  • This simple trick can grow bigger garlic bulbs at harvest! Growing garlic is hard for southern growers with mild winters, because garlic needs a long cool season to grow large heads. This trick adds chill hours to your seed garlic so you can grow garlic heads larger in warm winters!
    This tip will help gardeners growing garlic in warm climate areas where garlic heads don't become large due to the mild winters and a lack of cool winter weather. These tips will help southern gardeners that grow garlic in the south and grow garlic in Florida, as well as other areas of the world with warm winters.

    You always produce such great videos….here’s a friendly FYI to help you take it to the next level (at least as far as garlic is concerned). An individual clove planted in the ground multiplies itself into a segmented mass of cloves know as a BULB. The term HEAD is associated with above ground crops such as: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce.

    Excellent tip! Can’t grow hard-neck types at all here in So. Cal (zone 10a). Inchelium Red variety usually yields the largest heads and I think planting the largest cloves helps with size as well (non-scientific, just an observation). I planted garlic yesterday for April-May harvest.

      I would've thought that hardneck wouldn't grow well here, either, but Spanish Roja has been an outstanding performer. You may want to give that hardneck a try. If you order it very early, say around Labor Day, and stick it in the fridge for 2 months before planting it in the roughly November 1st timeframe, I bet you'd be surprised. I really can't recommend that variety highly enough. I get far more Arctic outbreaks than you do, but I don't think our "average" temperature from December-January are that far off. We average a high of 55-65 December 1 thru Feb 1, with lows around 35-45 on average in that timeframe. We just get a significant cluster of nights in the 28-35 degree range in that timeframe, which you probably don't get a whole lot of.
      I have to remember that the West Coast is strange because they get their coldest days in December, whereas pretty much everywhere else sees their coldest weather in late January, so you probably have to put your garlic in extra early to get chill.

    I love you channel I enjoyed the banana series quick question about the garlic I had to bed planned out to buy 10 two of them but currently it is south facing but the fence and the neighbors house is kind of blocking it out for Sunshine can I still plan my garlic there I should be having sun in the spring and definitely in the summer? Thank you for all your information I probably have to chat you up regarding some figs I haven't been able to grow any figs in the last 2 years but that's a separate question for another day.

    • @2MinuteGardenTips
      @2MinuteGardenTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are going to need at least 6 hours of sunshine a day when the tops emerge. If you don’t think the leaves will emerge until the sun gets high enough, you may be ok. However, they don’t do well without a lot of direct sunshine. 6 hours is the minimum for “full sun.”

    Brown Turkey and Chicago Hardy Figs - I have pinched them both in May and they still don't ripen before Oct. I have plenty of figs on the brown turkey as of 9/12/22, I'm in zone 7B

    • @2MinuteGardenTips
      @2MinuteGardenTips  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Zone 7B isn't necessarily a good indicator for growing figs. For example, Zone 7's in the PNW are totally different than east coast Zone 7's. Where I lived in Philadelphia Zone 7a is much easier to grow figs than Zone 8b Seattle, because the Philadelphia area gets lots of hot days in the summer. Figs need persistent temperatures in the 80's or warmer to ripen very well. If you're pinching in May, I think you're telling me you live in a place with very cool summers. You may want to play tricks like put down black weed barrier in on the ground around your trees to attract heat, sticking the containers up against a south-facing brick wall, or finishing your figs off in a greenhouse if you're growing them in pots.

    Great information as always! Which garlic do you grow in your area, I live in the Raleigh area, which do you think would be the best for me to plant.

    • @2MinuteGardenTips
      @2MinuteGardenTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I have grown Spanish Roja hardneck in my area twice, and both times it produced excellent garlic. The heads weren't huge, but the cloves were nice and the flavor is *outstanding.* I would think a hardneck wouldn't do well in Wilmington, but it did great, so it will do even better in Raleigh. I highly recommend that variety, and I'm growing it yet again for the 3rd year in a row because it's just too good.
      Two seasons ago I also grew Lorz Italian softneck, and it was an excellent performer with very strong flavor. I waited too long to order garlic last year, and one of the few remaining softneck's in stock was Early Italian, which I planted, but not one bulb came up. There must've been a vernalization problem, which is why I'm refrigerating this year, so I can't comment on that variety. This season, I am trying a softneck called Loiacono. I'll see how that performs.

    Good information! I’m in 8a and usually get small bulbs even when I plant in the fall. If I refrigerate my garlic, do I plant in late winter or early spring?

    • @2MinuteGardenTips
      @2MinuteGardenTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would still plant your garlic at the "normal" time that you usually do. The difference is, you would want to order your garlic earlier than normal and store them in the refrigerator for 4-8 weeks to vernalize them. I usually plant my garlic in early November, so I ordered the bulbs a month ahead of schedule to prepare for this.

    • @vp4981
      @vp4981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I’m going to vernalize them anyway before planting--maybe just a bit late but, hopefully, they’ll still grow okay.
