Thanks for your very informative video - the fault I had was it would intermittently power off and not power on - I replaced the battery (it was dead) I replaced Q2 ( I used a BC 846 SMD) and added the 100 ohm resistor. Pressed the power button and up it came - brilliant 🙂
Thank You! Got my DS1515+ working again. Did not know what was the real problem as the power light blinked and also alert led was blinking at the same time. So it was powering on but did not boot. Battery was 1,6V only. Tried to boot without the battery but nothing different happened. So I added 100 Ohm resistor, replaced 392 with 103 and changed the battery. After that it booted up like it should. Thanks again :)
Thanks so much. I have come into a DS1515+, my brother in law upgraded. His old unit wouldn't power on, so took the gamble on a 35.00 new power supply for my model from ebay and it worked. It powered up, I made my ethernet connection, to my router and directly to my computer and the Synology assistant cannot find it on the network. If you have had this happen, I would super appreciate some direction toward being able to use this system. I had 4 drives in the bays and whether they were in the Synology or not, no network recognition.
Either your unit is not being detected because it's not booting in all the way or you have some sort of ethernet controller chip malfunction. That failure is going to be a bit more difficult to repair, but we have fixed those in the past and will fix many more in the future I am sure. Here is a video of that repair we did on a DS412+ with ethernet port malfunction. th-cam.com/video/wBoWI3KaqNw/w-d-xo.html
@@NicksElectronicRepair Hey, wanted to get back to you on this because you assisted. I finally got it to recognize my Synology because I had the ethernet cable plugged into the back of my Arris router, I know right, stupid. What I missed was a wifi system that boosts my wifi and is faster, had ethernet ports behind that unit, that once I plugged it in, was recognized by the Synology assistant software. I was perplexed that I had all the lights blinking everywhere I should, then nothing.
I had issues with my DS1515+ rebooting, then no longer powering on. I did do the transistor replacement and the 100 ohm resistor install, and installed a brand new CR1220, which fixed my issues, and after 2 months I am back to seeing the system reboot after a couple of minutes quite consistently. I did not replace the PSU resistor, I assume that your comebacks had this issue return after a few months or so? Additionally, it looks like you sized up to a larger resistor. What is the wattage of the new resistor? (1/10,1/8. etc) The system is definitely up there in age but i am not able to replace it as of yet, and would like to make an additional backup of my data since it is being unreliable. Thanks.
No I have never seen this issue with the repair failing and having reboot problems. This is the first time anyone has said they had this failure. I recommend you do a software update to your unit. If the issue persists, it's possible one of the parts you installed is not working properly. I can't really assist further without having you send in the unit for I or my techs to look at in person and diagnose further since this is not something we have ever heard of with this unit. All of our repairs are pretty much 100% with no warranty after performing all the repairs shown in the video. As for the resistor size on the power supply, it doesn't matter as long as it's the same size or bigger as the original.
Thanks for the video! I replaced the transistor, checked the 100OHM resistor and replaced the battery, and now the unit can turn on which is a step in the right direction, however, now the blue light blinks forever. Do I need to replace the NAND flash controller (PHISON PS2251-68-5 in this case) similar to the DS1813+ video you completed?
Oh looks like you did find the video here. No the DS1813 video is different and won't apply to your unit. You replaced the transistor, battery but didn't install a resistor? Just checked it? Does this mean you already had one in there? The blinking blue light fault for your unit is fixed with the 100 ohm resistor installation. If that resistor installation does not fix the fault then you could have an issue with your RAM memory. Replace those first I would say. If the fault persists, then most likely the CPU itself has failed beyond this repair method and needs to be replaced. We can do that for you if you would like.
Hi.Looks like you know what you doing :) I got a almost the same nas just the ds218+ and it does turn on properly everty 15 startup... blinking blue led .. PSU replaced, secondary RAM removed etc.. but still blinking. I think there is something like mainboard power issue. maybe Idea?
Not a clue, we have attempted to fix them before but the DS218+ has eluded us. We haven't really had a chance to really spend a lot of time on them yet. If you find something out, let us know I would love to do a video on them.
Does not this repair is specific to the DS1515+ For your unit you may want to check out this video as it may be more closely related to your unit's issues: th-cam.com/video/xpV5ydNdxHg/w-d-xo.html
I have ds1517+ with power led vs alert led blinking in the same time, please help how to fix ( i use 100ohm resistor the alert not blinking but power led still blinking , cannot boot to DSM. Thank you !
