I'd put Puskas in the 1950s, when Hungary went 4 years unbeaten, and Puskas kept that 1.0-ish goals / game ratio for Budapest Honved & the national team.
I would put Jose Leandro Andrade for 1920s...winning local league, Copa America twice, Olympic twice and the first ever World Cup in 1930..he is the best ever cdm of all-time debatable with Matthaus..
In my personal opinion, based on individual skills, I choose: Best Striker of all time : Ronaldo (Brazilian) Best Forward of all time : Cruyff Best Middle-fielder of all time : Zidane Best Defender of all time : Beckenbauer Best Goalkeeper of all time : Casillas (at his prime) Best Complete player of all time : De Stefano Special mentions to all the rest (Messi, Platini, Maradona, Best, Eusebio, Puskas, Pele, Rummenigue, Van Basten, Ronaldinho, Romario, Baggio, Figo, Zico, Garincha, Yashin, Kahn, etc.)
I love the fact that you had Messi and Ronaldo together. We can argue about who is better between the two, but the fact is, there is no separating the two in terms of their standing in the game and that is why they are so great. Never have we seen two of the best footballers ever compete like these two in the same era. Never. And we will probably never see it again either
It’s a shame that Argentina and Portugal never played a meaningful game against one another during this era. I feel that it gives it an additional level to a rivalry.
Arthur Friedenreich played in 1920's, counting unoficially games, he scored more than 1000 goals, he's just a legend. 1930's is Meazza in my opinion, with honorable mentions for Leonidas da Silva (bycicle kick inventor) and Bican. 1940's had Obdulio Varela, Zizinho, Valentino Mazzola, Stanley Mathews and Ademir Menezes. But in my opinion Varela is the best of those by far.

Great job! Excellent work! Learned a lot, especially before the 1950s. Have you read biographies of South American players like J: M. Moreno, Leonidas da Silva & A. Erico? It is a hard chore to pinpoint just one footballer for a decade. Sometimes some players' time overlaps. Take for example Pele. From 1958-1970 he was unmatched. Then he played for a couple of more years but was not at his peak. In the 60s,, He admired Best, called the fifth Beatle, who was very talented like Matthews but was not as consistent. At an early age, he won at the club level all the major trophies. Eusebio also appeared and fought for first place in his squad against Pele´s Santos. Beckenbauer was in the 1966 German Squad until 1974. Unfortunately, Cruyff appeared and became the top player for the first half of the decade displacing him but Franz won his two Ballon d'Or. Then came Kempes and in 1978, overshadowed him. His years in Spanish football were amazing and was a superstar. His professional and modest attitude was different from G. Best, Ronaldhino, or Maradona. Probably the reason why he is many times underrated. Kevin Keegan with 2 Ballon d'Or was the top player and competed for the first spot. Therefore neither Cruyff nor Backenbauer were number one at this point. At this same time, young Maradona just like Pele dazzled in Argentino Juniors in the last part of the 1970s. Furthermore, in 1979, he led the Argentine team to the junior world cup. When he went to Europe, the number one was Platini, and both became rivals, especially after the transfer to Italy. Until his third cup appearance in 1990, Maradona was undisputed in the 1980s especially in his early years at Napoli making this small team the top one in Serie A. Rud Gullut and Marco Van Basten both in Milan and the national dutch team out shadowed him at the end of the decade. Van Basten became one of the three players to win 3 Ballon d'Or. The third in 1992. Here is where it is more difficult to define a player for a complete decade. This is confirmed by the multiple players that had won the Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo is the top player in the second half of the decade but Zidane emerged in 1998 to become the number one. The brazilian still was at the top confirmed in 2002 winning the World Cup with Brazil and the Balon d'Or. In the early 1990s, we have Roberto Baggio (Ballon d'Or 1993), Hristo Stoichkov (Ballon d'Or 1994), and George Weah (Ballon d'Or 1995). The last year before Messi-Ronaldo took the lead is 2007 with Kaka. So to say that the complete decade belongs to Zidane is not exact. He had Rivaldo, Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldhino, and Kaka as his contemporaries at the same level or depending on the year, ahead of him. He could have been crowned in 2006, especially for his performance at the world cup (parallel was Modric). This year, after the world cup, there is no doubt that Messi is superior to Ronaldo but no one can deny that they have owned these last 15 years. They cover a decade and a half! Much more than expected With all of this in mind, although it is convenient to classify by decade, it will cost you precision and truthfulness.
Ronaldo (il fenomeno) was the best only during 2 seasons in the 90's, (97 and 98) before that he was too young and didn't take parte in high level matches (he never played a single minute during 94 world cup) and after that he got injured and came back in 2002, winning the world cup. During the 90's we saw amazing players like van basten, baggio, gullit, maldini and you didn't bother to mention any of them. Also Zidane was surely a player of the 90's scoring 2 goals in the world cup final and winning the balon d'or, while he only played in the first half of the 2000's.
R9 was the best player of the 90s by a country mile. He was clearly the best in the World from 95/96 to around 99, when he got injured. Baggio, Laudrup and Romario take the next spots after R9. Van Basten was great too, but he did not play at all after his anckle injuries in 92, so he's not really a 90s player. Gullit was also at his best in the 80s, when he won the Ballon D'Or. Maldini is a defender, so he doesn't belong in the conversation. As for Zidane, he's the second most overrated player in history, after Messi. He was never the best in the world in the 90s. R9 was the best player in the 98 World Cup. Zidane did nothing apart from those 2 headers in the final. He did not deserve the Ballon D'Or in 98.
@@michaeltrumph121 I tend to agree to almost everything you said. R9 is surely one of my fav players ever, during his peak he was probably the best player in football history. I made the post only to say that before 96 he was nobody (he only played 1 year in PSV and got injured too) and after the 98 final never recovered till summer 2002, he didn't come back as the god he was but he was still a solid player who deserved his other balon d'or.

Much more than expected
With all of this in mind, although it is convenient to classify by decade, it will cost you precision and truthfulness.
@@michaeltrumph121 Well, on Ronaldo' Prime, Baggio was better than him on Seasons 97-98 (playing by Bologna) and 98-99 playing together on Internazionale Milano. I am Italiano and I see It alive on San Siro.

And I liked Baggio too, but he was not better than R9.
@@michaeltrumph121 Well, on Ronaldo' Prime, him never wins a Série A Italiana (always loses to Juventus of Zidane and Del Piero) or Champions League (even with Galácticos Madrid or Strong Internazionale 98-99), loses Olympiks of 96 and World Cup of 98. Only scores around 450 Goals. But the Italianos was stupids to call him "the Fenômeno" without him wins lots of National Leagues, Champions or scoring more than at less 50 Goals by Seasons.

Your comment reeks of ignorance and cluelessness.
First of all, the Brazilian league was the best in the world back then.
Second of all, Santos was not a big team until Pele came along. He made them a force. And he destroyed all the top European teams. In fact, Pele's goal ratio against European teams is better than against Brazilian teams.
Brazil had also never won a World Cup until Pele came along.
It does not matter how good Pele is compared to modern footballers, all that matters is what he did in his own era. That's how you compare players from different generations, by what they have achieved.
Dixie Dean is so forgotten today, yet he was so good, and all this is coming from a Liverpool fan
