    I get nostalgic watching these videos makes me want to be inside of a 109 snatching the Block loading the round putting in the charge bag lifting the arm closing the block putting the primer in and hooking on the lanyard and boom love love love it for about 10 min then my out of shape 53yo body would say ok old man enough for you lol

      Man that was my mos for 5 yrs station in schweinfurt Germany I've been out since 2012 man I be waking up in the middle of the night out of bed sometimes imagining I'm still loading rounds

      when the guy puts the point on, he puts a box on and shows the commander. What is that he is doing.

      @@sedgie08 that’s called an EPIAFS that means the point (fuze) is electronic and that box is setting the time on it the time is set so that depending on the round it can burst in the air and expel the contents

    I've seen them never been inside. I didn't know that they used a separate powder bag or fired it with a lanyard! Old stuff but good stuff, probably keep 20 of these running for what 1F-35 costs. A lotta good bang for the buck!

    The goddamn primer has always been the weakest link in the 109 system. Slows everything down.

      In this exercise, they're putting the fuses on themselves. That's what is taking time; but, you must practice for any contingency.

      Actually………… these guys are a little sloooow. My crew would have demolished these guys in time. But they were having problems with their breech closing properly due to tension adjustment.

      Pretty darn slow. Not enough assholes and elbows. Very little communication. Probably why there isn't much motivation. We always shot as if lives were at stake. The longer it took to do your part, more friendlies were put at risk of not coming home.

    Why that's a mere pop-gun compared to the old M-110A2 8-inch SP Howitzer that I was on in Germany during the early 80s!! Our gun rocked back on the spade when we fired a round.

      It just depends on the powder charge. If your using the full charge than make sure everything you have is tied down and the drive better have a good lock on that brake. Also if your using the highest charge than theirs pegs (can’t remember what they’re called) in the back that we drop and lock so that the paladin won’t move.

      Fired red bags in DS and yeah it rocked just like the 110's in Germany. Don't lean on anything for sure you'd get rocked as well.

    What's taking them so long... we fired 3 a minute back in the 80's, of course our rounds we fused, and they were PD fuses

      +Shoeg4zer in all modern electrical militar systems theres usually a manual mode too. It needs to work in battle conditions.

      they also have an excalibur round that is GPS guided and that is how they set the target location--only $80K per round

      155 is not a fixed ammunition type (like on the 120mm in the Abrams)...plus they have to put in and set the fuse, ram it home, place powder charge, then prime the breech...

      Fuze setter, presumably for a time fuze, although this device is way after my FA time. They were firing the M107 HE round, which has been around since the 50's but apparently is still used for training.

    Time to let the Paladins go and buy the PZH 2000 from the Germans. They would have about 10-12 or more rounds downrange in this amount of time and a lot further to boot.

    Is that cord at the very end some kind of safety precaution for training type firing or this is a thing for real battles? I can’t imagine fiddling with it when enemy is shooting at you

      Most american artillery pieces have that lanyard for safety and verification. Theres a method to the madness everything the army does.

      And also that's why your crew and chief drill into the heads on every steps. Give these guys a 15 round mission and im sure they'll be sending rounds non stop

      It's a real thing. Some of us that got caught finger popping, cheated and clamped the hook over on the lock. Then it was just pick up, wait for fire and pull. Repeat until rounds complete.

    does anyone know what MOS this is? because i know 13b is cannon crewmember but im not sure if it goes in the paladin or the stationary howitzer (with wheels)

      Tactical Tyler As a 13B you will be on either a M109 M777 or a M119 it depends what duty station you get. Heavy units like Hood, Riley, Carson places like that tend to be on paladins. If you go light to like Drum, Campbell or Bragg it’s all m119 and sometimes m777.
