I don't understand a lot of his drawings too but it isn't because of ink splatters or his actual style, only because some environmental shots he will have in very extreme angles that aren't completely intelligible or when two characters with the style of the ones in Abara are close together or actually touching each other, but it's not enough to make his body of work unreadable. I only found him 2 days ago and he's one of my fav manga creators already
I'm also a fan of his early style guttural organic with environment and characters being as equally important to the story telling, it's probable as simply the natural evolution of his style, born from a need to streamline his work and to focus on the story, but it can very well be pressure from the publisher, in an attempt to appeal to a larger public and people have this tendency to buy things similar to what's already familiar to them. At the end of the day that still a business from a company with a corporatist view and NIHEI's works are published only because it sells enough.
Honestly that's what I like about Nihei's work, we can actively see him get better over time, growing as an artist, much like our own art changes and grows.
It almost looks like Blame, Biomega and Abara are for different audiences than Knights of Sidonia or Aposimz. In the later there are ton of dialogues while in the firsts ones is more "show don´t tell"
I was surprised at first too, but I quickly got used to it. My theory is that it was first a decision to be able to draw faster (He started doing cleaner in art in Knights of Sidonia) , but also he's considering the story and the setting. I think the minimalistic, high value tones fits the "snow planet" setting very well. It would not have worked in some of his previous works that were set mostly underground. A mix of practical + artistic decision, I think.
Totally agree with you. Yeah. I hope someday He will come back to some traditional inking style and blow our minds again. haha. Thanks for the comment.
He has drown SO much in his original style from Abarra to biomega, blame, noise, that I was honestly impressed and pleasantly surprised to see his obvious signature (landscape) style shining through a brand new lens. And like you said the snow planet feel did NOTHING but help immerse the reader in that new style. The man is an architectural god, he is now progressing his architectural nuance to a crazy degree, and honestly some of the structures and geometry in aposimz are FUCKED up good. He builds the world so much earlier than the characters that I'm glad that this new style does nothing but help illuminate the new space, by means of the characters themselves even. Everyone is drawn to for the landscape, the landscape is the true main character of most of his work and aposimz might be the best example of that. He was even willing to drop his long acclaimed signature inking to fit his new character..Aposimz. once again priorities the landscape over even public demand and preference.
I love blame! because after so many years seeing popular super heroes and anime. Blame looks and feels like its own aesthetic. The art is truly unique. Unhinged, inspired. Its like the sketches I did in the sides of my highschool notebooks. (If they were actually good). I love Tsutomu Nihei, and I love blame!
YEAH!! so true bro! haha. have you read DOROHEDORO? is from Q-Hayashida who was Nihei's Assistant . REALY GOOD. has a similar vibe and RAW drawing style.
As a Tsutomu Nihei fan I was wondering why the art style changed after discovering his other works after reading Blame!. I can't help but think it kind of feels unfortunate. I do agree with the art in Abara being bit hard to read sometimes, but the complex and detailed drawings are what made me a fan to begin with. Judging by some of the comments it seems like it's a mix of him getting older and his company wanting him to simplify his drawings for commercial purposes. I do hope he himself is happy with the final results and doesn't lose himself to what others expect of him.
Yeah I prefer Nihei's style from back in the day, some of the techniques I use in my drawings/sketches came from him. Every now and then I pull out Blame or Biomega to look at his art and then wound up reading them again. Though the old style may have been complex, there was still a charm to it. The kind of charm where I would go back to the panels, study them, understanding the pacing, the environments, the characters, the linework and use of ink splatter, etc. What also stood out to me also is "show don't tell", let the images tell the story with little dialogue. Having the images tell the story kind of reminded me of Gon.
I actually loved the new style, he's doing like a negative version. Plus I feel like since most of it takes place outside instead of deep in some megastructure, so that's why it's so much lighter like everything is covered in snow.
Yeah. That is a good observation. But then in the story, they go inside the structure and I miss so much the black negative stape and raw inking ha ha. Don't get me wrong, I like this style too. Cheers Sean
My hypothesis for the art change: the man is getting older. He's not the same young mangaka that could ink endlessly. The articulations of the hand begin to ache. Keeping it simple might be his solution.
Yeah! Totally. We need to adapt to the new style, it's hard to assume that the art we fell in love with at the beginning may never come back. But for the sake of Nihei's health, it's worth it
I feel the same way. I really liked his art style in Abara, so much that I picked it up just from the cover. And I don’t really buy manga ever either. I also liked his work in Blame! And knights of sidonia.
Yeah!! The covers are EPIC. I didn't like Knights Of Sidonia, too much gossip in that manga (I read the first 5 volumes). But saw the anime. haha. Cheers bro. Thanks for the comment.
Having been someone who made a 3d model of the gravitational beam emitter I can appreciate it. I tried to get references for some other objects like the motorcycle from biomega and a few other things and though I like his style a lot, many characteristics are less readable and made it impossible for me to get a good reference to make the motorcycle true as possible. Also the gravitational beam emitter changed several times throughout blame so I ended up taking the aspects I liked from all of the different versions and made what I liked, but even then, some versions were so wildly different in proportion. I felt like aposimz was definatly an evolution of his style because instead of darkness filling up his pages, it was largely light so the same mysterious void was present. I liked the concept that they were on the surface of a snowy planet so he was using whiteout instead of shadow and that made his lineart stand out more pronounced. I didn't really see it as him changing his style, just changing his subject.
Yeah. Good point there. I felt the same at the beginning. Love the snowy feel it creates. Buy them in the story they go deeper where there is no snow and I was willing to soo some more dark ink... But no. Haha. I mean. Is not bad but I'm a sucker for raw inking and there's what I miss here. Anyway is an awesome manga and I loving this "new" style. Thanks for commenting. Cheers.
Why?? Why???? Ill TELL you why, its because Nihei is NOT allowed to draw what he wants. His editors force the lighter mood, the bigger boobs , the shonen tropes. He made an entire parody manga of blame SPECIFICALLY to complain about this and people have the gall to complain about how his art has gotten worse
I was utterly baffled when reading Knights of Sidonia and the art style goes from dark, stark and heavy lines with tons of detail then about 70% through the story it transitions to soft grays, rounded shapes and almost no detail at all. The final battle that the entire manga is working towards is almost impossible to distinguish and it looks terrible. I'm totally down for creatives changing up art styles slowly over time, over with new IPs, but deep into the climax of an epic multi-volume story? Terrible move.
YEah!!! You are right about this! Thats why i didnt read KOS on paper. I read 5 or 6 volumes digitaly and then drop it. But on Aposimz there is a consistant draing style. It is super light but is consistant, at least.. anyway... cant wait to see the anime he is working on now, and some new manga if it comes out.
waited for this video for a long time now. And i do agree. i dont really like his newer work as much as i did Blame! en Biomega. not onlt did they look better but also way more polished. But i can understand why he would change his style. its much faster ans easier to draw and i would get that he wants to take it easy after almost 30 years of drawing manga. anyway keep up the good work my dude!
