This is such a beautiful review and appreciation of the film - I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your take. 'Twisted but gentle' is a great way of thinking about Rollin in general. Like you said, the English title is misleading, but I take the French 'La vampire nue' to mean something like 'The Vampire Exposed' or 'Revealed', which seems more thematically relevant to the film. The comparison between this and the Eleusinian Mysteries is super interesting - bringing out the cultic element of cult cinema. Also, the fact that you cosplayed a Rollin character officially makes you one of the most awesome people on the internet.
That’s a great idea. I have reviewed twins of evil, but I think a whole Karnstein vid would be great. I have a vampire dress that might be perfect for this.
Love the outfit Katie, thanks for going the extra mile, you look amazing. I was very surprised and delighted when I got a name check, it was a bit SURREAL. I think you gave the film a fair review and I am glad you enjoyed it. It was a good idea to set the right expectations for people who haven't seen this. Anyone expecting a sleazy horrorfest is likely to be disappointed unless they also like surrealism and the works of the painter Paul Delvaux in particular as Rollin was a big fan of his. I can see lots of people suggesting watching Rollin's film 'Fascination' next and I wouldn't disagree as it includes the awesome Brigitte Lahaie in the cast (she appears in about 6 of his films). My personal recommendation would be 'Shiver of the Vampire', his 3rd film, as it does contain actual vampires, and has some very iconic scenes, and is if anything even more beautiful and gothic to look at. It only has one of the Castel twins though. Love your channel and I enjoy your obvious love for the films you review.
Re watched this morning when I saw the thumbnail on YT, Definitely a different take on vampire movies but fun none the less, and the vampire girl is Lovely and the twins were interesting in their costumes! Your portrayal in make up and props are Excellent as usual! Did notice that one must be naked to give blood though! Great review Katie!!!
I have not seen a Rollin's film in years, but I saw a few. I think it is ironic, to take seriously a movie that does not take itself seriously. This movie sounds like a cross between Short Night of Glass Dolls, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Thanks for the great review, I am going to check this out.
What a great review! Good job Katie. Beautiful nonsense is the perfect descriptor. I think Requiem for a Vampire also fits into this category but is much more fun, perhaps all Rollin films do. However, Fascination is a bit of an exception and is easily my favourite.
As Rollin himself said, "The images and dialogues of my films attach themselves to the idea that they can become, or are, a cinema of the imaginary. For me, a cinema which permits these meanderings is the only real cinema". When it comes to Rollin's beguiling and enigmatic films, I'd say that the style often is the substance. Though, that said, there is an anti-capitalist subtext to The Nude Vampire. It might not be very well fleshed out, but it's something that reviewers at the time picked up on (Cahiers du Cinema called the film "A half-baked political delusion"). The titles of Rollin's films are often sleazier than the films themselves because French distributors had zero interest in horror films and so the films were marketed towards the "sex circuit" instead. Great review. More vampires please. Nice cat.
You mention Franco, I always saw parallels between the pair, in that they both excelled in their own wildly differing take on the "dreamstate" in cinema. Must recommend The Iron Rose here.
You really need to see Fascination next. It's my favourite Rollin and I think you will like it. Maybe also you could do a video on all 3 of Hammers Karnstein trilogy (The Vampire Lovers, Lust for a Vampire and Twins of Evil). I know you have seen the first and third of these. Be warned though, the second - Lust - is pretty godawful (even worse than the first which, despite a great performance from Ingrid Pitt, is a fairly weak entry in the Hammer canon)
Hello Katie. Don’t know how I missed this poll. Oh well. I love The Nude Vampire but I have to say my favourite Rollin film is Requiem for a Vampire Speaking of Rollin (and Franco) I’d like to recommend two books for your reading pleasure: Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin and Jess Franco: The Worlds most dangerous film maker.
I sort of accidentally became a Rollin fan. Back in the days of video rental shops, I used to rent a lot of random movies, and at some point I started noticing certain Euro-sleaze films that I was renting had a particular vibe. Doing a little research, I started to figure out that the films of Jean Rollin in particular captured a vibe I liked, a kind of dream-like quality. Figuring that out could be a challenge, as he worked under so many different names, to the point where, if I remember right, there are movies that aren't officially credited to him under any of his known pseudonyms, but widely suspected to be his work. I'd probably seen 6 or 8 of his movies before I even knew his name, or knew to seek out his films. I don't love all of it. There are definitely times when stuff happens that feels like the producers stepped in and saying, "we need more gore or an SA scene" because that's what French & Italian film of the time seemed to need to get international sales. I get the sense that he didn't actually like graphic sex or violence (implied violence and nudity were OK), but that was what the European film industry was mostly doing in the late 60s through the early 80s, and he still wanted to work. Again, I think it's the dream-like nonsense plot and atmosphere that captures me. I can watch someone walk around a castle and randomly move a few objects while spouting half-baked philosophy for like 90 minutes and it's almost meditation or something. Anyway. Two of my favorites from Rollin are Fascination and The Night of the Hunted. Though both are on the grimmer, nastier side, if memory serves, than some of his gentler stuff.
Yeah, it's hard to pin down Rollin films. His vampire movies, I think, are his most charming. He's a visual story teller. I love the Iron Rose and Fascination.
Great review as always. You really articulate your thoughts in such a lovely personal way, i really enjoy your stuff katy. My favourite rollin movie is shiver of the vampire its fantastique !!One day you’ll get your castle!
Nice take on the movie. Regarding this movie on Netflix; their physical library was far more robust than streaming 12 years ago. Im pretty sure I rented Nude Vampire on dvd sometime btw 2007 - 2010. Streaming titles did improve after about 2013 for a while.
I've seen about a dozen of Rollin's movies. This one is good (and I think your review is very fair as to both content and quality) but Shiver of the Vampires is better (it has actual vampires in it) and Fascination is his best (even though its vampires aren't really vampires). Thanks for the costuming. I love the orange sheet, and the blood. You definitely need a candelabra if you review Shiver...
I loved this film. Rollin's vibe is just so specific, i've never found it anywhere else. It also gave me Eyes Wide Shut vibes, but with a much more optimistic ending...
This movie is on TH-cam, and I had to watch it after this review. Your spoiler free review is excellent. My only addendum is it does earn the nude title. there is full frontal female nudity, plenty of boobs and the vampire is wearing a shear dress. It is an art film that also appealed to the grindhouse. There is gold in them their boobs, and that is why the movie was financed. I viewed the movie as dead serious, but I can see why you got a laugh out of it. It was a good watch, thanks for recommending it.
I think this is the film where the two beautiful twins take one of the least convincing falls down the stairs you will ever see. It reminds me of Tim Conway's fall down the stairs on The Carol Burnett Show. That being said, Vampire Nue is quite an interesting film. I saw it many years ago however. Possibly it might be very hard to sit through the whole thing today. Tubi has a few Rollins. Don't watch Grapes of Death. Grapes of Death is a complete waste of time. I would love to see Vampire Nue again. I hope it streams somewhere.
Hi katie.havent been on in awhile.wasnt feeling to well.anyway,I love your channel.your reviews are so good.and fun.yea,I wanted to buy this movie.i don't no now lol ..is the movie dubbed.by the way looking nice as always lol,you do look like that lady in the movie.take care....
It’s uncanny how you nail these reviews so perfectly. Your observation that the film was not really sleazy, sexy or had much in the way of nudity is true. How about reviewing a film or films that were in line with the Nude Vampire but delivered more sleaze and especially nudity and sex?
Her pet cat is very cute and adorable. 🐱🐈🐱🐈🐱🐈🐱🐈🐱🐈