@NicksElectronicRepair: have you experienced random crashes during normal operation causing both the alert and blue light to blink continuously? The CR1220 battery has been replaced by me before and has ~3.1V (like in your video), the 100-ohm resistor has ~99.3-ohms (factory installed by Synology) and already replaced the BC847B transistor. The device power button works as expected, it's just these random crashes that are very hard to diagnose as everything goes down (ssh, web, etc) and no logs are produced. I now have UART access for additional debugging but wondering if you've seen anything like this before on a DS1515+. Thanks!
Not really but it could be that the CPU is starting to fail to the point that the resistor fix is not enough and a new CPU is necessary. We have had to replace the CPUs on these units before. I always recommend a software update and full factory reset if possible, if the issue persists, then at least you have ruled out a software failure which means a hardware failure is the cause. You could then try new Ram, or perhaps a new power supply. These are all things I would try if the unit was here in our shop. Intermittent failures however are very hard to diagnose.
@@NicksElectronicRepair Thanks for the reply! On the UART console, there's no output but it coincides with heavier load (starting all docker containers), so I suspect the CPU is finally in its final days. Is it even worth trying to replace the 100-ohm resistor?
Hello, hope you can help me. I got a Synology DS220+ and suddenly stop working. Power adapter giving 12.3 V and led indicator always on; all NAS's leds off and without emiting any beep or sound. Hello Nicks the 10KOhm resistor in the power suply what is the power off the resistor 0,25W or 0,5W Great video i am going to try and repare my DS1515+ myself afther seeing your video
I have a DS1515+ that appears to have dead ethernet ports. The RJ45 link LEDs don't light up when plugged in to known good switches using good cables. And of course it's not pingable, doesn't show up in DHCP tables, etc... Any Idea?
It is not as common but we have done those repairs before. The ethernet chip can short out and fail. This usually happens due to external factors such as lightning strikes or power surges that affect the modem/router and travel to the device via the ethernet cable. It is also possible the chip just failed although that is rare. In order to fix this issue, you most likely will need to replace both chips. If they fail because of a lightning strike or power surge, it is also possible the main processor also needs to be replaced. If that is the case, then this repair is still doable but much more involved.
@@NicksElectronicRepair On the same day of the breakdown there was also a breakdown of the 100oh resistor. I did this resistance repair and I was able to observe that the nas turned on correctly as my other synology nas do. But now I have this second fault that without Ethernet the NAS is useless, I have even tried to find the possibility of mounting a USB WiFi, USB Ethernet or a mini pciexpres but this NAS is not prepared for this. Do you think that changing the 4-port Ethernet chip is enough?
I have a 1512+ that just got the flashing blue lights when booting up. I tried popping out my drives first, but same result over and over. I'm gonna test my PSU next, but I dont think the resister trick for the 1515 is the same fix for the 1512. Any other ideas on how to diagnose the dreaded blue light flashing on a 1512+ ? Thanks!

Hey @NicksElectronicRepair, great video thank you. I have done the repairs mentioned and I am still having an issue with my unit., wondering if you can advise. The unit shuts down when it gets too cold. The unit is kept in the garage (It used to be in an air conditioned room at work where it had the same issue). Every time the environment gets too cold (Never freezing) it just shuts off, I bring it into the house or warm it up with a hairdryer and it turns back on, back in the garage overnight (in winter) and it turns off. Is this part of the capacitor/temperature change you mention in the video do you think?
Perhaps the CMOS battery. Batteries can be affected by cold. Heat and cold also affect the resistance of capacitors and resistors, so indeed caps could be at fault, but there are hundreds on that board. It could also be a cracked solder joint on the connections between the processor and the PCB or the processor itself could also be going out. What I would recommend is using your hair dryer, only heating a very specific section of the PSB at a time. Try and narrow down where the fault is coming from. If the processor is going out and needs to be replaced, which is rare but we have had to do it a few times, we can do that for you and make a video out of it. If this is the case message us directly our contact info is in the video description. That type of work is significantly more involved and the processor chips are pricey so it does come at a premium we can discuss it further and see if it makes sense for you. -Nicholas
