- Scott Tatum is a seasoned veteran in the fields of emergency medicine and tactical medical support. With over 35 years of experience, Scott's career has spanned the adrenaline-fueled roles of helicopter rescue work, street medic, and currently, the med team leader for a county sheriff's Bomb Squad and Tact Team, in addition to teaching tactics to aircrew members for US Customs and Border Protection Air & Marine Operations.
This episode, however, takes us on a different kind of mission: Scott shares the profound and personal story of fulfilling a promise to his mother as she faced the end of her life due to aggressive cancer. The decision to ensure her passing was without suffering, the conversations had, the goodbyes shared, and the ultimate act of love and duty performed.
Scott opens up about the mental and emotional toll this experience exerted on him, leading to a complete erasure of his memories of his mother before that fateful day. Despite undergoing extensive therapy, including EMDR, the memories remain elusive, sparking questions about the impact of high-stress professions on personal relationships and mental health.
Join us as Scott reflects on his incredible journey through medicine and rescue, the challenges of compartmentalizing professional and personal identities, and the silent struggles that professionals like him face.

It has taken me a little while to listen to this one because I lost my dad to lung cancer and I wasn't in a hurry to go down that road again, but so glad I did. Still listening, but on the paranormal part right now which prompted me to comment. I knew another guy who did ghost hunting as a side hobby and he had some very interesting stories. Ones that aren't wild or off the wall, but super interesting. I bring this up because I don't know, but I want to believe there is something else out there after this life. My brother was killed in a car accident when he was 20 back in 1997. When my dad finally accepted that he was dying, my mom kept trying to reassure him that he would see my brother again. That's my hope. Would so love to talk to Scott! And Andy, you're awesome, too!
I saw you yesterday Andy but you looked a little surrounded so I didn't stop to say hi, but thanks for all you're doing here you're an inspiration and much appreciated
The life flight route is over my house. Every time I heard the helicopter, I say a little prayer.
The last 45 minutes got to me in the feels. Andy is a truly empathetic and wise man
God dammit this is why I love listening to Andy interview people. We're in the middle of a heavy emotional topic bringing up way too many thoughts and feelings of my own father's cancer diagnosis and passing and then BAM!!! 20 minute Ghostbusters tangent lol.
Same! I put off listening to this one, but so glad I did.
1:11:55. Andy didn’t show it but in his mind he just had the craziest reaction
I’m thankful that you survived your tummy ache, Andy.
Finding somebody else to make fun of Michael on camera just wouldn’t quite hit the same. We are blessed.
This video brought back a lot of memories from the time I put my own mother into hospice in Canada, she also died from cancer that metastasized into her lungs. After 33 years of having been able to "compartmentalize" my thoughts of her so that I only remembered the best memories, this video convinced me to go back over a few pictures and address my decision to "hide" portions of her life that were painful.
Emotionally, this was a difficult video for me to watch, at least hearing how Mr. Tatum was able to keep his promise, but I am grateful for having watched it and how it convinced me to change my approach to the passing of my Mum (sorry for the spelling, born in the UK).
Thank you both for providing the motive to reopen all of the doors, she faced her death with a grace, humor and courage that I had forgotten, and she deserved to have it all remembered.
Cheers, eh.
Very powerful episode. As a retired first responder, I could relate to alot of the discussion.
impactful, humble, must listen for first responders. I volunteer in the UK as a First Responder (solo crew) and although working with HEMS/Critical Care isn't regular, the locker still fills up and we need to make sure we are all talking and engaging before it comes to great. Ghostbuster, starred, important, flagged ha!
Awesome to see cleared hot showing up in my notifications again!
Holy fuck, I just dealt with his same problem last year after getting injured on the job. It’s not an easy fight, but it can be done. This was a very relatable interview. Strong work Andy
I'm willing to bet... Glover will reach out to this guy as a future instructor for FieldCraft ... there's no way he let's this level of an amazing human not join his team
I was really drawn into this podcast, Scott Tatum was very interesting and had a great way of talking about his life that made me listen. The Ghost Hunter tangent was a big plot twist I never saw coming. The look on your face Andy was probably the same I had at that moment too.
