing, the thinking of him to come out with the title of the song itself - TEARS OF SAHARA.
Hell yeah man! This guy is also a Master on keyboard as well! What else can you ask for! Rock on TMAC!
OMG!!! this melody it's beautiful!!!
The first time I heard Macalpine's first solo album... I found it on cassette in 2004 at a used music store in moncton, new brunswick... Spin-It-Records... plus his M.A.R.S thing... macalpine kicks ass...
just beatuful. this song has a perfect energy and emotion.
The best guitarist that I know , his melodies are between technique and unknown feelings, for me he is the best
One of his best songs....
Really love his melodic attitude
Shred with some (here more than some) sense :D

I'm sad to say that I've never even heard of this guy. Thank God for TH-cam.
macalpine songs can touch the soul!!!
I am a child of the 80's and I didn't hear about this guy until, like, yesterday. What the hell?
I just love this song! T-Mac rules!
Tony MacAlpine rulzz! Fantassstic Guitarist and Fantasstic Keyboardist!
Someone post Tony playing keyboards now. Pleeeezeee!!!

=(
He always cares about MELODY. You can tell he has heard these melodies in his head before he picked up his guitar.
Amazing song.
Incredible Guitarist.
beautiful so much feel for a song and its constructure!!!!
Tony simply shreds on guitar! I love his stuff.
This is oh so 80s - I love it!
first time i heard it, i was like. wow. just wow, i picked up my guitar and ever since then my top goal has been to play like tony macalpine.
Hi how's your life doing
Wow, you commented when I was three years old!
How's life going?
Excelente, puro sentimiento de verdad muy buena canción y un gran guitarrista.

a new G3 lineup with Stanley Jordan, Greg Howe and Tony malcapine will be god man outstanding ) the album Extraction with Greg Howe is a masterpiece and the albums Cab and Cab2 with Tony Macalpine another masterpiece..in those albums the master Dennis Chamber is present on the drums playing nice fusion stuff great beats ...these brothas deserve more recognition )
this is sick. back in 1987 i still crapped my pants while he was rocking out.
Tony was the most musical of the 'shredders' in my opinion. His songs weren't just vehicles to shred over.
Ecco, questo è quello che manca a molti strinpellatori di oggi....anima e non solo velocità.
yea man i listen to every single player from your list you're awesome, i wouldn't put that better myself.
Tony MacAlpine, very underrated.
Hi :) how ya doing?
You still alive?
this song makes me cry like a little girl!!! lol jejejeje.. a masterpiece
Your comment makes me cry cuz of nostalgia. I remember reading ur comment
for me the big 4 neo classical wise in the 80s will always be Macalpine, Becker, Malmsteen + Moore :)
+dannyboiee sounds like a law firm :P
certified neoclassical giants.
Mine includes Marty Friedman
i love his playing it's so melodic
BEAUTIFULL SIMPLY BRILLIANT!!!
It's a beautiful thing when technique meets pure emotion.
Tony was the most melodic of the "shredders". This is a great tune, not just a vehicle to show off chops.
This song is amazing.
Always loved Tmac he is a wonderful player.
Yes, all the songs are incredible. Key to the City, Sacred Wonder, and Dreamstate for instance are perfect.
I just saw tony on an episode of "that metal show" on VH1. What amazes me is how he can make his guitar work look so effortless. I mean, seriously, when you watch him on some of his lessons, he really makes it look like any idiot can pick up a guitar and just shred it! Mad props.
That's a beautiful guitar.
I feel you bro, it is SOO good!

@OnedetachedonE well said, i remember hearing Edge of Insanity at a music store and laughed thinking it this isnt real. Tony is educated and one of the top musicians ever. who cares about color, music brings us together
fantastic
have seen him perform in Steve Vai's band. Amazing player, managing keyboards and backup guitar both! Goes toe to toe with Vai in guitar duels ... \m/
This song is really great.
Awesome , the best, perfect !
wow this is really great
AMAZING GUITARRIST AND SOUND
I remember the edge of insanity record , killer !!!
i think my favorite part is 2:26, when the tracking messes up and reminds me i'm watching VHS. haha gotta love dated eighties tech! just the same TMac is a beast...
tony mc alpine is one of the best keyboard player, he played the key boards for vinnie moore on the album "minds eye"
I saw Tony playing with Steve Vai, mostly keyboards. Before the show he was playing one of Liszt's "transcendental etudes", some of the most demanding piano music ever written. This all before I saw him pick up a guitar....it just wasn't fair how much talent this guy has!!
He and Tosin Abasi are the real deal in music
Like it love it or if you don't just go away. I true musician appreciates most all music. Music is as individual has the individual. Very nice, Tony!
OMG this song killed me!! What more can I say?!
His phrasing is stunning.
great riff ... full of melody
He used to use Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups and he had at least one guitar with an Al Di Meola pickup in it, about the same time as this track was released.