Speaking of twins and vampires, I hope Twins of Evil is on your list as the finale of the Karnstein vampire trilogy from Hammer.
She has done that about two years ago.
That’s a great idea. I have reviewed twins of evil, but I think a whole Karnstein vid would be great. I have a vampire dress that might be perfect for this.
@@KatieoftheNight I look forward to seeing that analysis, Katie.
Count Yorga is worth a watch 👍

Its not nonsense in the context of 1970s counter culture. The ideas behind it are probably nonsense but it does make sense from its own perspective.

I do love Lust for a Vampire, it's not great but the cast lifts it to heights it may not deserve but it saves if for me.
I'm all about the psychological state that films induce.

Thank you for reviewing nude vampire. I just watched it and love it!❤
Oh yay! I’m so glad you liked it too!
Thanks for reviewing some of my favorites! If you haven't already reviewed it, 'The Fearless Vampire Killers" is one of my favorite films.
You are so welcome! I haven’t seen that one yet 👀
I just watched Dracula's Fiancée & I was super impressed, must watch more Jean Rollins!

An excellent review, Katie.
Please can you review these two Vampire films, "Daughters of Darkness" 1971 and the "Blood Splattered Bride" from 1972.
I definitely intend to revisit daughters of darkness and do a review! And I haven’t watched blood spattered bride yet but I def want to!
@@KatieoftheNight I'll keep my eye out for both of those, both are excellent films, in my opinion.
Daughters of Darkness is beautifully shot. There is solid transfers of it.
I've yet to enter the vampire world of Jean Rollin. I've only seen his film Living dead girl.
The Rollin movie to watch is probably Fascination
That is what I hear… I guess I’ve been saving it for a special day or something 😅
I like your show thanks the original bloodrayne is one of my best vampire movies
Dracula AD is sooo good.
I agree! I tend to favor modern-day vamp movies I think, rather than the period ones!

Hi James! Hope you’re feeling better. The movie does have an English dub. It’s actually here on TH-cam at the moment if you wanna try it!

Didn't he also make Zombie Lake? Thats quite a movie.
I reposted this to r/JeanRollin.
Oh my!! Redditors are scary! But thank you so much 🤗
I like really trippy psychedelic surreal films lol
You look like you stepped out of a Jean Rollin film! Cheers!
Thank you!!! I tried 😁
With GREAT SUCCESS!!!
Fantastique lol
This is one of Rollin's weakest efforts. Fascination, Living Dead Girl and Lips of Blood are way better 👍
