Did I Sink My New Pavati Boat On Purpose For YouTube Views?

  • Hopefully this video helps everyone better understand what actually caused my new boat to sink. After a thorough inspection of the boat at Pavati headquarters, we found that the cheap rubber flip tab plug came loose at some point during the day but upon further inspection we found that the main rear bilge pump hose was not connected properly which happened while I was installing new batteries in the boat a few days before our trip. This was a complete oversight on my part by not making sure the bilge hose clamp was properly tightened.

Growing up we had a boat that had the flip style plug. On two separate occasions it flipped up and came out. After the second time we went with the threaded style plug. It happens people get over it! Anyone who says you did this for views obviously doesn't watch your channel. Dave would never put his family in danger. I've had the same trouble with the same plugs as well, don't trust them anymore. It's not fun looking down and seeing water come up through the ski locker. Luckily we just put it up on plane after a bit of struggle with the extra weight and drained it back out, but getting it on the trailer wasn't fun as it started to fill again.

His error was acceptable. As a seafarer myself, I can totally see how the main bilge pump hose may have fallen off due to random maintenance carelessness - I would say that is by far the biggest problem and in face of that, the plug is relatively meaningless. My only problem with Dave is that he ignored the bilge pump warnings. On old boats you can occasionally ignore warnings if they are a constant problem and its clearly faulty wiring (should fix though). But on this brand new modern boat, you have to look at these things immediately because they are generally not wrong.
Verdict: critical captain error --> not on purpose

1- glad your family is ok and you guys were able to recover the boat, family is most important.
2- sounds like your plans are to repair the boat and get it back in the water. Would it be possible to get maybe a couple videos on that? Definitely be interesting to see what they’re gonna do to the hull and just all the waterlogged electronics etc
3- as an avid watersports enthusiast myself, I’d love to see some more videos with you guys and the crew over at Pavati. Those boats are other worldly and out of reach for most of us weekend surfers. I’d love to see more of the build process of the aluminum boats and all the detail they put into these things.

Then the purpose of this video has worked. Pavati got their name out there. Explain why he is saying the drain plug fell out but in the recovery video AWP channel, you can see the drain plug still there. He said he was using the boat for surfing when it sank, why is the steering wheel cover on the boat. He is benefiting from these videos, AWP is benefiting from these videos. Pavati is benefiting. As I watched your boat recovery video and listened to your story, I couldn't help but feel your pain and the anxiety that you must have gone through during that moment. I myself went through a similar yet much worse catastrophe. when I was 18 my father and older brother took a camping trip to lake Powell and were caught in a sudden windstorm March 31st 1983 a very long time ago. The outcome however had no silver lining. My father and older brother, nor the mother of the family that was with us made it. I love your videos and the work that you do. Anyone that thinks you of all people would do this for clicks is a complete ass. I admire your ambition and your content.
My father and my older brother were both working on their pilots licenses when the accident occurred. As a result, I had a compelling urge to get my pilots license and finish what they had both started. Ive been a privet pilot now for about 16 years.

A funny story: my buddy was running a blown alcohol hydro (with strait zoomie exhaust) at a place called Rettinger Lake in California. It's remote and more like what Dave was in where he sank. The Sheriff patrol was doing a pass through the lake and heard the boat do a full power run in the canyon while launching their boat. We were watching them start to get in a hurry to go catch them and in all the fun and excitement they forgot the (you guessed it) plug. They were in the water and must have noticed water getting in the boat because one of the deputies jumped in the water doing something at the back of the boat. He got back in the boat, and they returned to the dock loaded and left. We figured they dropped, lost, or forgot their only plug. The whole time the drag boat was making noise. We were cracking up.

#2 used a glorified wine bottle cork instead of a proper bung
#3 dismissed the bilge pump alarm
#4 dismissed the lack of water coming out of the bilge pump outlet
#5 opened the ballast tanks that were full of air and were likely the only thing keeping you afloat.
Any one of these things alone would not have resulted in a sunk boat. I don't think you did it on purpose and I would put my last dollar down betting that you will never make these mistakes again. You forgot #6 adding 1000lb of lead. NEMA regs call for enough floatation for a boat to be neutral buoyant when filled with water. Adding 1000lb lead is ultimately what dragged it to the bottom. I’ve seen it so many times in wake/surf boats. The ones without lead stay just under the surface.

