  • Bill Grout from Aspen Hot Glass is making a borosilicate glass pendant with a GTT Cheetah torch.
    Visit our Etsy store here: www.etsy.com/sh...
    The pressed dimple pattern is created with the help of a "florist frog" found at craft stores in the floral department. This style has been commonly referred to as an "implosion pendant" which was detailed in a great tutorial published in FLOW MAGAZINE (this technique has since been described as "compression".) Using the difference in viscosity at temperature to produce a three dimensional fold generates the three dimensional look.
    I did a short remix showing finished pendants at the end:

    Bill became a full time artist and started blowing glass in 1993 and Rae left the corporate world in 2002 to be with Bill and become a glassblower. In 2016 they began incorporating metal working, dragon attire and Steampunk designs into their glass art. Together they live on a small farm that includes orchards, an extensive garden with a green house, Steampunk shop, Torch shop for torch work glass blowing, Bills Man Cave equipped with a electronics wing and Brew house.
    Their farm has fantastic views overlooking the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Together they spread love and harmony, sharing this fantastic journey called life.

    Thank you for these videos. As a Veteran suffering with anxiety, depression, and PTSD, I wish I could truly describe for you the emotions elicited by these. Between the music, and the artistry, it is truly something that I found extremely relaxing. I have started watching some before bed and they actually have helped me wind down and fall asleep. So again, thank you. And keep up the beautiful work.

    I first saw this video in 2014 when I had purchased my first torch (mega minor and a lil smith) and this had a profound impact on how I see and approach the material. Now I own a beautiful head shop in New Jersey that sells all my work and work from friends who we teach and I couldn’t be happier. For what it’s worth, thank you from the bottom of my heart and if your ever in NJ come find “Hub City Smokes”!

    I really want to get into glass blowing and the glass craftsmanship industry, making pieces and what not. But it's really cool to see how these designs are made. Honestly one of the best videos I've found even without voice. Such attention to detail, applied knowledge, and artistic touch. Love this.

    I work in the fiber optic extrusion field for a medical company in Colorado springs. We do not work with Borosilicate but I am amazed at how similar our technics are.
    Our preforms come with core, cladding, then shock jackets and in process we ad a clear Teflon coating. But during our process I use a hydrogen torch and a dual rotating head, glass lathe to insert and submurse strain gauges and UV dampeners to protect the core.
    I don't know anything about cosmetic or artistic glass work... and am surprised at how fun that looks. My certs and skills are from chemistry lab construction. So its even more shocking that our tooling is almost identical. But I don't see a vacuum hood? Is that a tool your industry uses?
    And how do you know what colors to add?

    • @jasmine2501
      @jasmine2501 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use safety hoods for ventilation, yes of course. Boro art glass grew from the scientific world, borrowing techniques from the traditional art glass world. Colors have been developed over the past 30 years or so, with a fairly rich palette available today. We simply choose from those colors, or make our own colors, based on artistic factors. Pipe making is become very popular recently, and it heavily borrows from scientific techniques. There isn't much difference between a complicated bong and a laboratory setup, except I have actually used the latter. So, we're seeing some cross-over there as well. Very interesting question, I'm amazed nobody had anything to say about it for 4 years ::)

    As a newer glass-blower in boro, this work is freaking awesome mann... I've worked with several types of materials and craft pendants more commonly w/ soft lass, but this is beyond epic in the magnification of the bursting-designs (as you said, boro clear is MUCH cleaner for visuals through magnification). Beautiful work, I'll be back to letcha know how it goes for me:)

    As metal worker, I find it fascinating how they don't need flux and the glass never oxidizes.

    • @WilliamGrout
      @WilliamGrout  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mostly true however flame chemistry is critical for colored glass and we can oxidise or reduce the surface to get different color effects by adjusting the torch. Glass will boil when overheated which is not good and it can devitrify when overworked which also is also very bad. Glass is sometimes referred to as "fluxed silica". The composition is by definition already a mix of pure silica sand and fluxing agents which brings down the melt temperature and make it more workable. Devitrified glass can occur when too much of the "flux" has been burned off.

    Hey William, great video! Your technique is smooth and clean so it's a pleasure to watch. Non glass artists don't realize how much skill and time it takes to work glass with confidence and grace like you did in this video. 1 Question for you if you don't mind... when I make my implosion pendants with a very similar technique, the disc seems to become concave when I am imploding. Wondering if I am heating the edges too much and the center of the dot field is not getting direct heat enough?

    When you heat the edge the clear starts moving with gravity and begins a three dimensional fold around the color dots. Pressing flat at intervals helps control this rolling action, and keeps everything from getting too hot. The key is the clear is moving and the color is staying in place. At least the tips are. Hope that helps!

      +Sergio Ariel Díaz Díaz its actually a compression...implosion is done on a tube.

    • @cosmoglassworks
      @cosmoglassworks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some people will argue that it has to be on a tube to be called an "implosion", which is fine. Call it "compression" or "implosion" or whatever you want to call it. To me they are all implosions regardless of whether they start on a rod or a tube. At the end of the day if you're blowing glass and making nice stuff, doesn't matter to me what you call it...
