I had the love and hate relationship with Serena. In my opinion, she’s just a girl who’s made bad decisions. But the problem is that she never seems to learn from the problems, everywhere she went she was causing some drama. But regardless I love her.
I think that's more applicable to Blair, she caused problems everywhere she went, even in different countries and continents. When Serena wasn't around this group of friends she thrived, like when they came looking for her and thought she was getting married and tried to ruin a wedding that had nothing to do with her or Serena and she was with Steven, she was happy and healthy, but they never wanted her to forget her past and move on

She was able to successed in Yale is because of her charm and great personality, the dean was clear with blair that blair except her grades has nothing for her. Also the episode when serena was in Hollywood and end up being the director assistant just by her interest from the book the film was adapting. Columbia's dean also said encourage serena to travel, get new experiences and be more ambitious because she has potential.

the dan and serena relationship always weirded me out. the way the writers and some fans of gg continued to ship them after seing dans red flags and them becoming step siblings was incredibly weird. they were neverrr meant for each other. i think having the two -especially serena- still explore her feelings for her at the time step brother made me feel icky about her (and obviously dan as well)

I read the books in middle school (that and the “The Clique” series GAVE ME LIFE! Now THAT is a book series that I would love to get a TV show because the movie that Tyra Banks EP’ed did it no justice). The GG show did a decent job overall with the adaptation, but the books shamed Serena much worse. The show was pretty tame with it lol. I’m thinking about re-reading the GG series because now that I’m older and thinking about it, Dan and Chuck were horrible people, and Blair was a horrible friend. Serena definitely deserved better.
I also wanted to add are that no matter a person's experiences and how "mature for their age" they may be, the human brain doesn't stop maturing until 25-30 yrs of age so we deal with things virtually the same way no matter what intellectually and emotionally because of that. Serena was likeable to everyone in a way thst was almost effortless and Blaire was envious of that.
I really hated the way so many people preyed on her, she was such a sweet girl and it's like people seek out to ruin people like that because they're filled with darkness. The reason why i always hated Blair and was more sympathetic to Serena is that Serena felt akin to a Fiona Gallagher for me, a genuinely good girl who had a terrible upbringing that led to her poor impulse control and decisions. Whereas Blair was just a demon in every sense of the word. The way the show just slutshamed Serena and never acknowledged her early victimisation is INSANE

I think her being less competent than blair is the biggest lie in the show. She was able to successed in Yale is because of her charm and great personality, the dean was clear with blair that blair except her grades has nothing for her. Also the episode when serena was in Hollywood and end up being the director assistant just by her interest from the book the film was adapting. Columbia's dean also said encourage serena to travel, get new experiences and be more ambitious because she has potential.

I will never get over the grown adults sx*ualizing Serena from a very young age... even Rufus making comments about her. it was so disgusting and like you said its a show, but this happens in the real world and people like to shift the blame onto women because if not then they would have to address their family members, their workplace, school and want to act like those problems don't exist because it's how they cope. Her mother was all about status and wealth and wanted to avoid any responsibility as a parent.
Thank you for this! So many people just hate Serena and refuse to see how let down she was by pretty much everyone around her. The people closest to her were her biggest haters, and aside from Eric she didn't have a real support system. Her story is actually pretty sad.

the dan and serena relationship always weirded me out. the way the writers and some fans of gg continued to ship them after seing dans red flags and them becoming step siblings was incredibly weird. they were neverrr meant for each other.
i think having the two -especially serena- still explore her feelings for her at the time step brother made me feel icky about her (and obviously dan as well)

I read the books in middle school (that and the “The Clique” series GAVE ME LIFE! Now THAT is a book series that I would love to get a TV show because the movie that Tyra Banks EP’ed did it no justice).
The GG show did a decent job overall with the adaptation, but the books shamed Serena much worse. The show was pretty tame with it lol.
I’m thinking about re-reading the GG series because now that I’m older and thinking about it, Dan and Chuck were horrible people, and Blair was a horrible friend. Serena definitely deserved better.

I also wanted to add are that no matter a person's experiences and how "mature for their age" they may be, the human brain doesn't stop maturing until 25-30 yrs of age so we deal with things virtually the same way no matter what intellectually and emotionally because of that. Serena was likeable to everyone in a way thst was almost effortless and Blaire was envious of that.

I really hated the way so many people preyed on her, she was such a sweet girl and it's like people seek out to ruin people like that because they're filled with darkness. OMG what you said about Kathy Hilton and Paris being similar to Serena and Lily is sooo true, she sent Paris off to boarding school and she had a traumatic experience because she was trying to protect her image and brand which I understand to a certain extent, but they don't like to deal with the problems themselves as the parent. I feel like if this show would've gone on longer Serena would have had her moment like Paris did where she told her story and what she experienced as a child. It's true that tv shows depict real life and a lot of people like to act as though it doesn't. sometimes tv shows are the tamed versions.

Serena actually had a good grasp of self identity that’s why she didn’t get lost in the money. However Blair didn’t, Blair spent so much time pretending and it wasn’t until Chuck that she actually started to get a sense of self. I love the characters equally and tbh they represent different phases in a woman’s life.
But let's not forget how immature she was when Dan and Blair started dating.....but Blair forgave her for sleeping with her boyfriend....

Serena was preyed upon many times, but she also played into it even when friends and family tried to warn / save her. She’s delusional and doesn’t know what she wants or needs until it’s too late and shit hits the fan. I see her as someone with a huge heart, but her indecision & failure to recognize red flags is annoying. I think Dan fell out of love with her because of these things, not because he intentionally wanted to use her. Anyone in their right mind would be exhausted by that level of indecision. I resonate with Serena as a character because Im this person a lot of times, minus that crazy level of indecisiveness. So its no hate, but I think she suffers from not knowing what she truly wants or needs because everyone has always told her & projected onto her which I think blinded her at times. Def think that once Dan & S became literal family they should’ve just dropped it. They’re literally repeating what their parents did… look how indecisive Lily was about Rufus and how long it took them to finalize their relationship. Disagree, Dan preyed on Serena and even showed how he really felt about her in his book. He was a predator just like the rest of them and him being Gossip Girl proved that, for him to be GG and then be mad about the whole Georgina thing makes him look unhinged lol Dan was a judgmental snob who thought he was better than her and held jealousy because he didn’t have what she did. A lot of men are jealous of women who grew up better than they did and didn’t have to struggle, that’s why he brought it up every chance he got

This is one of the points of the video. How did she "play into it"?? Because she didn't know she was being preyed upon or she prefered to believe that these people had good intentions, she "played into it"? No offense but that's odd. She believed men's lies, after the first season almost all her partners manipulated her, you can't play "into it" when you're actually being manipulated. She sometimes didn't believe Blair when she warned her bc there was lack of proof and Blair judged people by her classist standards most of the times. But the fact that she gets judged for that specifically and people see it as "she played into it" is the misoginy i think we all need to unpack.
