Like a miracle. I followed you step by step through the process. I was never confused or lost. I just copied what you did and my hp touchsmart runs like NEW. I can't even hear it anymore. Used to sound like a jet engine. Thank you for doing what you do!

Although the HP TouchSmart 300 may not be the most technically advanced pc, It's pretty darn dependable! I've had this thing for over ten years without an issue.

My company uses Dell OptiPlex 3011 and 3030 (both non-touch) and so far we haven't seen any overheating issues. I think these systems are a good fit for businesses and they save a lot of space. Replacing a defective LCD is a pain though. Keep the great videos coming!

These all in ones are really bad for over heating at the best of times but using a desktop processor with laptop cooling is totally insaine, what goes through the minds of the designers is beyond me. Great Video Tim, nice professional job

I absolutely loved this video as it helped me replace the internal power supply unit earlier this year. Now it has a black screen and both fans running high speed. I disconnected the hard drive and the CD drive and powered it back on, no difference. Could it be the psu again?

the shit thermal pad on the gpu shrinks over time on this model touchsmart, this action is a failsafe. it detects the INSTANT rap up in GPU temp on first boot indicating no present cooling solution, it prevents booting or display and cycles as much airflow through the case as possible. It's actually a pretty cool thing most computers wouldnt do, letting your GPU actually fail on you. Same thing happened to mine, used a copper shim and some actual thermal compound to bring the temps down to mid 30c. Thermal pads are NEVER appropriate for a Gpu. It's designed to fail. Most people wont even get a pc that old repaired because it isn't worth the hourly rate and they just buy a new one.
This pc is, unlike most small form-factors INCREDIBLY easy to fix this particular problem. And service overall.
Been going another 5 years. Recently upgraded to a amd quad core and 8 gigs ram. And my mom still uses it for all her ebaying and it works great.
Have repaired attempted repair touchsmart 300 models this way with, 9 were fixable with the shim. Rest were casualties of stupidity/ the owner of one let it sit for over an hour after booting to see if it would turn on cooking the gpu and popcorning the motherboard and damaging multiple solder joints and small components.
Doing this or repeatedly trying to start the machine when you know its not working before bothering to seek service assistance with something you yourself know you dont know anything about, THAT could damage the machine. Imagine that. By the time idiots bothered seeking repair they were fucked, not because gpu died, because of using a shitty thermal pad over properly designing a flush heating solution or simply using a copper shim.

For those who have a loud fan and blak screen that won't turn on, this is the solution:
Turn off the computer, and then remove the power cord.
With the power cord disconnected, press and hold the power button for five seconds.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the computer.
Repeatedly press the F10 key about once every second for five seconds after turning the computer on.
    Wait five seconds.
Press the F5 key. This restores the default settings of the BIOS.
Press the Enter key. This accepts the changes.
Press the F10 key. This opens the Save and Exit window.
Press the Enter key. This saves the changes, exits the BIOS, and then the computer restarts.
After the computer restarts, the screen should display the HP logo.

Really helpful video I Did it all working properly the only thing I have Noticed is that you did not placed thermal paste on the chip-set just on the processor but besides that I found it really helpful mine is working properly now no more sudden shutdowns at all.

If you notice there is a thermal pad attached to the chipset side of the heatsinc so no need for paste. Thanks for posting.

What about that big battery looking piece? Can it die? I checked my computer and the fans and hard drive are fine but the computer won't work. The screen is still black and the fans are loud when I try turning it on.

  • @cesard024
    @cesard024 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi I followed your steps to clean the fans and i out it back together and everything was fine. I turned the computer on and it was working great. Afterwards i ran an update on it and when it restarted the screen wouldnt stop flashing between a black screen, gray screen, and red green blue horizontal layer screen. Do you have an idea for what maybe causing this? Would it be need to be restored or is it more likely a hardware issue? The computer is the same model as the one in the video. Thank you

    Tim -
I am working on a HP300. The CPU fan runs at high speed and the computer will not boot. I previously cleaned and reseated the CPU which fixed it, but only temporarily. The problem returned and I, again, reinstalled the processor. It again booted, but after being off for a few hours, it failed again. Do you have any ideas? Could the CPU (AMD) be defective?

    • @TimsComputerRepair

Bonsaverh It's worth our base fee for tearing down a system like that. Wasn't to bad really. The customer usually expects the worst in these cases so imagine the surprise when they find out they don't need to buy a new computer. They will gladly pay $150 or more to keep from buying new. Now the rig is running like new. Thanks for watching.

Hi everyone! I read that a lot of you have the same problem with your HP. Black screen and the fan blowing hard. It's a common problem of GPU. There is a trick that you can do, like a "reflow", and maybe it will work again. Possible not for more than 6 months. Remove the heatsink of the cpu and the gpu chip and power on your pc. You can check if the cpu and the gpu chip start to heat up. If yes , possibly they are in good contidion. Leave your PC to work like this for about a minute and shut it down. Plug the heatsink and close it properly to test if it works. If not try it again with leaving your pc for more hour without the heatsink.

    • @TimsComputerRepair
      @TimsComputerRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Ah the old reflow trick. Is that still floating around? Thanks for the info. You would be lucky if that holds for 6 hours if at all.

    • @TimsComputerRepair

Try a new power adapter. If that does not work your computer probably has a bad motherboard. You will have to take it apart and remove the hard drive where your data is stored to retrieve your data.

This is extremely late but there actually is a video card that comes in some of these models.
If you look on the motherboard, there is an MXM graphics card slot that places the card right underneath the CPU heatsink and it's own heatsink that places the fins inline with the original heatsink. Strangely, the MXM heatsink that works with this chassis seems almost non-existent:

Asa Gibson That does not sound good. Sounds video chip related.

Asa Gibson I am sorry to say that if you have a video chip issue with that computer you are probably better off replacing the computer. Tough to say without it on my bench. I would recommend taking it to your local, trusted repair shop to confirm.

Thanks so much! The funny thing is it started up an hour or so ago. It prompt me to recover a later date... not sure if it's a bug or hardware issues. I'm still going to get it check though because I'm sure this will happen again. I showed a friend who repairs computers for a living and he had never seen a computer do that before... I'm lost for words so off to the repair shop in the morning. Thanks again Tim.