It really is incredible how he somehow "accidentally" did all of the right things to sink his boat.
Bilge Pump Alarm + No water pumping overboard = hey, maybe its a bad bilge pump??
You need to see a dry bilge, which only takes a second to open a single hatch, to disregard a bilge pump alarm.
But he has the "your boat is sinking!" alarm blaring in his face ( trust me, its annoying AF), sees that he isn't pumping overboard, doesn't bother looking below deck and just "hey, lets just flood the boats tanks without checking literally anything.🤷‍♂️"

Rule [the bilge pump mfgr.] has made modular float switches that attach directly to the pump that activate before water is over the top of the pump. I have had them on every boat I've had since the 1990's.

I’ve seen people lose their plug in the lake before here in Folsom CA. It’s not like unheard of. I’ve seen personally a few boats basically sinking in progress. I highly doubt Dave sank his boat for views. If you’ve ever owned a boat you know how particular people are about keeping it clean and keeping shoes off the seats lol. I doubt Dave wanted his 400k boat at the bottom of a lake covered in silt and mud. Especially since the market for boats is nuts right now and it’s hard to even buy a boat right now with inventory and prices haha. Plus, TH-cam videos doesn’t pay that good enough to sink a half million dollar boat.

Things can happen fast. My old boat, it had a style plug that was literally just a plug with a handle. Well one time when I was driving my boat, I ran over my own anchor line, and the anchor line caught the handle of the plug and ripped it out. Didn't realize it til much later when I get off plane and water started coming in and I was like wtf!?! Thankfully I carry small plugs cause I was in the middle of nowhere with no help or cell signal.

Great video, man that accident could have been so much worse if not for being prepared. Dave, way to set a good example in figuring out not only what went wrong, but assigning blame, to yourself. That's not an easy thing to do, but it's what a man with high integrity does, but the truth is the truth, even if it puts a dent in our ego. So far as some channel trying to use your boating accident to their advantage to further their cause, laughable, simply laughable. Keep up the good work!

@@protecon they make some plugs that look like a duck bill. Only goes out when your moving and "pushing" water back through the flaps. My dad bought one in the 90s after having issues with a flip plug.

@@protecon one way valves with age have the tendency to block outgoing water and to leak incoming water. Personally never liked the flip type bung plugs either. One way to save a sinking boat is to pull the plugs and get the boat on a plain allowing the water to drain out fast.

In my experience when waters involved... when something goes wrong - it's almost always to late.... Especially when all the factors here are added ... like its a wake boat thats meant to take on TONNA water.... You just dont expect it and its to late and its jeesus take the wheel lol.
Only had one near death water experience, water kid growing up on the lake living on the water, tubing wake boarding u name it water water here in canada cause we dont get much time with warm water and tbh it aint even warm ffs so we utilize the mid june to early aug time as much as possible.
Had one near death experience on a nitro bass boat id say 10 years ago now was roughly 18~ at the time riding with my mother and a family friend whos olderf riend of the family who owned it.
You know when your trimmed up and the bass boat does the death walk racing the sea doo beside you (distracted woopin his ass) and u dont have hawk vision and seen the house boat cross the channel 2 mins ago waaay ahead, and all sudden the tiniest of wake tapering off gets under that 1ft if that ass end of the trimmed up nitro bass boat and you go from seeing 3 o clock, all the way around to 12 o clock sky box and your spine feels like it gets instantly compressed into your asshole or vice versa- and somehow come down, floating, but with motor trimmed WAY up, still barking its face off prop completelty out of the water meanwhile concussed. You learn to slow down/double check sht/think more and more . Turned me completely off water sports/boating. 3 times since ive been on a boat.
When water involved and emergency happens "getting up on plane is best way to releive water" is like those training courses u do for work 100 times in ur life and they think its best case scenario always lolll. Not even our nitro with 2 ppl would get up on plane without water in it without looking at ur watch like today...today....today.....oh here we go, ok start trim up lmao. Let alone water, this woulda been scary for dave and them i woulda sht my thong let alone thinked straight.
