    Nice one Nigel, my broad beans have been hit hard with the weather this winter so probably won't be over wintering again, but starting them off in the polytunnel to beat the black fly. Take care my friend's.

    • @MuddyBootz

      Hi Janet, the mycorrhizal fungi is used to promote extra root growth (hyphae) which will allow the plant to take up more nutrients. It does not work on brassicas because the plant does not allow it to colonise the roots👍

    Wonderful to har what you are up to. However I do have a question! I am deeply curious as to why some people 'bore holes' and fill with sand etc when planting carrots or parsnips. I also remember, and see other gardeners, simply setting carrot seed in a drill, and thinking out. So my question is, why make a special hole to plant a single carrot seed in to?? Love the vlog by the way!

    • @MuddyBootz
      @MuddyBootz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Gordon, carrots and parsnips are very similar in as much they dislike any disturbance to the tap root as it is growing (eg hitting stones). By boring holes and filling with sifted compost, this greatly reduces the chances of any obstruction and quite often results in a long and straight carrot/parsnip 😀

    Nice to see a Muddy Boots! Our seed mix mostly comes treated with mycorrhiza so I don’t really have a choice. I wouldn’t bother otherwise particularly since I use seed treated with fungicide to prevent damping off! I think my lovely compost rich soil will have plenty of micro flora and fauna once the plants go out in the garden.

      @@andrewjardine3820 Been using clover for a long time and it was never the same each time you used it so I would rather pay a little more and get consistency, still has lumps when sived, but I add that to the beds as a mulch.

      Hello Andrew...is that Humax compost?.....I have used quite a few brands including Humax which was fine. As Terry mentions below, quality can vary with manufactures from season to season. Clover in particular does not seem to be consistent. Best compost that I am currently using is Bathgates Champions Blend - particularly the peat free version, but this is becoming difficult to locate stocks for some reason. 👍

    Hi just to say that I have never made any additions to soil at planting or transplanting in my 50 years of growing, I couldn't see the need to be honest. If things grow right why bother in my opinion. On another note we had -- 4, last night here in Sussex and it flattened my early spuds and beetroot even though these are under poly tunnels, the water in the hydroponics also froze and the pump ran dry, the strawberries look to have come through OK though, these were covered too under heavy fleece. But hey that's the weather for you. Cheers Carl

      Hi mate, I do add manure and lime to adjust pH levels as I have seen the difference this makes depending on the crop. Temperatures here are still hovering around zero at night and a sleet shower today don't look as if it is getting any warmer soon. Not sure if you seen my previous video but the celery in the fridge certainly germinated and grew much quicker than my standard method of sowing. Cheers pal 👍

      @@MuddyBootz Hi again, I'm glad the celery started well for you. I should have said that I do amend the raised beds every year, last November I put 3" of mushroom compost on most and some with used bought compost on others, that I grow carrots and parsnips in. This years weather is playing havoc down here the beds look like deserts we have only had 2 short lots of drizzle in 9 weeks and these frosts over the last couple of weeks have prevented me planting greenhouse grown veg out, I'v no room left to start or move things around, I have 2 trusses on the tom's and cucumbers and gherkin's on the plants but no chance of putting them in the greenhouse borders due to lack of space. That's nature for you, regards Carl

      Hi Sarah, not sure where you are located but I would try placing the seed pots or tray inside a zip lock bag and see how they perform 👍

    I’ve put my potatoes in tubs and I’m wondering how often do I water them and how much does each tub need they are the 30ltr size?

    • @MuddyBootz
      @MuddyBootz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Sandra, it will be weather dependant, but as an average I water mine about twice per week......around 5ltr per tub each time.. also do not fill to the top with compost, so that the water does not spill out 😀
