Yeah, I've met a lot of famous people and I let them be, but if they notice me, I just smile at them and be on my way. Though I really want to take pictures but I don't want to be rude especially when they're trying to "disguise" themselves.
During one of the anime conventions, I was in my full Nico armor mode and badges while Sora Tokui just passed near me. But I decided not to bother her since I will be seeing her in individual face to face session later on that day. (But if there's no meet and greet session, I might at least wave her from a bit far so that she would notice my Nico merches though).

She went to Yodobashi Camera, that's not an otaku shop but a large electronic retail store, and Yodobashi Akiba is tailored for tourists. The Yodobashi is also at a different exit to the otaku stores which is literally at the opposite end of the station. Otakus don't hang out where she was.
Incidentally, the one time I've been to Japan, it was when Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai had just debuted, so there were ads with pics of the characters everywhere in Akiba then (including Rikka, natch).
Japanese generally ignores every people around them except their relatives or friends... but the only ones who can notice her are probably the otakus, considering that Akihabara is otaku paradise.
Ur only talking about people in big cities. That’s as true as in NYC for U.S. as it is for Tokyo for Japan. Actually middle-aged ladies in Osaka are so nosy they can’t not talk to people.
Akihabara is for tourists, especially Yodobashi Camera. Only people you find at Yodobashi Camera Akiba are Chinese tourists buying duty free crap for their relatives, not actual otakus.

Well she should go to akihabara in disguise because once upon a time she created a group of heroes who fought against monsters who wanted to eradicate otakus
Before the pandemic Kashiwagi Yuki made a video to see if she was recognized in Akiba. I think It took a while for some fans to approach her. But Maaya's face isn't on TV as often as an active idol so I don't think she would be recognized.
The way she walked she stand out more. Theres no way peoples didnt noticed it was her. The peoples were just polite and let her enjoy like a normal people since its not so often celebs have free time to play outside. This is Japan we're talking about.😂
