I saw Jimi for 3 days performing in Hamburg's "Star Club". Unbelievable what he did with his guitar electrically shortcutting it, biting in its strings and holding and playing it on his back, nearly letting explode our ear-drums. And for the small drummer, it was quite frightening to see the tips of his drumsticks often breaking off and like small meteorites flashing into the dancing crowd. I survived the 60s, being now 73. Sadly it is always the heroes, who die first.
Must have been awesome to have seen the Master while he still walked this Earth. For the rest of us, we have to be happy with these recordings of a distant past.

A true master musician, thats an understatement.. he spoke of something else, something all of us can feel but cant tell what it is...
This is Winterland! He did three show Oct. 10, 11, 12, 1968. And it is incredible, isn't it? I was there the first night. (The picture is from somewhere else.)
Apart from being in the top 3 performances that Jimi ever did with this song - I keep coming back over and over again just to listen to him talk at the end. Just listening to his voice gives me goosebumps.
4:04 Man, it's unbelievable that in the 60s, the era of Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, Tom Jones, Etta James, Bob Dylan, etc., there existed a kind of guitar playing like this.

Just 4 years. 4 f@#!ing years. Still, here we are, 50 years later, still being awestruck be his performances. Who can imagine what more he could give us if his life was not so short. A legend who slept with his arms around his guitar.
His tone at these Winterland shows has to be one of his best, absolutely massive, loud and authoritative. It was a religious experience listening to the recent Winterland release at near FULL volume on a nice large stereo, felt like being there!
Being at Winterland was an incredible experience and one that still gives me music inspiration after all these years. I was not happy when Graham shut it down.
Glitch Band - The most underrated part of Jimi. Everybody talks about the playing. For me it's the tone. I don't know if there's ever been a better tone than The Band O' Gypsy's Machine Gun performance.
This Winterland stuff is great. That picture though is from Detroit's Masonic Temple in February of 1968. I was at that show where the Soft Machine, The MC5 and the Thyme opened.

At 6:38 Jimi thanks the dEaD's chemist Owsley-- Probably for the hits of...aCiD!!! hahaha
Jimi only played 4 times in Michigan. Seen the Experience 2 times--Masonic and then Cobo Hall. He first played Ann Arbor, and last at the Flint IMA Auditorium.
He actually played Michigan 5 times. He did 2 Cobo shows. One in Novemeber of 68 and the other in May of 69. I attended both off them. The bootleg audio of the 68 Cobo show came from my original cassette which I recorded from the third row.

Jimi`s best version of Hey Joe is also Winterland `68 with that epic fret tapping intro and drumsolo at the end
