    I have found that not starting different varieties in the same trays is a good practice. Seeds sprout at different rates, even within colors of the same variety of flowers. Then they can be promptly pulled from the heat mat after sprouting.

    A humidity dome or plastic wrap over the tray will help hold the moisture in on the mini blocks and aid in higher germination rates. Many small seeds will stop and fail if moisture dries out for a few hours. A heat mat can help too especially on low germ rates or older seed. Doesn't always help. Great video! Keep it up! :)

      I have some old humidity domes that I need to find to help with the drying out but I had not thought about using plastic wrap- very clever! Thank you for your advice and kind words :)

      Definitely use plastic wrap or a humidity dome to retain moisture until you have 80% germination. I'm using a lot more soil blocks to save on space. Happy Gardening!

    I was able to find the fine vermiculite at Lowe's. It's really made a difference on the mini-blocks. I've been putting the minis in old blueberry containers so I can keep the lid over them as a humidity dome. Bonus - they fit on my window sill (I don't have a proper greenhouse) so the soil stays warm and I can keep a closer eye on them while they are sprouting.

      That's a great idea! I used to recycle fruit containers to start seeds in all the time- it's just like a mini greenhouse. I'll have to check out my local Lowes to see if they have any vermiculite. Happy gardening :)

    I just received my Fiskars soil blocker today. It's plastic so was only $20 (and did have good reviews). I wanted to try it out first and if I like it invest in the metal ones. I used those biodegradable pots for things like sunflowers before but they dry out SO fast.

      looking for a "spatula" and right moisture content when you go to plant. still need to try to up (pot/block) from the small blocks to larger blocks, and need to find the dibbler inserts for soil block press.

      they've been doing it in Europe for 100+ years. Sometimes "new/different" isn't better. Look at how we've killed the soil with petro/chemical fertalizers & weed sprays....

    Hello I’m 7b also but I’m in Washington State. Can you make a pinned comment of when you start your seeds indoor please? It would be extremely helpful others in our zone.
    I see you have Hollyhock and Rubeckia and have some others already going from seed. I have the Cool Flowers book and am aware of planting out early for certain varieties, but I wasn’t aware that it was time to start some of those seeds you currently already have going. Thank you for your knowledge.

    not to be a perv...but good lord, looking good in them jeans..also I would wait till you have roots poking out of the mini soil blocks to transplant...and I'm not sure of the humidy in your green house but if your having any algey issues on the blocks try watering a few hours after light instead of at night....cool channel keep the videos coming...subbed

    Why not multi sow onions, super easy to separate and saves a lot of time. I put like 100-200 in like half a tray

    Nice video, can you detail more about the type of compost that is best for soil blocking?

    • @fewacrefarm
      @fewacrefarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my own compost from horse manure and table scraps. I am not familiar with most store bought brands of liquid fertilizer but I do use fish emulsion for an alternative and I love everything about it (except the smell)! It's pretty mild and won't roast your plants if you overmix unlike most chemical fertilizers.

    What soil mix did you use for making the soil blocks? Thanks for the video!

    • @fewacrefarm
      @fewacrefarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I just picked up some Miracle Grow seed starting mix for the mini blocks. For the 2" soil blocks I mixed some old potting mix I had with homemade compost and perlite. I like Coast of Maine and Fox Farms potting mix that I've used previously if you're looking for organic options. When I run out of my current mix, I will probably get either of those. Good luck to you!