This guy has an incredible story- Thanks for another great podcast Andy!
I was told something very similar, to be able to start to heal and get past it was recommended by the professionals working with me in the recent years that i should retire from fire service and start taking care of me. One of the hardest things I've done this past Oct., other physical medical issues besides burnt out for 2nd time. still not easy, but getting there. The 'lost feeling,' "what do i do now(?)," "im useless," blah blah is no joke. It's been a game changes in a positive way, and still at it. If only it was so east to recognize when we need help, not just from us looking at another, but ourselves looking back at ourselves. 💚
Appreciate u both talking about ur mums as i lost my mum recently to cancer & r relationship was difficult but thete was a basic love there at the moment there is just anger & trying to under stand the process of grief & if what iam feeling is normal. Thank u both. 😎🙏👊✌🇬🇧
Fantastic Podcast Andy. Thank you for sharing so much Scott. This one is one of my favorites.
A source told me that for or weeks after that cop's resignation, his fellow officers would fling acorns at each other at the station and yell "Shots fired!". I can only imagine the hazing he would have received from his peers if he had tried to stay on with that department.
Any department. I'd be surprised if he works in the profession again.
Love podcasts that take a wild turn out of nowhere 😂
Holy fuck this one gets HEAVY!!...
It gets heavy but man I love Andy's ability to bring a little bit of levity back into a conversation no matter how heavy the topic is. 1 minute they're talking about his mother's cancer bringing back way too many feelings and memories of his mother's cancer bringing back way too many feelings and memories of my own fathers cancer and passing and then bam! They hit you with the Ghostbusters 🤣
This is why Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) is so important. We have it in Canada, and it relieves the burden from the family when end of life care gets down to the nitty gritty. It’s hard enough to lose a loved one with also having to be the one to put them down, possibly breaking the law and risking a charge while you’re at it.
The release conversation is accurate in my experience. Spent 7 years in the Marines and didn't have any PTS issues until I got out and stopped doing it. Then I had a lot of issues for awhile. After 3 years of civdiv I got into EMS and noticed the same thing now with people who have been doing it awhile and they have minimal issues, but I do try expressing it to them that those issues will pop up a lot more after. So many are excited to be done cause they think it'll be better to not deal with it anymore, just like many in the military think, but in my personal experience and that of my friends that's not the case. That release comes on quick once the exit from that mindset happens. Not an expert and not saying this is a certainty just my experience and opinion.
This one hits hard! Thank you.
It was one 2:12:07 of the best interviews you have had. I am 60 and don't want to quit. What do you do w/o a team.
That was an awesome podcast episode Andy. You are such a good interviewer and the life advice you can offer in real time is very high quality. Very impressive. Thank you
"It seems like you made a difference in countless people's lives." "When are you going to focus on making a difference in yours."
Wow that hit hard. Andy is the therapist we all need. 😢
Another awesome interview. Thanks
Scott kept his promise. His mother was aware and gave consent. He helped her pass with no pain and as much dignity as one could ask for in that moment. (I got a great deal) I was not prepared for that 😂
I watched the whole thing. Donut Operator has a good breakdown of it.
Dude was absolutely convinced he was shot well after this video stopped
to the point where he was saying his legs weren't working.
He had seen a picture of the surpressed pistol the perp was supposed to have had.
Donut has the video slowed down and you can see the acorn bounce on the car roof.
Just goes to show what the mind can do.
Whether it is warranted or not…
@@SGTUSMCVET269 Exactly. It's perception, and not reality. Perception turns into reality with no regard to if it is or not.
Speaking of Donut ...
Donut as a guest on Cleared Hot, Andy? *hint hint*
Chills. Great, great episode.
Gave me a new respect for life flight guys. I see them multiple times a day fly over my house.
3:56 flashbacks to the nutty squirrel wars
Great interview!
Ok not many of these please - hit me hard
Is it a mental health issue we have or is it a pharmaceutical issue? I also became an EMT for a similar reason. My dad was a fire fighter, so I did it thinking it would be cool, but most of the calls were medical. I felt helpless on those calls, became an EMT. After many years, you do get a little numb. I can't imagine what it would be like on his level for that long.
