Lerdsila: The Most Evasive Muay Thai Champion Today

Lerdsila, nick named the "Eel," "Mayweather of Muay Thai," is one of the most spectacular competitors today. Like many of his Jockey Gym campmates (Saenchai, Somrak, Silapathai), he is evasive and tricky.
Personally, I think he's more evasive than the others, and a hybrid of the three legends mentioned above! Today, he coaches and fights out of the famous Phuket Top Team, where he trains alongside his head coach Pipa from Jockey gym.
He's also competing in the prestigious One Championship, who is now regularly hosting world class MMA fights alongside world class striking matches in Muay Thai and Kickboxing.

He's like a malevolent version of Saenchai - Saenchai with a mean streak.
When Saenchai starts playing with his opponents, he shows he's better than his opponent but in a light hearted way and looks like his intention isn't to make his opponent look bad, but just to have fun. Lerdsila on the other hand, when he starts playing with his opponent, he looks like he's saying "I'm better than you, and there's not a damn thing you can do to me."

5:10 You gotta slow this down to .25 to appreciate this kick fully. He feints a front kick to the stomach, opponent drops his guard and then switches into a roundhouse. Probably one of the most perfect kicks I've ever seen.

I tried this style when I was sparring and kept getting hit despite how fast I was manouvering and evading.

I bet you have experienced or heard of someone who experienced a slow down in time at a critical moment, like in a car accident. There are also people who were able to apply a lot more power than they should be able to, famous video on TH-cam is a mother who lifts up the side of a car to get her kid out from underneath it after an accident. So, if people can do this without prior training due to an "extreme" experience, I am fairly certain you can actually train this. For example, pushing your hands down and leaning backwards to avoid a kick to the head is literally putting you in the "extreme" situation where you have a 100% chance of getting knocked out, if you don't move fast enough, and you know that before you even start moving, so I bet you experience a slow down in time, even if it's just some of what people experience in a life threatening situation.

this is MT rule, but this type of fighting is not representative of MT typical stance and game. I appreciate the fine details of MT, IMHO MT is amazing, this guy competes in MT and he is amazing, but what he does is what he does and does not represent MT (hands down, TKD-like kicks, light & snappy kicks, not elbows and no clinch, 50/50 weight distribution etc)

He is a very smart fighter. I will note that the text at 4:50 that mentions that Lerdsila depends on speed rather than hard hits, is misleading. Force=massXacceleration, or Hard-hit is equal to muscle-massXstrike-speed . His greater speed equals hard hit, but I understand that the video might be referring to muscle mass as hard hitting.
Fun fact, the more muscle mass you or anyone has, the less speed they have because how the human body is.

"When I fight, I have fun with the game. I don't think about loss, or win. I'm not too serious with the game. That's why I have fun with the game. *I like to play with the game."* It's always so interesting to delve into the psychological aspects of fighters, sometimes even more so than their physical attributes and prowess. Many have said that fighting, in all forms, is so much more mental than physical once you reach the highest levels of any discipline, so it's interesting to learn how the mindsets of fighters aid them in the ring alongside their developed skills. Lerdsila is truly one of a kind. As always, a great vid, Lawrence. Can't wait for more.

My first loss came from being too serious about it. For two weeks I was vacant. From my family and my life in general. Everything was training and everything was winning. The game plan was to grab the first leg kick and force him to the ground. My territory. Into my corner. The bell rang and everything turn different shades of red. 30 seconds later I was in a gallatin with even an arm in.....I flaked. Luckily I understood the dynamics of this and decided that the rest of my fights was going to be "sparring sessions" with new members. And I like to have fun sparing. I'd hold guys down and sing to them. Tickle em sometimes just because. And I never hit guys to knock em out. It was for points. And fun. Wanted it to go a couple rounds. For the show.

Slamming hard strikes on an opponent is impressive in its own right. However, to control an opponent using accuracy, timing, and tactics is, to me, a level above and is what motivates me to really observe and study the art. Thank you for introducing this fighter to me.

i love his fighting style. his philosophy is that all actions done by the opponent have a reason/intent behind them, and he has become very good reading these intentions from his opponent. so in the end, the best way to describe him isnt "evasive," but instead, "genius."

I see him as more of a Pernell Whitaker of Muay Thai. Someone like Giorgio Petrosyan who uses both naturally gifted reflexes for minute evasive movements (not like Pernell and Lerdsila here), mixed with built-in defense in his strikes and overall technique, and maintaining a key foundation in adhering to defensive responsibilities is what makes fighters like Mayweather and Giorgio a slightly more robust defensive fighter.
But for those who rely on an even higher level of god-given reflexive talent that sit there with essentially their hands down and some clever angling are what I consider to be more Sweet Pea Whitaker style fighters. This guy is more like a Sweet Pea kinda fighter, to me.
And to me, Samart has elements of this evasive fighter, but more in line with an Ali ;) Not just because they're the biggest icons of their respective sport, but Samart seems to lean towards having god given reflexes, but don't shy away to be more offense-oriented and not necessarily counter-fighters by nature, at the cost of getting hit more (which sounds like Ali and Samart).

would you look into making a video of Watcharachai Kaewsamrit... 2000 Raja Fighter of the year and HE HAD BEATEN Lerdsila before ;) he flys under the the radar to "farangs" but when i talk to other Thais about Watcharachai they all call him a superstar. he had a run from 99-01 where they though he was unbeatable.. in 2000 had 14 title defenses at Rajadamnern stadium and also a muay femur style guy.. just not so flashy, but HIGHLY technical. love your work, keep doing big things

  • @shahid8545
    @shahid8545 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A couple of real basic points here. His eyes are always open and hes always loose. Never looks tight. This style takes a good amount of courage because its natrual for people to cover up when being launched at. So, you need to be able to take a punch (because you will be hit). Keep your eyes on your target. Focus on angles and strike often after hes initiated. Great video and a great craftsman.
