    This is pretty impressive. Reminds me of the fantastic Pole Position port that runs the same logic as the arcade -- just like CannonBall does. For speed, I would turn off the enhancements like rendering more arches than the arcade; that was almost certainly left in on purpose since the missing arches give variety to convey speed and direction. In fact, you could have a demotion setting that renders only half of them, in varying deletions to continue to give the variety.

      ha ha! I have a Pi3 and it is great, but nothing beats using real Amiga hardware - even though a Vampire is not original at least you are still using an Amiga. I love emulation, but always try to use the real stuff when I can.

    • @TheGuruMeditation

      Yeah, but that is what makes the Pi and emulation cool. The real stuff is expensive (and will keep getting more expensive) so at least you can still enjoy Amiga with out breaking the bank. I recently installed Amiberry which is cool as well.

      jason andrew The best way to experience Outrun is to buy a Sega Saturn: it has the best version, better than the arcade because it run at 60fps. I paid my Saturn 25 €, 10€ for the official Sega steering wheel (in decent condition), 25 € for a modchip, some solder and a switch to do the (50/60 Hz and region mod). Total: around 60/70€

  • @lurkerrekrul
    @lurkerrekrul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Not to denigrate your work in way, but it makes me kind of sad that you need such a powerful system to run a decent version of Outrun and even then some stuff had to be sacrificed to keep it playable.
    I understand that emulation requires a lot of horsepower and that expecting anyone to write an Amiga version of Outrun from scratch is pretty much out of the question, but I can't help thinking that even a stock 7Mhz A500 would be capable of a pretty decent Outrun port if it was coded specifically for the system, and that an AGA Amiga, especially with an 030 or better would be capable of a pretty much arcade perfect port.
    While everyone agrees that the Amiga port of Outrun was horrible, most arcade ports in general on the Amiga weren't very good. Even 'decent' ones had WTF elements. Like Alien Syndrome not having parallax scrolling, jerky push-scrolling and leaving out two levels. Or the tiny bikes in Super Hang-On and the fact that they keep trying to crash into you. The Amiga was capable of so much more...

    • @remisclassiccomputers341
      @remisclassiccomputers341 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      OutRun arcade version is very demanding. A special Outrun hardware mainboard was developed for it alongside to program the game itself, this mainboard was expensive to produce in 1986.

      +lurkerrekrul : "...expecting anyone to write an Amiga version of Outrun from scratch is pretty much out of the question". Believe it or not, doing just that is a mad dream of mine and I'm slowly getting the Amiga 68k chops together...

      Yes, I think it's totally possible (making nice outrun port on vanilla A500 (with 1MB ram). I remember reading a interview from one of the guy that did port of Mortal Kombat 2 for the Amiga, and if I remember correctly, it took him 10 months (along with the rest of the team) to do it, even he is very experience with that stuff. And in my opinion, if you ignore constant disk swapping, that was excellent port, and MK2 on A500 felt in gameplay very similar like arcade version.
      So, Outrun shouldn't be impossible to do, especially if we are already having games like Lotus.

    • @turricaned
      @turricaned 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've offered my help with music for this project (beta versions here) : psychodelicacy.net/modplayer.php
      Now, each of the main tunes is around the 200k mark - and even if I got them down to about 150k it might be a stretch to get a game using them onto a vanilla A500 (i.e. 512k Chip + 512k 'Slow' RAM). I'm pretty insistent that OutRun without the proper music isn't really OutRun :). I think what we might try to start with is an AGA-type version first, see how that goes, then see if we can do it in 1MB Chip RAM (i.e. A500+ and A600).

      Also one idea for an optimization is to clip the zooming sprites when they get close to the camera. The 3DS version of OutRun does this more aggressively than the arcade machine, and it's barely noticeable.

      Have a look in olevelobjs.cpp
      Try changing the 0x200 value here to be something smaller
      if (z16 >= 0x200)
      {
      hide_sprite(sprite);
      return;
      }
      The code is duplicated multiple times over (it was like that in the original for optimization purposes, so I carried it over for clarity)
      That's one quick idea for you.

    • @ModernVintageGamer
      @ModernVintageGamer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes that works great, it get a little touchy however with the collisions of the roadside sprites if you take it too low it allows you to drive without colliding into anything :)
      ill keep tweaking it. I also noticed that the line above it ie if (z16 < 4) allows you to adjust the draw distance of the sprites. that may help also.

    Please re-attempt Street Fighter 1 (1987), that was my heart broken right there when Tiertex coughed up the crud they did with that game, I'd really like to see if the Amiga could do a reasonable conversion of SF1.

