Did you mention that "top of a sequence" is three cards in NT but only two cards otherwise?
After partner bid spades, isn't that enough reason to lead it (regardless of whether it's your joint longest suit)?
Not sure how you worked out to return a spade when partner led a diamond...spent a long time wondering what the 8D lead might be but West had overcalled spades so should have had 5+; South had 3, so should have expected North to have more than 3....but spades was the only suit that might not have lost the lead.

It's often good to lead up to weakness in dummy.

Terence Reese, in "Play of the Cards", lists four ways of winning tricks, which match pretty well with what you say:
1. Play a high card that nobody else can beat
2. Trump (ruff) someone else's trick
3. Establish a card using it's position, such as with a finesse or leading up to a king
4. Establish long cards.
And, as he says, the first two ways are easy :-)
