Definitely when they were at their best. I know they became massive after Pyromania....but in my opinion after Pete Willis was fired....they lost a lot of their magic and then of course once Steve Clark passed away they lost their primary songwriter. High 'N Dry is a high water mark for them
Yeah I like this lineup the best. Pete was great. I get that he was being an angry drunk and making things tough on the band. Such a shame. Phil Collen is a nice guy and can really play but I prefer Pete. Phil tends to over play in my opinion. Sometimes he sounds good but then he starts playing way too many notes and it doesn't sound good. Slow down and do what works for the song. And you are correct about Steve being their main song writer. After he passed, they sucked. They play real girly stuff. I still love the 1st 3 albums and I recently bought a 5 cd box set with early stuff plus On Through the Night and High N Dry. Some of those early songs really rocked. As much as I love their early stuff it's really hard to listen to this neutered crap they play today.
the original band of most bands are usually the best; and def leppard is a good example !

that album was cutting edge all-the-way when it came out. Pete Willis had a great style, edgy yet melodic and great sense of space and time. Cheers.
