Good grief, he kicked off his concert with one of my all time favorites Fly with the Wind. The original was SO exhilarating.
Bill Frisell and Mister Bartz set a great counterpoint to McCoy!!
Good God ! What can I say about Bill Frisell ? Just watch this video and see how HAPPY he is listening to McCoy, then his comping for Gary Bartz. His amazing solos are just part of the stream of him giving himself 110% ALL of the time.

I like the inclusion of Gary Bartz who is so_under_the_radar imho.
Incredible ensemble performance. Our man Bill Frisell be holding it DOWN. He has a concept and style all his own; impressionistic rather than post-bop spewing of endless sonic spaghetti which seems to be the norm for guitar. Gary Bartz since the late 1960s has been an under-recognized force on alto. His SOUND is great and again, he's more of an impressionist although some of his lines are intense but never to the point of post-Coltrane over-blowing intense. McCoy Tyner; enough said about the torch bearer of 1960s Conscious Jazz. Note on production: Germans know how to do live recording. This show even has it down to subtly introducing audience applause into the mix. It might be down to them fine microphones they engineer over there. Interesting that Tyner is playing a Steinway rather than Bosendorfer, the latter probably more suited to European classical rather than jazz. Sorry to run on like this, but thanks for posting this concert. This is art that will help defeat the 21st Century Imperial Vampires that are sucking the blood out of world civilization.
I think I am gonna steal the "endless sonic spaghetti" phrase, as it describes quite well how I feel about the guitar playing of now, me being a guitarist as well, I am trying to stay away from that form of mostly meaningless playing, and discovering Frisell was I think a step in the right direction for me. But I've seen lately some kinda well known guitarist embarcing some of Bill's ideas. Jakob Bro(maybe too much like Bill) Julian Lage and Gilad Hekselman they all seem to be drawing some inspiration from Bill which might mean that all is not lost for guitar, at least for now.

@Dennis O'Neill I like your observations. I have sampled Cecil Taylor. What I have found is like with so many in his genre, I can't just passively listen to him. I have to join him on his explorations. That is not always easy. One has to allow one's self to dispense with preconceptions of what music is and even what constitutes structure. Indeed, in some instances I have found structure in some of Mr. Taylor's music. I think that listening to 'free' jazz requires one to become unshackled to find order in what initially seems to be chaos
@Dennis O'Neill Yeah, it's definitely not noise. Yet, I admit that he isn't one that I'd listen to frequently. And as far as people that are at the top of my list to attempt imitating that would definitely be Mr. Tyner B-)
Frisell doesn't tear it up. Rather, he is much more lyrical
than most modern players....he eschews a lot of meaningless scales/
modal exercises in favor of well placed notes and air between them....very refreshing.
totally! was talking about frisell last night to a couple guys who had never heard of him, I had a very hard time calling him a jazz guitarist, or insert-idiom-here guitarist of anything but just great music!
What an eclectic musician Frisell is! His range of musical interests is astonishing. Nice to see some great names from the past playing here. Tyner, Gravatt and Bartz continue to make great music. Thank you for this wonderful upload.

Yes, Gary Bartz seems to go by unnoticed to anyone outside of jazz. And that's in spite of the fact that he's been a session musician on some r&b recordings
McCoy one of the best jazz pianists in the world.....just love him.
He is one who I try to imitate when I practice. I have yet to develop the muscle memory to get his chord voicings right every single time
And I just can’t believe the audience - this case In Europe, other times America, or wherever- they sit and politely enjoy. Shoot, I’d be dancing, listening to this fantastic music!
Bill Frisell must be one of the most versatile musicians on the planet-he can play with anyone! It's nice to hear Gary Bartz -he was great with Miles and he still cuts it. The rhythm section are marvelous. I loved Gravatt with Weather Report so it's wonderful to catch up with him. A really good upload-thank you!

