Why Carcassonne Has Left My Collection - Board Game Cull

- Carcassonne is still one of those great tile laying gateway games out there, however I encounter the same perpetual issue every time I try to show it to new players, it's bloated as can be and another game has replaced it now.
What are these things I speak of? Check out the video for more details!

I prefer the looks of this first edition. I also don't play it much these days, but it doesn't take up too much space, so I don't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon.
The space is why it lasted as long as it did.
That just simply could not be true. The original artwork is abysmal, most of the time it didn’t even connect which is fundamental to the game.
I respect your decision to cull games. However, I can't get rid of this one as my undergraduate research project was mapping the geology around carccy because dinosaur bones were found in vineyards just south (limoux)! An incredible area and I can't wait to visit again.
Nice! Now I want a wine! :P
Carc Castle is where it’s at! Two player only and the score track with reward around it is excellent! It’s a shame it’s so hard to get...I hope they reprint it one day.
Doubt they will reprint any of the obscure but good ones.
Carcassonne is something I don't really play anymore these days. I'm not the most social gamer, so gateway stuff as such doesn't have as much appeal. But my partner enjoys it and I certainly don't mind owning it. I own dozens of games, not hundreds. So far haven't had to cull anything because of space.
If I seriously had to get rid of... let's say +5 games, Carcassonne might be on the list.
It was great fun when I first started building up my collection. Years have gone by, tastes and preferences have evolved. Can't say I long for it these days. It provided plenty of good gaming back when.
I haven't pulled out my copy of Carc in years. It's so bloated with expansions, I'm intimidated to even open the box and sort through it. However, it was my introduction into the hobby 17 years ago, and I can't part with it.
That's understandable! I got a few like that!
The game really doesn't drag on especially with the house rule of drawing at the end of your turn. If it drags on it is a player issue. If you NEED to shorten the game ... pull some tiles out.
Waiting for 3-4 other people to think about their turn even with the house rule still takes a while.
@@TheBrokenMeeple it shouldn't. Usually people have their move in mind while in between turns. Sometimes you have to adjust your plan if something changes. It might be that you were playing with some paralysis analysis types. I know the pain of that. I played a six player game of King of New York and three of the players were NOTORIOUS paralysis analysis types. It should not take 3 and a half hours to play that game!!! If you are playing with such people then it is necessary to introduce a timer chess style give bonus points for not taking forever
I considered getting the new 20th anniversary but honestly will probably just play the digital version. Much easier to keep track of various expansions, and I don't think your missing out on anything really from the physical version. Would you agree Luke?
Agreed, Small Islands has replaced this for me in my collection.
I just got Carcassonne South Seas from a charity shop enjoy it a lot
My preferred one.
This feels pretty nostalgic as I go back to the days of "the starting tile" segment on throat punch lunch on the dice tower... But totally agree on the cull, is a game with too much AP even for newcomers, I played a game of this with 2 players and with 5-6 expansions and it was something like 5 hours, I pretty prefer a whatever Lacerda session in those hours instead.
WOW! 5 Hours?! And yeah, in the days when I could find the time to do additional DT segments. Shame I don't live in the US and can't just jump into the DT gang!
Yeah I love the culling videos.
I have gone full circle in the hobby, in early days I would open a new box with eagerness and a smile on my face. Nowadays I get that same smile when I look at a freshly emptied space on my kallax, a space full of opportunity.
I'm struggling to find room even when culling as fast as I can! :P
Discussing a single game risks being a bit limiting IMO unless it's really controversial but discussing other alternative similar or modern alternative games you prefer and why was really good.
I wonder if a games your currently considering getting rid and potential incoming games that may replace them or similar game head to heads with only one winner would be popular?
Maybe, though the culling video in general is already good as is, though like you say, with the "alternatives" part being a nice addition.
I thinknculling videos apeal to the attachment sense and that is why they are so popular now. Abd about me i also have yhe base game tucket with like 11 expansions in the base box it no longer goes out that much but i will get the 20th anniversary edition
Yeah culling videos and purchase videos and test of time videos seem to be the rage.
I can see why you got ride of this. I got rid of mine quite a whilse ago, because I noticed it was being skimmed over by people choosing games to play. It was always "oh, you've got Carcassonne" as the finger rode by it onto other things. I loved the way you caressed Small Islands lol
Yeah I would just pick other games and my cafe has it.
can you suggest better options that fill the following bullets...
1. puzzle-look tile placment
2. we all play together in the same area
3. has so much variety to its core that can replace all those expansion
4. option to extend depth/length with expansions
Doesn't quite tick (4), though not every game needs an expansion, but I think Small Islands is worth a look to tick the other 3. That I still have in my collection over Carcassonne.
@@TheBrokenMeeple thanks for the fast answer. i did saw this after the video. i will check ita again since you still keep it. I am looking for a way to extend this kind of games. I suppose some expansions can extend the length. Im the type of person that even if play a gateway game i want to extend the expirience. i play few times each week and i can only setup one game in every session. sometimes the party can take the lenght but still need gateway experience
I have played it many times in solo mode which is an interesting challenge.
Solo??
@@TheBrokenMeeple Some people have been adding different solo rules for Carcassonne at the BGG. They are filed under Forums/variants. Apart form that I'd like to say that your channel is very interesting. I got Dale of Merchants and Valley of the Kings thanks to your recommendation. Greetings from Chile :)

