  • An electric arc furnace (EAF) is a furnace that heats material by means of an electric arc.Industrial arc furnaces range in size from small units of approximately one-tonne capacity (used in foundries for producing cast iron products) up to about 400-tonne units used for secondary steelmaking. Arc furnaces used in research laboratories and by dentists may have a capacity of only a few dozen grams. Industrial electric arc furnace temperatures can reach 1,800 °C (3,300 °F), while laboratory units can exceed 3,000 °C (5,400 °F).In electric arc furnaces, the charged material (the material entered into the furnace for heating, not to be confused with electric charge) is directly exposed to an electric arc, and the current from the electrode terminals passes through the charged material. Arc furnaces differ from induction furnaces, in which the charge is heated instead by eddy currents.

    LOL.. I found directions to make a carbon-arc furnace in an old 1950s "science & engineering experiments for kids" book back in the late 80's.
    It told you to get carbon rods from old dry-cell batteries, crimp them in lightweight curtain rods, and use a terra cotta flower pot as the crucible. And the best part? Just wire it directly to your house AC mains power with a cut extension cord, using a glass ash tray, salt water, and lead fishing line weights/sinkers for a rheostat. 😂
    Of course, being the smart kid I was, and that nobody in the family smoked, I would just use a spare dimmer-knob light switch in the house workshop as that was a factory made rheostat. And would obviously be far superior to some janky thing made with an ash tray, lead sinkers & salt water.
    I did actually strike an arc, for about 5 seconds. Then the dimmer switch melted. 😅

      This is indeed an unforgettable experience, but I do not recommend using a sliding rheostat to control the power of the load. It can be used when the load power is small. The resistance will consume most of the power and cause serious heating. The use of a transformer solution is much more reasonable.

      @@free_time_g Transformer must be used simply because of safety. The rest isn't even matter.

      Hello sir, I am actually a science and technology content creator in China. This channel is only set up to take into account the global audience. A bit more code for the welding process
    Ah, a hollow rod would be best, as then de-carbonization can be achieved and a nitride hard steel can be produced... also titanium can be added with an argon flow.
    I assume you are using tungsten rod and this would be best for an add on to an existing electric furnace.. waiting for your upgrade.
    Happy grinding of the casts.

    Gute Experimente.

    Why there is so much static noise in the background 😩

    • @free_time_g
      @free_time_g  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that is the ambient sound. In theory, I can use audio processing software to reduce the noise, but based on my research, keeping appropriate white noise in the video can make people relax and calm down, because when people can hear white noise, they will psychologically feel that the whole environment is very quiet, and even feel immersive. This is why I would rather use white noise than add background music to create an atmosphere because that will make people feel bad. In recent years, this natural creative method has also been popular among TH-camrs. And you noticed this detail. I think you are also engaged in the audio-related industry, right? Because photographers will take the picture details of each work seriously, while music or sound effects engineers will focus on the sound details of your content!