RIP McCoy...another to 2020, we have big gloves to fill. Had the pleasure of hearing you a few times, shook your big hands at Ricks in Chicago. McCoys biggest part of my jazz lp collection. "Inner Voices" I love too...thank you.
This is an interesting band, No? I love how unique each of these players are by themselves, yet, together they seem to really work in a very compellingly way.
Saw this show in Rome in that same year. Unforgettable.
Fantastic! Mr. Tyner and Mr Rollins. I A pair I'd choose to draw to anytime. Thank you. I've never had the great pleasure of seeing Mr. Rollins in person but I did get to see Mr. Tyner & his group at the Keystone Corner in San Frisco in about 1970. It was a thrill.
Not Sonny though it looks like him. The great Gary Bartz on alto. He and McCoy were tight, tight, tight. Gary kind of ran the band, naming the tunes and introducing the group members there towards the end of McCoy’s touring days. It has to be said that McCoy still had a lot of fire in his later appearances. Saw this group minus Bill and they brought it.
A magical set from an iconic group of musicians although Gerald Cannon was new to me. Wonderful to hear Bill Frisell playing with guys like McCoy, Gary and Eric-all of them heroes of my jazz youth-and to this day. A great upload-thank you.
This is nice; just magnificent! What happened to the new and present generation of music makers that lost touch with this and other forms of real and organic music-which is what I and my generation grew up with-and I suppose, in retrospect, took for granted..I mean, who knew, about 40 years ago(apart from I and a few others)that it would come to this, which is basically the DEATH of real, organic and creative music-the kind that used to be so prevalent in the time of the 1930s to the 1980s-before it all started to FADE AWAY? 7-1-22.

A grand performance by an absolute legend and one of my top three favorite jazz pianists of all time (the other two being Bill Evans and Thelonius Monk). I think Bill Frisell held his own admirably and Gary Bartz is an under appreciated talent on alto. But one thing Gary, ...................I’ve got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!
Listening to this I started thinking about my old buddy ... Alberto Roman, who is himself an amazing artist!

Tyner learned how to integrate a whole tone sound with a modal sound, creating music of great beauty.
He is avant_garde and at the same time accessible B-)
like his mentor Coltrane he used extensively the division of the octave in equal parts...if you divide it for whole tones you obtain the whole tone scale and that's why you you hear that sound..but it's more than playng the scale...if you use quartal groupings starting from each grade of the whole tone scale you use notes that are not part of the scale while retaining the flavour of the six note scale..sorry for my english i'm italian

Is that Christian McBride on bass? Superb, even monstrous playing! Best Tyner bassist since Ron Carter! And Frisell holding his own with giants but still sounding unmistakably himself is very impressive! McCoy's chops may be a little down here, (compared to 10 or 20 yrs. ago) but it's still a definitively great performance on his part.

You can start with his former trio with Kermit Driscoll and Joey Barron. there is a live album of that band.

I used to dislike Bill's playing when I just get into jazz. I understand it is easily refused at a first glance. IMO it is mainly because of his minimalistic style. More and more I listen to music throughout time, I am getting sensed, realized, surprised on what he is really doing. He doesn't play many notes. but he always has a solid concept and doen't lose his own creativity.
It is your right to be indifferent about someone's playing. But if you try to listen sincerely, sometimes it brings you a true gold.
Frisell's wheelhouse is what I would call "americana" but he slips easily between more polarized genres like jazz, folk, avante-garde, psychedelic He is an innovator on his instrument and his playing is simply gorgeous .... In this str8 jazz setting he listens and then plays right on point ....
Why do some TH-cam viewers always go out of their way to be negative, churlish and impugn the worth of musicians seeking to make their contribution? Is it ego, or just resentment at the achievement of others. All this set are good at what they bring to the ensemble. It is polite to acknowledge this truth. Why accentuate the negative when good manners should say the opposite. To dismiss Bill Frisell with a childish aside with 'he's no jazz player'. This musician has a distinguished background in music for arranging, composing and playing jazz. He is acknowledged by no less a guitarist as Pat Metheny and many others. So the boorish assertion ' he's no jazz player' is both childish and not borne out by his peers and background. I wonder if this critic could hol d his own on guitar with Bill Frisell. Almost certainly not. It's pique and ego which feeds this negative brick throwing invective on TH-cam, As Cicero once remarked in ancient Rome ' O Tempora, O' Mores.
Bill frisell had no business being up there with those guys.. sad... Just sad...