Let me explain why you're wrong.
*Drags on higher player counts:* Not possible because the total number of turns is always the same.
*Game X replaced Carcassonne:* No other tile laying game has the same amount of player interaction as Carcassonne.
*Boring Art:* Buy a newer edition.
*Mediocre Gateway Game:* No, it's actually a good game otherwise too. I love *fighting* for points in Carcassonne. The forward planning with farmers is interesting. Stealing or sharing enemy structures is fun. Defending your structures is tense.
Total number of turns isn't the problem, its the added downtime due to multiple thinking players.
Small Islands does I kid you not.
Buy South Seas you mean, the normal French countryside isn't that exciting.
It does fine and I can still enjoy it but I've just found some better gateway games now and I don't have to constantly deal with players not understanding farmers.
No problem there. I'm sure you have had many, many plays of that. Sometime it's just time to move on. Oh...If you want to dump that Infinity box behind you.... let me know. 😁
Ha ha errr no! :P
Personally wouldn't mind longer vids with multiple culled games. Just because tiktok is popular doesn't mean there isn't a place for longer paced videos as well.
Definitely agree with those points!!!
I did a collection version before, but then people don't know what they are getting - whichever route you go it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't" :P Also as much as I hate everything to do with Tik Tok and the whole "let's make our videos stupidly short" craze, 9 min wasn't too bad! :P
@@TheBrokenMeeple Having sat through, and enjoyed, 2+ hour Oxford debate videos on TH-cam the whole push for shorter "head line" content just rubs me the wrong way.
But you do you mate, I'll keep on watching.
I will get rid of carcassonne if owned the first version. But luckily I don't, I own the new version and I think that it is beautiful. I even go the extra miles to import the 20th anniversary edition as I can't find it in my country. Carcassonne is always one of the best game in my list
That's cool, it's just kind of burned out for me.
Problem with game review videos is that game reviewers get the games half a year or more in advance. I am not watching video of the game that I can't find in a shop. When people make culling videos if the game is not very obscure or from the previous century, most likely you can find it in the shop :)
Interesting thought. Makes sense.
I never understood what's so difficult about the farmers either.
Ditto! It boggles my mind!
Have You seen 20th Anniversary Edition Carcassonne yet? Just been made available for preorder at Zatu! 😊
Yep and I think it's kind of jumping the shark now as we have had so many revisions of this!
@@TheBrokenMeeple yep! But at least they done something more memorable than people who control rights to Catan 😁 With so many expansions I must say: I adore this game. Started with Big Box and expanded on that. For my family - superb, easy to get in to and educational (especially for kids 6-13). For friends... Pure fun as long as you don't treat it too seriously 😂😜 Why am I preaching to the preacher? 😂 😂 😂
that intro is very 90s undertaker lol
I needed something fast but fitting! :P
gonna get rid of it plus 9 expansions (I own and haven't played most of them) and some small expansions as well.. haven't played it in years and am not in the mood to ever play it again (or to keep it for my 4-year-old son), cause I think there are so many better games out there, and I also own a lot of them.. ^^
and btw, just ordered small islands, thanks for that! ;)
Excellent, replacement or not its a solid game.
I need to get rid of my completionist attitude! I own a lot of games with too many expansions which (almost) never get played anyway. Carcassonne and Dominion being two of the biggest concerns in my collection right now.. going to get rid of both completely!
Need to try out Small Islands. Not on BGA though...
Yes it is - BGA has Small Islands on BETA - boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=smallislands
Oh you meant in real life preferably?
@@TheBrokenMeeple indeed. I dislike online gaming 😔
i just sold my copy as well. for the same reason. plus it was not my style of game
I'd still play it, but time passes.
R.I.P carcassonne
I'll still play it! :D
And then the 20th anniversary edition releases.
True but honestly it's just a cosmetic upgrade and even then, not a massive one.
So how does the farmers work? XD
Look at the green, follow it round! :P
Unacceptable!!! Blasphemy!!! Heretic!!! 😂 😂 😂
Said me to all those who praised Concordia! :P
@@TheBrokenMeeple 😂😂😂😂😂
Shame on you!
Needs must! :P
@@TheBrokenMeeple You are cruel! ;-)
I've just got rid of Ticket to Ride. Awful game, makes me feel a granny playing bingo... Greetings from Argentina!
Greetings...........BUT TTR?!
@@TheBrokenMeeple yes!! Heresy! Lol Hated it, made me feel playing bingo Lol way too overrated!!
@@FragRevel no way! :d
I played TTR Europe with so many different people.. and all of them seemed to really like the game
I can’t stand TTR… I don’t understand the appeal.
Heresy!
Replace it with Hunters & Gatherers.
Isn't that one that most people don't like?
@@TheBrokenMeeple No, it's great. It combines the best elements of the standard edition. The thing that I added myself are big meeples (count as 2) and followers (place them together with another meeple, but on a different part of the tile). And ofcourse drawing your tile at the end of your turn (duh). Cheers, Olaf
Why you cut Carcassonne? Easy because it sucks.
Harsh! I like ! :P
Carcassonne > Catan
+1 (several times over)
I still prefer Catan overall with some expansions.
I think they completely missed a great opportunity to do something special with the 20th Anniversary Edition, and instead they released something boring and uninteresting, much like the recent Catan Anniversary Edition.
If you are going to do a special edition, do something worthy of being called a special edition. New art, include the best expansions, include high quality components. Some publishers just don't get it, and just keep pushing out the same crap over and over again at retail.
Or just re-release The City.
because...its a boring game?
Waaaaa? :P
Cuz it’s boring af