Good episode.
😭 Good Lord this man speaking of his mother was torture for me.
You’re not crying, I’m crying.
Are y’all sure what this guy is admitting to is safe to admit on camera?
Exactly what I was thinking
Not a Green Beret, Andy. I heard he was a retired DEVGRU guy. 😊
I can see Scott is suffering. This was disturbing in the sense that a doctor allowed a son to administer life ending drugs. We cannot divorce what we do from how it messes with our minds. I was present at my Mom’s death, the grief lasted years. I wish he would’ve let the doc do it.
Andy any idea why your podcast on the Apple platform will randomly repeat itself? I’ve also noticed this on other podcasts as well. Just wanted to make sure you guy’s new this was happening. TY
Ghost hunter: I took these strange ass pictures of this house that looked like it was on fire.
Anyone: Where are they?
Ghost hunter: idk :3
HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE THIS PRINTED AND BACKED UP IN TRIPLICATE?! Is it not a big deal? Great guest overall though.
When the guy started down the ghost hunting rabbit hole, I immediately thought about the revelations of astro body guy a few weeks go.
Just a thought, if they stayed in the house for an entire week and left all the stuff that would most likely get them caught then they knew him personally. Definitely someone in his extended circle...
That Officer never should have been a cop smh 😮
Fuk some of that was hard to listen to, great conversation 🤙
My mother had the same thing your mother had. She wanted to die at home so they pretty much gave her morphine to knock her out and we brought her home. She passed 11hrs later.
Adrenaline is a powerful drug to the uninitiated.
🙌❤
The problem you addressed about active shooters is often related to their experience with injustice. They feel their life is over and people who just didn't care about the injustices they experiences in their lives results in their inflicting what they believe is justice. In simpler terms, they got abused in school, work, life and they have decided to die. They choose to shoot people to draw attention to their pain. They shoot at law enforcement because they feel cops are responsible for not prosecuting those who cost them in life. They die when they realize the cops will not kill them. It's all about a lack of justice. Yet no one sees what these people write? Would people learn about the injustices they experienced, the bullying, the teasing, and would any of those people be held responsible? No. Because no one knows who they are. Justice is never served. And they keep getting away with it.
The other officer in the car's front seat was.prior service.
Didn’t catch goat’s name .. not Tasha.
For the love of god! Can we get grunt style to make more toddler sized tshirts for our man here?! Amateur hour!!!!
25 years as a cop. I also have an oak tree in my yard. i dont get how you confuse this for gunfire. just sayin
Psychedelics may be an option for Scott. He has similar symptoms to Operators Syndrome.
Andy and Leah aren't married anymore?
The alleged suspect had a suppressed weapon
I agree with what he did. But is he opening himself to legal issues
4 days of riot duty dam that’s nothing
Propofol is very much called the Michael Jackson drug. I aged into my first Colonoscopy a few years ago. EVERY nurse I talked to in the room referred to it as The MJD My response
To this was "This procedure is hard enough to sell to people as it is so since things didn't end well for Michael you may want to refer it to something else."😂😂
AKA "Jackson juice" or "Milk of amnesia".
I have to have one in a few months. Any tips?
@killermonjero...the idea of the procedure is way worse than the actual event. The cleanse is.....explosive. Good luck on your procedure. I pray you get good results.
All of the problems with mental health, video games , trans problems are not unique to the US.
I believe this story about euthanizing his mom is total horseshit. I have been a firefighter paramedic for 20 years no off duty medic or nurse would be given medication’s from a doctor and then be allowed to administer them to end a family members life complete nonsense.
First
House occupied by criminals for week? 18 years ago post 9/11in Red State Arizona🐂💩
Thank you Andy you’re variety of content never disappoints ✌🏻🫶🏻🇺🇸
I thought It was great while being a patient in a hospital and the fucking nurse WAKES you up at 1:00 a.m. to ask you if you want a sleeping pill.🤬🤬🤬
