At Canadian Tire, they had those NCR 7052s with those CRTs, beeping keyboards, but had IBM Model 3 printers instead of NCR 7150 printers. They were looking for alternatives for NCR printers, and IBM printers worked well with NCRs. At the beginning of the 21st century, the 3s, and sometimes they had 4s, were replaced with 4610 Suremarks, keeping everything else intact. In 2005, the NCR 7052s were replaced by Fujitsu terminals keeping the 4610 Suremarks. Those thermal printers could connect to almost anything!
This is so nostalgic, especially the sounds of the checkout stand. I was immediately transported back to my childhood. I was cleaning out my basement recently and came across a JCP bag, just like the ones shown in this video!
Ahh this is so nice, my mom used to take me back to school shopping at Penny's, Kohl's, places like that. This definitely makes me feel like we are back there 😢 Thank you for the videos! I absolutely loved watching the cashier's scan everything and loved the sounds the old cash registers make!
What amazes me most is the cameraperson's confidence to point the camera at people's faces to blatantly. They seem less concerned then than they would be nowadays too.
I bet those people didn't think they would end up on the internet 25 years later. TH-cam was obviously not a thing back then lol. No social media so people didn't care that they were being filmed. Probably thought it was strange though.
Funny you should mention that. Back in 2003, I went into a JCPenney in Florida, and it still looked the same as it did in this video. Even the NCR 7052s were still in use with their original 7150 printers until a few years later. In the UK, virtually every department store chain except for the JLP and HOF used those exact terminals, as did the catalogue store giant Argos. Most except Littlewoods and Allders (who went bust in 2005) phased them out by the 00s in favour of newer NCR models with thermal printers.
@@AurumUsagiThey had NCR 7052s like those in Canadian Tire, but with IBM Model 3 printers. It was quite an arrangement of noises, the beeps of the keyboard and the unforgettable Model 3/4 printing noise together.
@@liamwatson5125 That's a very unusual combination for an NCR. Most I've seen were always paired with NCR 7150 printers. Then again, I've seen Fujitsu ICL TeamPOS 5000s with Epson TM-U950s and Axiohm (NCR) thermal printers instead of the usual Fujitsu ICL FD21 dot matrix, so some stores do mix EPOS equipment.
There’s something to be said for how we used to shop. Honestly, all the technology & online shopping is more stressful to me. I need the app & I need to use the digital download coupon🙄It was just more simple back then & you had good choices to choose from. Lots of stores & lots of options.
Aww the catalog 😢 not to be that person but it seems like there was more structure, control and neatness in stores back then!! JcPennys and stores in general aren’t this stocked anymore.
Our JCP is still around in which I visited as a child in the late 90s. We still visit at times & I tell you when you first walk in!!!!! That nostalgic smell that comes at you when you first enter those doors…. It definitely takes you back!!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just love JCPenney's way of showing the prices if an item is on sale or clearance. It's very helpful and they've got an amazing jewelry collection. So I am sad to see it go.
I specifically remember that catalogue. It was a catalogue that had the best toys of 1997 and damn if I wasn’t going to try my best and get a N64 that Christmas.
I was probably 14 or 15 at the time. At first, I thought this video had got to be from the early 90s in the beginning because the old ladies with the big frame glasses reminded me of late 80 early 90s. This can't be 1997! But then, I saw the kids. One of the boys was wearing an oversized t-shirt and a baseball cap. It reminded me of something my brother would wear at the time. Then I saw a girl with a mini backpack purse. I was like, "Oh yeah, this is definitely 1997!".
I worked at the mens department at Sears back in '96. Think they only required a sport coat and tie at the time. We weren't as fancy as you Penny's guys. 😁
What a time. I feel bad for the younger generation. We knocked on windows to tell our friends to come outside. Was outside most of the day. When you left your house and no one could bother you, bc most likely you didn't have a cell phone. You could relax because you didn't have a smartphone to look at every 2 minutes.
1997, age 25. JCPenney became one of my favorite stores and I still shop at the one at the Cherry Hill Mall. In 1997, I shopped at their Burlington Center location. This closed over 5 years ago. The mall closed shortly after and is now warehouses with store cubes in front.
My mom worked in the jcpenney hair salon in 98-2000's I would go to work with my mom and walking a round mall mom would sometimes give me money to buy something or food. I had so much fun!
The NCR 7052s were still in use until around the mid 00s. Thanks to being based on IBM compatible/Wintel technology, they had such longevity until they were eventually obsoleted, especially due to changes in the way we use cards for payments thanks to C&P and now contactless as well. No longer did one had to authenticate and get customers to sign dockets that got fed through the franking part of those dot matrix/impact printers. The technology and fashions may have changed, but most JCPenneys I've been to since 2003 still looked the same as this one.
I still think this older technology was faster than what we have today. I know everyone thinks touchscreens and fancy GUIs are the latest and greatest, but the older, keyboard focused interfaces seemed to be much faster, if the cashier knew what they were doing. And don’t even get me started on iPads being used for cash registers. The screens are way too small.
@@thatjpwing I've seen so many of those touchscreen EPOS tablets. They certainly don't have the same feeling as an actual terminal. Even NCR seems to have lost their distinctive bleep with those tablets.

The old cash registers hit the jackpot for me. Such nostalgia! I could watch those all day long

I loved the malls. It was a great place to get out of the hot weather and meet people from all over the country and sometimes the world.
People look more relaxed and taking their time shopping.
If it weren’t for the older computers, I would’ve sworn this was filmed 10-15 years ago lol