    • @kaisersoymilk6912
      @kaisersoymilk6912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly could but SF1 it's not worth it in my opinion. In fact, the Amiga 1200 could have had the best home version of Street Fighter II, better than that of any computer or console of the time (even better than the arcade in some aspects, like audio) if only the Amiga developers had made an actual effort.
      Don't believe me? Watch this: th-cam.com/video/33kH9DdNznA/w-d-xo.html

      @@kaisersoymilk6912 Only issue is I hate SF2 and would never be interested in how good a version is, I would just like to see a better version of SF1 on Amiga just to see what was possible if out the hands of Tiertex.

    • @kaisersoymilk6912
      @kaisersoymilk6912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZEUSDAZ Wow, that's strange, I know it's a matter of taste but SF is objectively vastly inferior to SFII.
      I get the nostalgia though, I played SF a lot in the arcades (in fact, it was the only arcade game I could finish due to how unbalanced it was: special moves were basically cheating).

    • @ZEUSDAZ
      @ZEUSDAZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kaisersoymilk6912 I just loved the speed of the game, the "sudden death killer instinct" feel of it, I loved the tunes as they were far more catchier than those in SF2 and the characters were drawn so much nicer with convincing skin tones unlike the comic characters of SF2, SF2 to me was not only too slow and easy it was milked beyond belief to the point of exhaustion and I got totally sick of it, fun in 2 player mode I guess but left me totally unsatisfied in 1-player mode that I went straight back to the faster killer feel of SF1 within days.

    • @ZEUSDAZ
      @ZEUSDAZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaisersoymilk6912 P.S, this is what I mean regarding that "sudden death" excitement feel that gave me my fix, the speed was insane compared to SF2,...SF2 was more "I'll just pop out for a coffee and finish the round when I get back" feel: th-cam.com/video/__LzxXJPH7c/w-d-xo.html

    Fantastic work and the fact that true Arcade versions can be made to work with a Vampired Amiga is incredible, why isn't this being done to more games (or am I missing out?). The one thing I will say about this particular mod is while I'm not too bothered with the music being changed, the missing sound effects (engine, skidding) really take away from the immersiveness. It's been a year and a half since this video, so Is there still work being done to improve/update this mod?

    Literally 2 days ago I was lying in the bath thinking that if I was rich I would commission a god-level programmer to write a port of outrun on the amiga, the way it should have been done originally.
    This video is great, but the fact it needs custom hardware enhancements, makes it quite different to what I was imagining.

    Cannonball can be configured to reduce the number of sprites to show incomplete bridges on the Gateway level. This was caused by a sprite display limit on the original hardware. Has this been enabled or disabled on the Amiga port? I'd rather see incomplete bridges (like the original arcade machine) and backgrounds than have whole bridges and no backgrounds.

    Extremely impressive! Though using the Vampire 2 chip does feel a little like cheating. Technically it's still an Amiga, but you don't get that satisfaction of saying "Look what we can achieve on an Amiga" when it's not the original hardware. Don't get me wrong though, this is very impressive and cool.
    As for the music, if I had the time I would make you the arcade-accurate MODs myself as it's the kind of thing I love doing and I adore the OutRun music - I did it for the Spectrum (in 3 channels). I know I'm not going to have time though.

      @Svein Are Karlsen The difference is that you could buy a 68030, 68040 or 68060 accelerator back in the 90's, but you couldn't get the FPGA that Vampire uses.

    • @rebeccaschade3987
      @rebeccaschade3987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Svein Are Karlsen I wasn't saying one this is "better" or "more pure" than another. But running an Outrun arcade perfect port on modern hardware isn't an achievement. I can do that on a cheap Raspberry Pi. Vampire is a full single-board computer for installation into an A600. It's not technically speaking Amiga at all. It doesn't NEED any part of the A600 other than for power delivery. It emulates the entire chipset in hardware using the FPGA. So an Amiga game that REQUIRES a Vampire isn't technically speaking an Amiga game.
      That being said. No beef with Vampire or this Outrun port. It looks solid.

    Will it run on non-apollo Amigas, like A1200+turbo (030/040/060) or A600 with Furia (020/882FPU)?

      technically it will run on 030 or higher, but you need RTG. There is no support for AGA/ECS at this time

      i use AmiDevCPP (GNU C/C++) and use WinUAE to debug. There also some .asm code as well, i use vbcc for that

      There is, I should imagine, a lot of scope for Amiga specific re-implementation, but that way lies madness.
      Though, being based on a twin 68k CPU Outrun would seem to be uniquely well suited to such shenanigans.

    • @TheTurnipKing
      @TheTurnipKing 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suffice to say that running unmodified 68000 code isn't likely to be a whole lot of help on the speed front.

    • @TheTurnipKing

      Which is, of course, the point of Cannonball itself: To reimplement the game logic in a portable way.
